From George Cruikshank's illustrations to Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy. Plate III: The Jack-boots transformed into Mortars

From left to right, Trim, Uncle Toby, and Tristram's father. Trim has turned a pair of old jackboots into mortars (more exactly, "mortarboards" while doing repairs around the house. Unfortunately, though Trim was assured they were no longer in use by Obadiah, they were Tristram's great-great-grandfather's.
