In the horizontal body above the door, pilasters with fine grotesques divide a rectangular field into three areas that accommodate shields under arcs of three centers: the shield of the University of San Marcos of Peru on the left, in the center a shield representing the UPR, and to the right, the shield of Harvard University. The National University of San Marcos established in Lima, Peru in 1551, by "royal charter" of Carlos V King of Spain, is the oldest University of the Americas. Harvard, founded in 1636, is the oldest university in the United States. They represent the oldest universities in North and South America, of which the UPR aspired to inherit its centuries-old educational tradition.
Español: Escudos de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (izquierda), la Universidad de Puerto Rico (centro) y la Universidad de Harvard (derecha). En el Cuerpo horizontal sobre la puerta, pilastrillas con finos grutescos dividen un campo rectangular en tres áreas que acomodan escudos bajo arcos de tres centros: el escudo de la Universidad de San Marcos del Perú a la izquierda, en el centro un escudo que representa la UPR, y a la derecha, el escudo de la Universidad de Harvard. La Universidad Nacional de San Marcos establecida en Lima, Peru en 1551, por "decreto real" de Carlos V Rey de España, es la Universidad más antigua de las Américas. Harvard, fundada en 1636, es la universidad más antigua de EEUU. Representan las universidades más antiguas de Norte y Sur América, de las que la UPR aspiraba a heredar su centenaria tradición educativa. |
