Aashirvad Cinemas was founded by Mohanlal's former chauffeur Antony Perumbavoor in 2000. Its debut production was Narasimham (2000), an action film directed by Shaji Kailas and scripted by Ranjith. The plot follows Induchoodan (Mohanlal), who is homecoming after a 6-year long prison sentence for a crime he did not commit. Induchoodan is a shame to his father, a retired Supreme Court Chief Justice. However, in turn of events, his father is accused of a homicide, which he pleads not guilty, now Induchoodan has to save his father from the same fate he had. Narasimham was a record-breaking box office success and turned to be the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever, until then. The company's next film was the action drama Raavanaprabhu (2001) written and directed by Ranjith, the film also marked his directorial debut. It was a sequel to the 1993 film Devasuram, also written by Ranjith. Mohanlal reprises the role of Mangalassery Neelakantan, and also played a new character, M. N. Karthikeyan, his son. In the film, the rivalry between Neelakantan and Mundakkal Sekharan is now continued by Karthikeyan. Raavanaprabhu was the highest-grossing Malayalam film of that year. The film won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value.
