Exhibition history
Notes In 1563, Joachim II declared his Lutheran profession of faith, but the rosary in this portrait suggests he is not a Protestant. In 1569, following negotiations with his brother-in-law, the Polish King Sigismund II Augustus, Joachim was co-enfoeffed with the Duchy of Prussia. The striking fur hat worn by Joachim has been interpreted by some researchers as a Polish item of apparel possibly intended to manifest his close connection with the Polish throne.
