Summary

Description

A U.S. Navy McDonnell F2H-2N Banshee night fighter from Composite Squadron VC-4 Nightcappers aboard the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB-42). A detachment of VC-4 made a single deployment aboard the FDR with Carrier Air Group 6 (CVG-6) to the Mediterranean Sea from 10 January to 18 May 1951. Note the Sikorsky HO3S plane guard helicopter from Helicopter Utility Squadron HU-1 Fleet Angels in the background.

The F2H-2N differed from the standard F2H-2 by having an 84 cm longer nose section housing an AN/APS-19 radar set. Only 14 F2H-2Ns were built, one (BuNo 123311) was later modified to serve as an aerodynamic prototype for the F2H-3 all-weather fighter version.
