Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba season 1

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a Japanese anime television series based on Koyoharu Gotouge's manga series of the same name. An anime series adaptation produced by Ufotable was announced in Weekly Shōnen Jump on June 4, 2018. The first season, also known as Tanjiro Kamado, Unwavering Resolve Arc, adapts the first seven volumes (chapters 1–54) of the manga and aired from April 6 to September 28, 2019, on Tokyo MX, GTV, GYT, BS11, and other networks. Haruo Sotozaki directed the anime with scripts by the Ufotable staff. Yuki Kajiura and Go Shiina composed the music, and Akira Matsushima is the character designer. Hikaru Kondo is the producer.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is set in a world during Japan's Taishō era where humanity lives every night and has waged a war in centuries against demons who possess supernatural abilities such as enhanced strength, rapid regeneration, and unique powers referred to as "Blood Demon Arts". The story follows teenage Tanjiro Kamado, who strives to become a Demon Slayer after his family was slaughtered and his younger sister, Nezuko, is turned into a demon.

The opening theme is "Gurenge" (紅蓮華, "Red Lotus") by Lisa, while the ending theme is "from the edge" by FictionJunction feat. Lisa. The ending theme for episode 19 is "Kamado Tanjiro no Uta" (竈門炭治郎のうた, "Tanjiro Kamado's Song") by Go Shiina featuring Nami Nakagawa.

Aniplex of America licensed the series and streamed it on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Funimation. AnimeLab simulcasted the series in Australia and New Zealand. The first season ran for 26 episodes.

Prior to airing, the first five episodes screened theatrically in Japan for two weeks from March 29, 2019, under the title Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Sibling's Bond (鬼滅の刃 兄妹の絆, Kimetsu no Yaiba: Kyōdai no Kizuna). Aniplex of America screened the compilation film at the Aratani Theatre in Los Angeles on March 31, 2019. Madman Entertainment through AnimeLab screened the film in select theaters in Australia on April 2, 2019.

In July 2019, it was announced that the English dub would premiere on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block. It ran from October 13, 2019, to May 3, 2020.

Tanjiro and Nezuko make their way toward Mt. Sagiri when they encounter a demon residing in a nearby temple. They manage to successfully restrain it, but he finds himself hesitant to kill it, leaving it to burn in the sunlight. At this time, he meets Sakonji Urokodaki, who chastises him for his poor resolve and warns him about what will happen if Nezuko decides to kill a human. After letting Nezuko rest, Urokodaki puts Tanjiro through a test to prove his worthiness by climbing up and descending the hazardous and trap-infested Mt. Sagiri. Tanjiro succeeds in the task, and, after recalling the letter from Giyu requesting him to train Tanjiro to become a Demon Slayer, Urokodaki accepts him as his student.

Tanjiro trains to become a member of the Demon Slayer Corps, being told that he must pass Final Selection to be recognized as one. He undergoes 1 to 1.5 years of harsh and strict training on the mountain, including learning about the "Total Concentration" and "Water Breathing" techniques. With everything to know laid out, Urokodaki gives Tanjiro one final task to allow him to partake in Final Selection, to slice an immense boulder. After another six months of failing to make a dent, he starts to lose hope when he is suddenly attacked by a fellow swordsman, Sabito, who criticizes him for his weaknesses. Another swordsman, Makomo, helps to train Tanjiro more, revealing that they both are former students of Urokodaki. Six more months of training conclude with a final spar, where Tanjiro successfully strikes Sabito. As the two commend him for his success and vanish in a haze, it is revealed his slash had actually sliced the boulder in half.

Urokodaki is shocked by Tanjiro's achievement of slicing the boulder, congratulating him for completing what he learned during this 2 to 2.5 years, and telling him to come back alive from Final Selection. He arrives alongside a group of others like him who aspire to be Demon Slayers, and they learn they must survive for seven days amongst demons trapped in the mountains. During his battles he encounters the "Hand Demon", a giant grotesque demon who he learns specifically targets the "children" of Urokodaki, having killed all of them, including Sabito and Makomo. Despite the demon nearly overwhelming Tanjiro, while keeping its neck protected, he manages to overcome his defenses and successfully slices its neck with his Water Breathing.

The Hand Demon starts to fade away after being beheaded, and sensing a scent of sadness coming from the demon, Tanjiro prays for it to be reborn in a better life, also allowing the souls of Urokodaki's past students to be put to rest. Tanjiro survives the seven days of Final Selection and finds only three others have made it as well. One wrathful swordsman grabbed the girls hair and was scolded by Tanjiro after all. After receiving the ores needed to make their swords, Tanjiro returns to Mt. Sagiri where he reunites with Urokodaki and a reawakened Nezuko. A swordsmith named Haganezuka arrives shortly afterward to hand Tanjiro his sword, surprising everyone that it turns black. His Kasugai Crow soon appears to provide him with the details for his first mission, to investigate a town where young girls are being taken.

Tanjiro travels to the northwest village to investigate the case of the young girls who have been disappearing. There he meets Kazumi, whose fiancée is the latest victim, throwing him into despair. Tanjiro waits till night, when the demon makes its move against its next victim until he intervenes to rescue her. He discovers that the "Swamp Demon" not only possesses two other clones of himself but also can create puddles allowing them to appear from anywhere. Tanjiro struggles to protect Kazumi and the girl while also trying to throw killing blows at the demons, being overwhelmed until Nezuko intervenes, shocking the Swamp Demon that a demon is accompanying him.

While Nezuko protects Kazumi and the girl, Tanjiro faces off against the Swamp Demon and his clones. Tanjiro jumps into the swamp where two of the clones hide and manages to defeat them with his Whirlpool form. Nezuko faces off against the final clone until Tanjiro arrives and corners it. He asks the demon about Muzan Kibutsuji, the original demon and the one capable of turning people into demons, but he refuses to tell him anything, terrified by Muzan's previous threats. After killing the demon, Tanjiro consoles Kazumi over his lost fiancée, before making his way to his next mission in Tokyo's Asakusa. Soon after arriving, Tanjiro detects a scent that was present in his house the day his family was killed. He follows it to a man with his wife and daughter, who turns out to be Muzan himself in disguise. While being confronted, Muzan turns a passerby into a demon in the crowd to make his escape.

Muzan escapes as Tanjiro struggles with the demon, but not before hearing his vow to find him again. Muzan remembers a feared enemy from his past that had worn the same Hanafuda earrings he saw on Tanjiro, and tasks two demons, Susamaru and Yahaba, to track down and kill him. Meanwhile, Tanjiro is rescued by a demon named Tamayo, and a boy, Yushiro, revealing that she is a doctor with intentions of wanting to take down Muzan as well. Tanjiro and Nezuko are brought to Tamayo's place by the eccentric Yushiro, where through their discussion she reveals it could be possible to create a cure for becoming a demon, but she will need blood samples from demons Muzan has been in direct contact with to create it. Tanjiro resolves to accept this task when the four are suddenly attacked by a horde of temaris, controlled by Susamaru and Yahaba.

Susamaru uses her powerful temari to pummel the hidden house, revealing that she and Yahaba are members of the Twelve Kizuki, powerful demons that serve directly under Muzan. She decapitates Yushiro with one of her temari, and while he regenerates, Tanjiro struggles to dodge them, as they swerve in physically impossible directions and are difficult to slash. Yushiro helps him see the arrows that Yahaba is using to telekinetically control Susamaru's temari. Although Nezuko attacks Yahaba, the siblings are forced to change opponents, with Yushiro joining in to fight Susamaru using his Blood Demon Art to battle Susamaru. At first, Yahaba overpowers Tanjiro by altering his trajectory as he tries to get close, and Nezuko's leg is blown off by a temari. However, Tanjiro recalls his training and, despite his fatigue, unleashes a combination of forms to use the direction of Yahaba's arrows in his favor, closing the distance between him and beheading the demon.

The dying Yahaba attacks Tanjiro once more, using his arrows to throw his body around in a desperate attempt to kill him. Tanjiro uses consecutive Water Breathing forms to dissipate his momentum and survives. After being healed by Tamayo, Nezuko rapidly increases in strength, now able to match Susamaru's power. Tamayo uses her Blood Demon Art to lower Susamaru's alertness, causing her to accidentally say Muzan's name and triggering a curse that kills her. She realizes both demons are not of the Twelve Kizuki after examining Susamaru's eyeball, as they do not have a number on their eyes. Tanjiro laments over Muzan's cruelty, lying to demons and using their desperation in his favor. Although Urokodaki had hypnotized her into thinking humans are to be protected, Nezuko's recognition of Tamayo and Yushiro as humans causes her to cry out of thankfulness. The siblings depart for their next mission. Along the way, Tanjiro encounters a Demon Slayer harassing a woman into marrying him.

Tanjiro stops the Demon Slayer, Zenitsu Agatsuma, from disturbing the woman. He reveals he had hoped to die during Final Selection due to his weakness and low resolve. The two are directed by Tanjiro's Kasugai Crow to their next location, a large woodland mansion. They find two children, Shoichi and Teruko, who tell him a demon inside has taken their brother. He and a reluctant Zenitsu enter, leaving Nezuko's box outside when the children unexpectedly enter too. They are then separated by the supernatural rooms, moving to the beat of a drum. Tanjiro, with Teruko, encounters a large demon, the strongest one in the house. While looking for an exit, Zenitsu and Shoichi encounter another Demon Slayer, wearing a boar mask. Tanjiro witnesses the demon's Blood Demon Art, moving the room with the drums in his body, when the boar-headed Demon Slayer suddenly enters the room.

The rogue Slayer argues with Tanjiro over who gets to kill the demon, nearly attacking him when they are assaulted by powerful invisible slashes from the demon’s drumming. Separated into different rooms, Tanjiro finds Teruko's missing brother, Kiyoshi. Zenitsu and Shoichi are cornered by a demon, causing him to loses consciousness out of fear. While asleep, he uses his Thunder Breathing to kill the demon. He wakes up believing that Shoichi had killed the demon. The rogue Demon Slayer also encounters a demon but kills it with ease. The Drum Demon, Kyogai, reveals his intentions to kill Kiyoshi for his blood and reclaim his place amongst the Twelve Kizuki, previously stripped of his rank by Muzan. After directing the siblings to safety, Tanjiro battles Kyogai and begins to adapt to his drums' particular movements. Despite his injuries, he recalls Urokodaki's lessons about Water Breathing's adaptability.

Angered by Tanjiro's refusal to surrender, Kyogai attacks him erratically. He remembers his life as a drum player and composer, but his hobby was rebuked and mocked. Despite his injuries, Tanjiro maintains his Water Breathing and successfully reaches Kyogai, decapitating him. As he dies, he hears Tanjiro acknowledge his Blood Demon Art as incredible and cries as he fades to ash, his drum playing finally recognized. Tanjiro takes Kyogai's blood with a vial and gives the sample to Tamayo's cat. Taking the siblings outside, he discovers Zenitsu, who had been thrown out of the mansion earlier, being kicked by the rogue Demon Slayer for protecting Nezuko's box. He reveals he had known all along Tanjiro had been carrying a demon in the box but chose to believe he had a good reason. Tanjiro defends him and attacks the rogue Slayer.

Tanjiro tries to stop the rogue Demon Slayer by cracking his ribs, who fights back despite the taboo of Demon Slayers harming one another. In a desperate measure, he head-butts his opponent to make him stop, causing his mask to fall off. Revealing a feminine face despite his strong and muscular body, he introduces himself as Inosuke Hashibira. Tanjiro's Kasugai Crow soon directs them to descend the mountain. Bidding the siblings farewell, the three travel to a house, where an elderly woman inside helps them rest and recover. Inosuke informs them the only reason he entered Final Selection was to test out his abilities on demons. Zenitsu asks Tanjiro about his reason for carrying a demon, just as Nezuko exits her box. Angered at Tanjiro for having a girl with him all this time, he chases Tanjiro without allowing him time to explain.

After recovering, the trio are informed of their next mission on Mt. Natagumo and thank their hosts, before departing. As night falls, Zenitsu becomes unwilling to continue the mission. They find another Demon Slayer but see him being pulled back into the mountain. Inosuke and Tanjiro continue while Zenitsu stays behind. They find the forest is covered in spider webs and encounter another Demon Slayer, Murata. He reveals ten of them were sent to the mountain, where they began to spontaneously kill each other. They are attacked by the dead Demon Slayers but realize they are being puppeteered by the webs. They are met by a short pale demon, demanding they leave his family or "Mother" will kill them. Needing a plan, Inosuke uses his Beast Breathing to pinpoint the location of a distant demon. Meanwhile, hearing about the numerous deaths, the Demon Slayer Corps send two Hashiras, Giyu and Shinobu, to assist.

Murata stays to hold off the controlled Demon Slayers, while Tanjiro and Inosuke venture further, where they find the remaining puppets, some of whom are still alive. “Mother”, who controls them, is threatened by her son, Rui, into killing them quickly or face reprimand. Tanjiro and Inosuke discover how to stop the webs but Mother kills them all regardless. They push on but face her strongest puppet: a large, bladed, headless demon, which they successfully kill by coordinating their breathing together. Inosuke then throws Tanjiro into the air where he spots Mother and descends to kill her. Realizing she would be freed from the abuse she has been suffering, she surrenders. Tanjiro opts to use the gentlest Water Breathing form and give her peace. As thanks for blessing her final moments, she warns Tanjiro that a member of the Twelve Kizuki is on the mountain.

While searching for Nezuko, Zenitsu encounters a spider with a human head. He flees but stumbles upon captured Demon Slayers transforming into spiders. "Son" of the Spider Family emerges, revealing he has been bitten and will transform. Believing he will die, he reminisces on his past and reflects on how he repeatedly refused to train despite wanting to make his master proud. Zenitsu loses consciousness and attacks Son, who continually interrupts his form, the first and only form of Thunder Breathing he can do. Despite this, his master encouraged him to hone it to perfection. Against all the pain throughout his life, his master's persistence and stewardship encouraged him to continue. He decapitates Son with his own variation of Thunder Breathing and attempts to slow the poison. Tanjiro and Inosuke encounter “Daughter” and pursue her; she calls out to “Father”, who emerges from the forest.

Giyu and Shinobu arrive at Mt. Natagumo and split up. Tanjiro and Inosuke's blades are unable to cut Father's tough skin; he eventually flings Tanjiro away, leaving Inosuke alone, though he succeeds in cutting off a hand. Zenitsu, near death, is found by Shinobu. After landing in the forest, Tanjiro sees Rui torturing Daughter over "family matters". He calls their familial bond fake, enraging Rui. Tanjiro battles him but is overwhelmed by his powerful threads and is forced on the defensive. Rui, angered by his refusal to back down, threatens to kill him slowly. Inosuke is soon overpowered by Father and is severely wounded, his swords breaking when he attempts to cut Father's neck. He is slowly crushed but is saved when Giyu appears, easily killing Father. Tanjiro tries a frontal attack against Rui but his sword is sliced by an incoming thread.

Impressed by Giyu, Inosuke challenges him but is denied. Shinobu gives Zenitsu an antidote, while the others are tended by Kakushi, trained assistants to the Demon Slayers. Tanjiro barely dodges Rui's thread and is injured; Nezuko then enters the battle to protect him. Seeing their bond, Rui declares her his new sister, before revealing he is Lower Five of the Twelve Kizuki. He takes Nezuko and restrains her in threads, while taunting Tanjiro into beheading him, who fails to do so. Using Water Breathing's strongest form, he cuts through the threads, but Rui strengthens new ones with blood and traps Tanjiro in a Blood Demon Art. Near death, he remembers how his father would perform a night-long ritualistic dance, using a special breathing style. Using the style, Hinokami Kagura, he destroys Rui’s attack and overwhelms him. Rui launches more threads but Nezuko uses her own Blood Demon Art, igniting her blood to burn them away. Using Nezuko's blood on his sword, Tanjiro beheads Rui.

An exhausted Tanjiro tries to reach Nezuko but discovers Rui had beheaded himself, avoiding death. He prepares to kill Tanjiro once more but is intercepted by Giyu. Despite using his strongest threads, he is defeated by Giyu's own Water Breathing form and beheaded. Daughter flees the forest and remembers when she was found by Rui; he had already recruited others into his family, assigning them different roles, but they were tormented by his twisted view of a family. Daughter encounters Murata and traps him in an acidic cocoon. She is then found by Shinobu, who pretends to befriend her but only after punishing her for her murders. Unable to behead demons, she wields a special sword laced with wisteria-based poison. She kills Daughter and frees Murata. Seeing Tanjiro hugging Nezuko, Rui remembers he originally created his family to feel a familial bond.

Rui recalls his past; born with a frail body, he was confined indoors at all times. One night, Muzan found and transformed him. His parents discovered he devoured someone and tried to kill him. He kills them both but realized they only acted out of penance. Muzan claims they didn’t love him, driving Rui to be cold and ruthless. He crawls to Tanjiro, who comforts him after sensing his grief. He is reunited with his parents in Hell, where they forgive him. Giyu scolds Tanjiro for showing demons pity but he defends them as tragic creatures. He remembers the siblings from before and defends them from Shinobu. Tanjiro flees with Nezuko but a girl intercepts them and knocks him unconscious, thought she fails to kill Nezuko. A Kasugai Crow calls out that the siblings are to be taken to the Demon Slayer Headquarters, while Inosuke and Zenitsu are taken as well to recover. Tanjiro then awakens to find himself in front of the Hashira.

The Hashira, the strongest of the Demon Slayer Corps, put Tanjiro on trial, discussing whether he and Nezuko should be executed alongside Giyu, who defended him against their rules. Tanjiro explains his situation but they discredit it as bias. The Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa, stabs Nezuko through her box, leading Tanjiro to attack him. Entering the trial, their leader, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, reveals he has sanctioned Tanjiro’s situation. When the Hashira still disagree, he reveals a letter from Urokodaki, the former Water Hashira, who believes Nezuko to be capable of resisting humans and that he, Giyu, and Tanjiro would kill themselves should it happen. Kagaya also reveals that Tanjiro has also met Muzan. Though the Hashira realize his importance, Sanemi aims to prove Nezuko can't be trusted. He cuts his forearm, stabs Nezuko again, and taunts her with his blood. She emerges from her box and stares at him, salivating.

In front of all, Nezuko resists Sanemi's taunts and turns away. Kagaya, seeing this as proof, officially acknowledges both as Demon Slayers. With his trial concluded, the siblings are taken by the Kakushi to Shinobu's estate, the Butterfly Mansion, to recover. They encounter Shinobu's protegeé, Kanao Tsuyuri, who Tanjiro recognizes as the girl from Final Selection. He reunites with Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Murata, who are recovering from their previous battles. During a meeting that night, the Hashira reflect on the worsening damage caused by demons and the less skilled newer Demon Slayers. Kagaya realizes that Rui's drastic actions are a diversion to hide Muzan’s location, as he did in Asakusa. Despite the shortcomings, Kagaya recognizes them all as the strongest Hashira since the beginning and reaffirms his faith in them. He vows that they will kill Muzan without fail.

After recovering, Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu partake in Rehabilitation Training, involving three unusual challenges. Zenitsu and Inosuke eventually quit when they cannot defeat their opponent, Kanao, leaving Tanjiro alone. The girls of the Butterfly Mansion; Sumi, Kiyo, and Naho, reveal Kanao's use of a different technique called Total Concentration Constant, as well as training with special gourds. Motivated, Tanjiro uses the mansion's surroundings as make-shift obstacles and practices maintaining Total Concentration at all times. Shinobu commends his spirit and entrusts him with her dream of peace between humans and demons. Tanjiro asks if she is angry despite always smiling. Surprised, Shinobu speaks of the pain of seeing the harm demons create; she tells him about her elder sister, who was sympathetic to demons like him. When she was killed, Shinobu tried to adopt her kind personality but struggled, seeing demons as irredeemable. Hearing her trust in him, Tanjiro remembers the pain of his family's death and his promise to Nezuko.

After extensive training, Tanjiro improves his abilities considerably. Zenitsu and Inosuke see his progression and consult Shinobu. Before long, all three are motivated to improve. Shinobu encourages Kanao to join them in training; she flips a coin and remembers her past. Born to an abusive family, she broke psychologically for showing emotion. She was found by Shinobu and her sister Kanae and adopted as a sister. Despite her inability to make decisions, Kanae refused to give up and gives her a coin to help her decide. Kanao walks away from the trio training after making her choice. Tanjiro and Inosuke receive new swords from Haganezuka and Kozo Kanamori respectively, though both are angered at their work being mistreated. Tanjiro soon succeeds in beating Kanao. During a physical exam, he asks Shinobu about his Hinokami Kagura; unsure, she directs him towards the Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku. Alone with Nezuko, Tanjiro reaffirms his goal to aid Tamayo's research and return his sister's humanity. She unexpectedly encourages him, giving him hope.

After Rui's death, Muzan summons the remaining five Lower Ranks – Lower Six Kamanue, Lower Four Mukago, Lower Three Wakuraba, Lower Two Rokuro, and Lower One Enmu – within an interdimensional castle. Angered by their weakness, he kills them all but spares Enmu, strengthening him with his blood; Muzan also incentivizes killing Tanjiro to attain more. In the present, the trio are assigned to join Kyojuro on a train to investigate its disappearances. He farewells the mansion’s inhabitants, including Kanao, who after explaining her process of flipping a coin to make personal choices, Tanjiro convinces to instead listen to the voice of her heart and decide herself, leaving Kanao smitten by his kindness. He also thanks Giyu for his dedication to protect Nezuko. The three arrive at the train station, but Inosuke causes a scene, attracting the police and forcing them to flee due to Demon Slayers not being recognized by the government. They jump onto the train as it leaves, which has Kyojuro and Enmu on board.

Home media release

The series was released in Japan by Aniplex on eleven Blu-ray and DVD volumes beginning on July 31, 2019, and concluded on June 24, 2020. Each volume features cover art illustrated by the series' character designer, Akira Matsushima, and the limited-edition includes bonus CD containing original drama or soundtrack. Aniplex of America released the first limited-edition Blu-ray volume in North America on June 30, 2020, and the second volume was released on November 24, 2020. The company, in partnership with Funimation, released the standard-edition Blu-ray volumes in September 2020 and January 2021.
