Toponomastica

Roscommon, nome derivato dalla cittadina county town, è l'anglicizzazione del gaelico irlandese Ros Comáin, che significa "foresta di San Coman", santo che costruì un monastero nel luogo principale dell'attuale contea. Ros nel sud Irlanda significa foresta a dispetto che nel nord, dove invece significa penisola.

Araldica Civica

Basterebbe il triangolo verde con relativo contenuto ad identificare la contea di Roscommon, rappresentante la foresta indicata nell'antico nome gaelico con al centro una croce che simboleggia Saint Coman e le varie abbazie a lui connesse. La corona sottostante rappresenta Rathcroghan, posto dove il mito vuole siano stati seppelliti gran parte dei re Hereman. La testa di ariete ha un significato meno antico e mitico, evidenziando una delle principali attività economiche del Roscommon, l'allevamento ovino. Il ramo di quercia infine identifica il primo presidente d'Irlanda, Dr. Douglas Hyde, natìo del Roscommon.

Il motto della contea, in latino, è inserito spesso in un nastro sottostante, "Constans Hiberniae Cor", per rafforzare il simbolismo degli elementi dello stemma e rimarcare la posizione geografica della contea.
