Радници Жељезаре тада познате као Индустрија жељеза и челика — Зеница, два мјесеца прије радника Чикага штрајкали су и тражили повећање сатница, скраћење радног времена, један дан одмора у седмици и радну одјећу. Штрајк је прекинут у цјелости, чак и на плинским генераторима који су производили плин за металуршке пећи. Након вишедневних преговора, радницима су повећане сатнице за 10%, скраћено је радно вријеме за 2—3 сата дневно, и утврђено је да сви имају право на један дан одмора у седмици. Није удовољено тражењу радне одјеће.

Двије године касније су штрајком су протестовали рудари зеничког рудника. Њима је удовољено у свим захтјевима, осим износа повећања сатница.

У БиХ су сатнице биле најниже од свих земаља Аустроугарске.

Година 1906. је била у БиХ врло бурна. Проглашен је генерални штрајк. На Први мај је радништво Зенице зауставило рад и изашло на улице. Захтјева је било пуно. На раднике, којих је било заиста много, осим жандарма упућена је и војска, која је била стационирана у Зеници. У уторак првог маја 1906. године, убијен је први штрајкач у Зеници. Имао је име Перо Бутина и био поријеклом из Ливна, а радио у ваљаоници Жељезаре.

Током сљедећих дана, убијена су још три радника. Штрајк је угушен оружаном силом. Жељезара и рудник су тада из својих станова истјерали раднике — учеснике штрајка.

Ово су исјечци из књиге „Зеница и њена околина”. У исјечку, који се односи на првомајски штрајк 1906, аутор књиге Кемал Хреља говори о 12. мају. Тај датум се односи на извјештај Земаљске владе, који је послан у Беч, са описом догађања, како их је власт видјела.

Дата је и преслика из књиге умрлих Православне цркве РПсБ у Зеници, гдје се у заглављу види да је смрт наступила 1. маја, да је убијен и да је у књигу мртвих уписан 2. маја 1906. године.
