Other information
English: On his return from South Africa, Gandhiji founded the Satyagraha Ashram in Ahmedabad, first

at Kocharab, on 25th of May, 1915. It was later shifted to Sabarmati on 17th of June, 1917.

Ashram became the center for freedom struggle of India and a hub of constructive activities promoting non-violent society. Countrywide political, educational and national programmes for emancipation of India were conceived and sponsored from here. Ashramites were wedded to spiritual life based on lofty ideals of community living in search of Truth and Non-Violence.

Ashram is better known among people for the historical Salt March started from here. Gandhiji left the Ashram on 12th March, 1930 for this march on foot to a village called 'Dandi' with 78 companions to protest against the tax levied on salt, with a solemn vow not to return to the

Ashram till he achieved freedom for India.
