Summary

Description
English: Front of postcard with photograph of carnival held in Portsmouth Square during Chinese New Year. The photograph was taken near sunset, as the glowing sky is still visible, but the foreground, showing Portsmouth Square, is in shadows. Lighted rides are visible in the foreground, including a carousel and Ferris wheel. One prominent background building facing Portsmouth Square is the China Trade Center, with distinctive round windows and the Empress of China rooftop restaurant. On the right side of the photograph, Washington Street recedes into the background, lined with neon signs and marked by moving cars, with taillights blurred by the long exposure.

The caption on the reverse reads "The romance of San Francisco's Chinatown is best portrayed during the festivity of the Chinese New Year. Fireworks and a special Oriental carnival spirit is in the air. This scene is a portrayal of this event as viewed from Portsmouth Square." The postcard includes information about the publisher (E.F. Clements, 85 Bluxome St., San Francisco, California 94107), printer (Color by Mike Roberts, Berkeley, California 94710), and stock number (C24215).

Dating this photograph: Because the China Trade Center is present, this photograph was taken no earlier than 1966. However, the carnival in Portsmouth Square was not held after the 1968 Chinese New Year festival. It is likely this photograph was taken from the old Hall of Justice, at some point between the time it was emptied (1965) and demolished (1968), so it is postulated this photograph was taken in 1967. That year, the Parade was held on February 25.
