Eating the cats is a parody song by The Kiffness, a South African born musician.[1][2] The song is a response to President Donald Trump's claim, during the presidential debate on 9th September 2024, that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio were eating resident's pets.[3] The song pokes fun at the President's claims with a refrain "people of Springfield, don't eat my cat".[4]

Idea behind the song

edit

Referring to the reasons behind the song, The Kiffness states that "music has a way of taking away negative energy and polarising feelings, especially with someone like Donald Trump".[5] He said there is a "vested interest" in American politics because of its impact on his home country, South Africa.[citation needed]

Streams and earnings

edit

The song has been streamed and watched over 9 million times on youtube[6] and has been viewed more than 1 million times on X, formerly known as Twitter within 24 hours[7]. The musician pledges to donate all proceeds to the Clark County SPCA Springfield, Ohio[8] with over $20,000 raised already.

Lyrics and video

edit

The lyrics of the song begin with Trump saying "they are eating the dogs, they are eating the cats, they are eating the pets of the people that live there".[9] The singer then chimes in with the verse calling out "people of Springfield" and asking rhetorically, "why would you do that? "eat something else" he chants and offers different versions of food like bread, carrots and eggs in the video.[10] The singer has said the song is aimed at healthy eating.[citation needed]
