"Elios & the sheep"; Comité des Étudiants Américains de l'École des Beaux-Arts Paris post card numbered 24800; an untitled work, no caption, signed J. Souverbie; undated. WWI postcard art. A pastoral scene of a classically-dressed (Greek?) shepherd-boy in a blue robe, with his staff and one sheep, in an outdoor setting. Done in a "romantic" and "impressionistic" style, the image is soft, resembling pastels. The rectangular painted area is framed with a gold line, then the natural white artist's-cardstock around the periphery. Miniature painting in oils(?); painted on a standard Comité des Étudiants Américains de l'École des Beaux-Arts Paris postcard blank, printed on the reverse with: 'The Comité des Étudiants Américains de l'École des Beaux-Arts Paris guarantee the authenticity of this post card'. Artist's signature on the front, lower left corner of the painting; "J.Souverbie.". Back with only the handwritten number 28400(?) added to the standard printed design & text, at bottom-centre. The numbering is a little unclear; the initial digit resembles a "9", however both numeral-style & context (i.e.: what is know of the numbering-system of these postcards) strongly suggest that the digit is actually a stylised "2" (cards in the 9xxxxx range being otherwise unknown, as are any cards numbering higher than the 3xxxx range). The first "0" appears to have originally been written as a "1", & then corrected in the same hand & ink. Created by the French artist Jean Souverbie (1891-1981); a fairly early work, originally untitled. Date of creation unknown (beyond the known operating timeframe of the organisation; 1916 to 1918 or early 1919); the card-number (vaguely) suggests a date ~1917. Created during WWI, therefore obviously pre-1923; uploaded here to avoid Commons' "dual jurisdiction" PD rule.
