Façade est du Baphuon Temple-montagne shivaïte de 3 étages datant du milieu du XIè siècle construit en grès sous le règne de Udayâdityavarman II Au XVIè siècle, le temple a servi de carrière pour ériger un grand Bouddha couché sur la façade ouest. L'EFEO a commencé la restauration de ce temple en 1960 et l'a achevée en 2011, avec une interruption entre 1970 et 1992 en raison de la guerre. Les difficultés rencontrées ont été innombrables : effondrements, invasion par la végétation, destructions des archives du chantier par les khmers rouges, instabilité du soubassement, déformations des murs et infiltrations d'eau, modifications au cours du temps, Le renforcement des soubassements a du être effectué au moyen de voiles de béton armé placés à l'arrière des maçonneries et invisibles à l'oeil.
