Reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo crashed heavily during free practice in wet conditions, and fractured his left collarbone. After surgery he was able to take part in the race.

Valentino Rossi took the victory from Marc Márquez and pole sitter Cal Crutchlow, his first win of the season, and the first since the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix. Lorenzo did a stunning ride despite his left collarbone injury to finish in a commendable 5th place, behind Dani Pedrosa who fell back in the latter stages.

Marc Márquez, Valentino Rossi and Cal Crutchlow, celebrating on the podium after finishing second, first and third at the MotoGP race.
