Summary

Description

It would be going too far, I think, to describe Lacock Abbey, in Wiltshire, as the birthplace of photography -- though plenty of people do. But it is certainly true that the Abbey was the place where William Fox Talbot, in the 1830s, did a great deal of experimentation in the art and science of creating photographs. A museum of photography, celebrating his achievements, stands just outside the Abbey gates.

One of Fox Talbot's most famous early images was of the oriel window which stands immediately below and between the first two sets of chimneys, reading the image from left to right.

In recent years, the village of Lacock, and the Abbey, have been used as the location for numerous films, perhaps the most famous being the Harry Potter series.

Flickr already offers over a thousand images of Lacock Abbey, so why provide another one? Well, because there's always someone seeing it for the first time.

The original Abbey was first built in the 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, as a nunnery of the Augustinian variety. It became a private house after the dissolution of the monasteries (1540s), and has naturally been much altered since, notably by the architect Sanderson Miller in the 1750s. Currently owned by the National Trust.
