| Description |
English: Chappe-system for optical conveyance of messages using special semaphore towers (see Semaphore line). The code illustrated is almost certainly fictitious. It first appeared in the Gentleman's Magazine, November 1794, p. 992. The author explicitly states that he does not know the actual code because the French kept it secret.
