Here the natives of Oahu made theirfinal stand and fought desperately, resisting with clubsand spears the savage hordes led by Kamehameha. The six inhabitedislands of the group are Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai,Maui, and Hawaii, the last containing the largest activevolcano of which we have any knowledge; namely, thatof Kilauea, to visit which persons cross the Atlanticand Pacific oceans, and also the American continent,between the two. Honolulu was chosen for the capitalbecause it forms the best and almost the only harborworthy of the name to be found among these islands.
