Summary

Description A Canadair CL-84 Dynavert landing on the U.S. Navy amphibious assult ship USS Guam (LPH-9). the CL-84 was a V/STOL turbine tiltwing monoplane designed and manufactured by Canadair between 1964 and 1972. The shown first CL-84-1 (CX8401) was lost on 8 August 1973 when a catastrophic failure occurred in the left propeller gearbox in a maximum power climb. The U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps pilots aboard ejected safely. The entire propeller and supporting structure of the gearbox had broken away during the climb. It was rumoured that the pilots had attempted to set an unauthorized climb record to 10,000 ft (3,000 m) to take that distinction away from the McDonnell F-4 Phantom II that had held it.
