World No. 1 Simona Halep won her first Grand Slam title, defeating Sloane Stephens in the final, 3–6, 6–4, 6–1.[2] She became the second Romanian woman to win a Grand Slam title after the 1978 French Open champion Virginia Ruzici.[3] She also became the sixth woman to win both the senior and junior title, having won the latter in 2008.[3]

Halep retained the WTA no. 1 singles ranking after defeating fellow contender Garbiñe Muguruza in the semifinals.[4] In addition to Halep and Muguruza, Caroline Wozniacki, Elina Svitolina, Karolína Plíšková and Caroline Garcia were also in contention for the top ranking at the start of the tournament.[5]

The elimination on the first day of the tournament of Sara Errani, Francesca Schiavone and Venus Williams, in addition to Ostapenko, ensured a first-time French Open finalist from the bottom half of the draw. Williams' loss to Wang Qiang marked the first time she had lost in the first round in back-to-back majors in her career.

This was Schiavone's final Grand Slam that she appeared and would announce her retirement months later.[6]

This tournament marked the first time that Agnieszka Radwańska did not play in the main draw of a Grand Slam singles event since her debut at the 2006 Wimbledon Championships, ending a streak of 47 consecutive appearances.[7]

This was Serena Williams' first Grand Slam appearance since the 2017 Australian Open and giving birth to her daughter in September 2017. She was unseeded in a Grand Slam singles event for the first time since the 2007 Australian Open.[8] Williams was attempting to equal Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles. She was also attempting to become only the second player, after Steffi Graf, to complete a quadruple career Grand Slam. However, she withdrew before her fourth round match against Maria Sharapova due to a pectoral muscle injury, ended her streak of 10 consecutive major quarterfinals dated back from 2014 US Open (she did not play between 2017 French Open and 2018 Australian Open due to pregnancy and maternity leave).[9]
