The Church of Christ was founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith. It went by the names "Church of Christ" (1830–34), "Church of the Latter Day Saints" (1834–38), and the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" (1838–44). After Smith's death, there was a succession crisis and the Latter Day Saints divided into multiple groups, the largest of which became The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Today, the LDS Church and most other Latter Day Saint denominations all claim to be the rightful continuation of Smith's original Church of Christ.
