Notes Like a comic strip, this painting tells a story in several pictures, but unlike comic strips it uses a single frame. On the left handside, Lucrece confesses her rape by Tarquin to her father, husband and other noble Romans, among whom Brutus. On the right handside, she lies on the ground with the knife she stabbed herself to death with and on this macabre altar is the Roman republic founded.
