Description
English: U.S. Navy catapult launching officers Lt.Cdr. Tony Boex and Lt. Tom Mossey signal an Grumman EA-6B Prowler (BuNo 163404) of Electronic Attack Squadron 136 (VAQ-136) "Gauntlets" for take-off from the aircraft carrier USS Independence (CV-62) on 13 March 1996. VAQ-136 was assigned to Carrier Air Wing 5 (CVW-5) abaord the Independence for a deployment to the South China Sea from 9 February to 27 March 1996.
On 10 March 1996, following China's intent to conduct live fire war games off the coast of Taiwan, U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher announced that the carrier was being moved closer to the Taiwan Straits. Independence was at that time homeported in Yokosuka, Japan.
