Summary

Description
English: This is one of the oldest stone temple dedicated to Shiva of Hindu tradition. Dated to the 5th century, the temple has a square plan for the sanctum, mandapa and overall complex. When discovered over 1917 - 1919, it was in ruins, the sanctum was covered with forest and there was mound in front. Excavation of the mound yielded broken pillars, temple parts and desecrated statues with their face and limbs chopped off. The sculpture and walls carvings are intricate. Many of its ruined parts and statues are now at major museums in India and elsewhere. The temple is the source of one of the oldest known Ganesha relief.

The temple sanctum has an ekamukha linga, much studied by scholars. Additionally, the temple includes Durga in her Mahishasura-mardini form, Surya, Ganesha, Kartikeya, Kama, and other Hindu gods and goddesses.
