Summary

Description

English: Ding-dong door chime.

It is composed of, as anotated in the image:

  • Middle: solenoid
  • below: armature with clappers
  • left and right: chime rods

Function:

  1. Without current applied the bell is as shown in the photograph. The clapper is hold by the spring with some distance to the lower chime rod.
  2. When you apply current, the solenoid lifts the armature and the upper clapper strikes against the upper (right) chime. As the solenoid is made to keep the armature just below the upper chime, the clapper falls back a tiny bit and keeps in this position as long as current is applied to the solenoid.
  3. When there is no more current, the armature falls down, the spring gets mechanical contact to its counterpart and decreases speed of the armature, but the armature still moves on and let the lower clapper strikes the lower (left) chime rod. Then the armature is lifted a tiny bit by the spring and returns to initial position.
The label reads "Grothe" (brand name/manufacturer) and, in German, "nicht ölen" (do not oil).
