La Ciudad de las Ideas ([la θjuˈðað ðe las iˈðeas]) (stylized as CDI and translated as "The City of Ideas" in English) was an annual conference held in Puebla, Mexico. It was produced by Mexican writer and television producer Andrés Roemer. The conference aimed to discuss ideas in science, technology, art, design, politics, education, culture, business, and entertainment.

From 2008 to 2021, up to 3,600 attendees gathered each November in the historic centre of Puebla.[1][2] The head and curator of CDI was Andrés Roemer, partner of the non-governmental organization Poder Civico A.C., along with Ricardo Salinas Pliego, President and CEO of Grupo Salinas. Since June 9, 2008, over 231 festival speakers have had their presentations published online.
Past CDI speakers have included Nobel Prize winners such as physicist Jerome Isaac Friedman, chemist Mario J. Molina, political activist Jody Williams, psychologist Daniel Kahneman, and economist Paul Krugman. Oscar nominees Adame Pesapane (PES) and Oliver Stone also spoke at the event. Other CDI speakers include Robert Sapolsky, Steven Pinker, Eduard Punset, Clotaire Rapaille, Tim Berners-Lee, David Buss, Richard Dawkins, Michael Shermer, Craig Venter, and Randi Zuckerberg.
La Ciudad de las Ideas was cancelled in 2021 due to multiple allegations of sexual abuse aimed at its curator Andrés Roemer. It has been replaced with the "Festival de las Ideas".[3]
History edit
2008: Cynosura edit
The first conference took place in Puebla's Convention Center in 2008. Its name was derived from the star Polaris, also named Cynosura by the Greeks, relating to the Ursa Minor constellation. Cynosura took place from November 6-8, with each speaker given 21 minutes to present. The conference commemorated the 100th anniversary of the scandal caused by the String Quartet No.2 in F Sharp Minor by the Austrian composer, Arnold Schoenberg.[citation needed]
2009: Re-evolution edit
From 2009 onward, the University's Cultural Complex of the Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla became the International Brilliant Minds Festival's official venue. La Ciudad de las Ideas celebrated the International Year of Astronomy with a "night of telescopes", and from 2009 to 2012, innovative ideas in science and humanities were acknowledged with the Innovation for Humanity Prize and the Entrepreneur for Humanity Prize.
The recipients of the 2008 Innovation for Humanity Prize were Daniel Dennett and Steven Pinker. In the same year, the Entrepreneur for Humanity Prize recognized the contributions of nearly 300 individuals.
2010: The Origins of the future edit
In 2010, CDI commemorated two historical events relevant to Mexico: the Bicentennial Independence Day Anniversary and the Centennial Anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. The 2010 edition took place in the University Cultural Complex at the Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla on November 11-13, where over 33 speakers attended.
The winners of the Innovation for Humanity Prize in 2009 were Dan Ariely and Philip Zimbardo, and the Entrepreneur for Humanity Prize acknowledged 200 individuals.
2011: Reset edit
This edition of CDI took place on November 10-12 in 2011 in the University Cultural Complex at the Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla. As in 2009, the "night of telescopes" took place on Friday, the 11th, at 7:00 pm.
The winners of the Innovation for Humanity Prize in 2010 were Michio Kaku and Richard Dawkins. The Entrepreneur for Humanity Prize was awarded to 120 individuals.
2012: The Magic of If edit
The fifth edition of the festival was titled "The Magic of If" and took place on November 8-10 in 2012 at the University Cultural Complex of the Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla. It included a new section dedicated to Mexican talent, called "Mex-I-can". The time for speakers to present was reduced from 21 to 12 minutes.
The winners of the Innovation for Humanity Prize in 2011 were Eduard Punset, Oliver Stone and Dambisa Moyo. For the 2012 edition, the Entrepreneur for Humanity Prize was transformed into a prize with great reach and significance, turning into an initiative that stimulated a social entrepreneurship project called Gifted Citizen Prize.
2013: Dangerous Ideas edit
The festival's sixth edition took place at the same location on November 7-9 in 2013, with the title of "Dangerous Ideas". The festival was noted for inviting youth who are changing the world, like Jack Andraka, Boyan Slat, and Umi Garrett.
2014: Change the Word edit
The seventh edition of La Ciudad de las Ideas Festival took place from 6 to 8 November. This was the first time it was held at the Metropolitan Auditorium of Puebla.
2015: What's the Point? edit
The 8th edition of CDI was held on November 5-7 at the Metropolitan Auditorium of Puebla. In this edition, Isaac Hernández and Esteban Hernández danced while being accompanied by Yuan Yuan Tan and Jurgita Dronina. A total of 60 speakers participated.
2016: Play the Game edit
Play the Game took place from 18 to 20 November. The festival featured personalities such as Tim Urban and artistic talents such as Julieta Venegas, Ximena Sariñana, and Butterscotch.
2017: Beyond X November edit
CDI 2017 took place at the Metropolitan Auditorium of Puebla in November 17-19. The tenth edition had speakers like Mario Molina, Noam Chomsky, Steven Pinker, and Esther Perel.
2018: The Burning Questions edit
The Burning Questions took place at the Metropolitan Auditorium of Puebla in November 16-18. More than 60 speakers from different areas such as economics, science, politics, and technology participated.
2019: This Is Epic! edit
The twelfth edition, CDI 2019: "This Is Epic!", took place from 8 to 10 November at the Metropolitan Auditorium of Puebla. Personalities such as Rigoberta Menchú, Guy Nattiv, Stefan Sagmeister, Siddhartha Mukherjee, Javier Santaolalla and Yusef Salaam attended.
2021: End of Ciudad de las Ideas edit
In February 2021, the dancer and producer Itzel Schnaas denounced Andrés Roemer Slomianski for sexual abuse that he allegedly carried out against her during her employment. Along with her case, 61 other women alleged sexual assault by the curator of the event between 2002 and 2020. In May of the same year, the Attorney General's Office (Mexico) (FGR) issued an order of extradition against Roemer, but due to his flight to Israel, INTERPOL had to be contacted to issue a red card.[4] He was arrested on 2 October 2023 by the Israeli Police for the crime of sexual abuse, and he is currently awaiting his extradition to Mexico.[5]
Due to these events, in 2021 the "Ciudad de las Ideas" event was replaced by the Festival de las Ideas, with Ricardo Obert Martínez being replaced as director.[6]
Gifted Citizen Initiative edit
This initiative began at La Ciudad de las Ideas 2012. Submitted projects were evaluated by a committee and the conference board of directors.[7] The project could have been scientific, technological, social, ecological or artistic, as well as concerning development or human rights. The most outstanding project was awarded US $100,000. This prize was given in association with the Singularity University.
The GZ Prize was known as the "Entrepreneur for Humanity Prize" from 2009 to 2011.

Ideasta edit
The term "ideasta" was coined by Dr. Andrés Roemer and refers to the assistant of La Ciudad de las Ideas,[14] one of the most important international festivals of bright minds held in Puebla City, Mexico. "Ideasta" denotes a person who participates, encourages and otherwise interacts with the project that celebrates the most brilliant minds in the globe, but also formulates creative and revolutionary ideas about the world; a 'converter of society in an inclusive prosperity,'[15] and the one who comes up with new ways of thinking to create more knowledge, novel paradigms, innovations and inventions to enhance its mind and open itself to multiple horizons, allowing it growth and development, because ideas:
[...] are the engine of the economies around the world. Innovation allows humans to produce more and better, think of an iPod, on Facebook, on skyscrapers, or on spaceships that allow us to go into space. All this technology originated from ideas that gradually boosted other ideas. When we bring exceptional people to talk about concepts or exceptional theories, we are forced to expand our horizons. It makes us aware of problems, solutions, projects, technologies or studies that we had no idea existed. This can inspire a train of thought that could lead to other innovative ideas. This is the exponential growth of ideas.[16]
