Seattle portal!

I don't get how the "selected pictures" magic works. I made several suggestions a couple of days ago that are still sitting as suggestions; the "more pictures" is blank, so I can't tell what pictures are already "selected"; and I don't get the mechanism by which a particular picture is displayed. - Jmabel | Talk 18:29, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

List of buildings in Seattle

There seem to be no criteria for inclusion in List of buildings in Seattle. There are some pretty obscure inclusions (e.g. the East Republican Street Stairway) and some remarkable omissions (nothing in Pike Place Market, nothing on any college campus). Would someone be interested in taking this under their wing and setting out criteria? Or should we just delete the damn thing and let categories and maybe a Wikipedia-space list of articles we are missing do this work? - Jmabel | Talk 03:21, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

I just did a little bit of work on Pioneer Square, Seattle, Washington, but it's a really anemic little article on a topic that could easily merit a book. I've been wanting to start an article on the Pioneer Square totem pole for a while, but can't seem to get around to it. Being Seattle's first piece of public art and a major icon for the city during the early 20th century, it seems worthy of at article. There are some nice photos at the Commons now (perhaps yours, Jmabel, I can't remember offhand). The totem pole is mentioned in several articles, but mainly in bits and pieces about how it was stolen from the Tlingit and how is was burned and replaced later on. There's a lot more that could be said, especially wrt how it so clearly symbolized Seattle's desired (and acquired) role at the "gateway to the north". Not only did it help usher in the use of Native American artwork as a symbol of Seattle (and mainly styles from the north rather than "local Indians" -- like totem poles themselves), but it was intentionally placed so that it faced to the northwest, toward the Yukon and Alaska. Eventually its role as Seattle's symbolic icon with connotations of the PNW coast to Alaska, Indians and gold, was overshadowed by the "new totem pole" -- the Space Needle, with rather different connotations! Anyway, if I don't manage to get around to it, maybe somebody else will. The newish book Native Seattle has a lot of useful info for such a page. Pfly (talk) 00:20, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Category:Landmarks in Seattle

What, if anything, are the criteria for inclusion in Category:Landmarks in Seattle vs. Category:Buildings and structures in Seattle? Why on earth is the Mercer Arena a landmark while Benaroya Hall is not? (Oh, and the Camlin Hotel is in both, violating the rule about including something in two levels of the category hierarchy.) I suspect that this is a distinction without a difference. It seems to me that if we are to continue to have this category, it should only be for buildings and structures with city landmark designation, NRHP listing, etc. - Jmabel | Talk 08:53, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

The only problem I see with that is that it means nothing built in the last 25 years will be included. But I think that's OK, in order to have a meaningful category.

Maybe add a Category:Registered Historic Places in Seattle as a subcat of Category:Registered Historic Places in Washington and Category:Buildings and structures in Seattle? Yes, but if we are going through the work of checking, I'd rather separate the national designations from the local. I've removed all buildings and structures without landmark status from Category:Landmarks in Seattle, which turned out to mean removing the vast majority of the articles from the category. Where would be the best place for an article about the Seattle First Methodist Church? The building, next to the Rainier Club on 5th and Marion, isn't on the list of Seattle landmarks because of a long legal battle that culminated in a state supreme court ruling. There are a lot of notable buildings that have been judged not to be landmarks in the legal sense. I believe its correct name is "First United Methodist Church"; if I'm correct, then the article would to at First United Methodist Church (Seattle, Washington) (following the pattern laid down at disambiguation page First United Methodist Church), and would belong at least in Category:Buildings and structures in Seattle, Washington. Lots of photos available at Commons:Category:First United Methodist Church (Seattle). The legal battle would be a relevant part of an article on the building, but not of the "list of landmarks" article. Georgetown PowerPlant Museum

I recently visited the Georgetown PowerPlant Museum and took a lot of photos. I'm pretty happy with these aesthetically, but to be honest for the most part I don't know much about what I was looking at, and they could use far better descriptions than I can give them. If anyone knows their way around the museum or steam technology for power generation, then help would be welcome throughout Commons:Category:Georgetown PowerPlant Museum. And landmarks

I've been also working on photos for List of Landmarks in Seattle. I'm down to about 20 without photos, and should knock off the bulk of the rest over the next few weeks.

A few I have issues similar to the ones mentioned above:

• Great American Food and Beverage Co. Street Clock: GAF&B is now the Lake Union Cafe (used as a banqueting hall). The clock is long gone. Anyone have a photo?
• MV Malibu
• MV Thea Foss

• Snagboat W. T. Preston - in Anacortes, anyone up that way who can get a photo?
• Queen Anne Water Tank #1: the historic structure is gone, replaced by something rather dull. Does anyone have a photo of the historic structure?
• Queen Anne Boulevard is described by the Dep't of Neighborhoods only as "certain Streets on Queen Anne Hill". Parks & Recreation doesn't say much more. I could make guesses, but does someone actually know which streets?

I've added a bunch of uncovered (or woefully undercovered) topics to the "open tasks" list and will doubtless add more. Would anyone object to removing articles that are in decent shape from this list? John Butler

Does anyone know anything about a Seattle painter named John Butler, an early teacher at the Cornish School? I can't make out whether he merits an article or not. Petosa

Petosa Accordions in Wallingford certainly deserves an article. Founded 1922, in Wallingford ever since, in current location since 1955. Photos available in Commons:Category:Petosa Accordions and Commons:Category:Petosa Accordions collection. Not a lot of citable sources, but here's a good one: Audio of interview with Joe Petosa, KUOW, 1 February, 2008. According to the program, they also started a factory in Italy in 1946, and stopped really manufacturing in Seattle in 1992. Now, even in Italy, it is hard to get a qualified workforce so their factory there has reduced output. "We'll continue as long as we can continue…" - Jmabel | Talk 05:58, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Idea for skyline template

... but it's sure there some place. This comes from Richard C. Berner, Seattle 1900-1920: From Boomtown, Urban Turbulence, to Restoration (1991), Seattle: Charles Press, ISBN 0962988901, p. 118-121.

When Hiram Gill was elected mayor in 1910, he appointed "Wappy" Wappenstein as chief of police. Their "open city" administration was dramatically corrupt, to the point of being a national news story. The police chief cut a graft deal with vice bosses Clarence Gerald and Gideon Tupper: his payoffs amounted to a tax on prostitution, paid into his pocket. Gambling was rampant all over town. Tupper and Gerald were so emboldened that they formed the Hillside Improvement Company to build a resort on Beacon Hill including a 500-room brothel (which was actually built, but became an ordinary apartment house after Gill was recalled as mayor). Oh, and the would-be brothel was so big that it required a street vacation. Etc. Maybe it all belongs in an article on Gill (this was only part of a very checkered career), but I think "Wappy" probably deserves one as well. And possibly some of this should make its way into one of the Seattle history article series. (Berner doesn't say so, but I'm pretty sure that I've read elsewhere that the apartment building in question eventually was destroyed when an airplane crashed into it, so the building really might have article potential in its own right.) - Jmabel | Talk 06:27, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Another interesting reference

I didn't know this early Seattle history: History of Seattle, Washington: With Illustrations and Biographical Sketches (1891), Frederic James Grant, written about 40 years after the Denny Party landed. I'm guessing it's the first history book about the city. Cinderella Liberty

Cinderella Liberty: not much more than a stub. Filmed on location in Seattle. It's a good visual take on Seattle in the early 1970s. Historic Chinatown Gate

I noticed the "is one of many articles we could cite, but we should also find something about controversy over the name (both "historic" and "Chinatown" were controversial.)" and wanted to point out that "Chinatown" has historically been separate from Little Saigon. Chinatown/International District is the current official name of the complete neighborhood. The term "Chinatown" should be OK. I also noticed that "Historic" (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/346306_gate07.html) was used in the foundation name for whatever reason. The gate may or may not be note worthy but I don't believe controversy should be a problem.Cptnono (talk) 04:58, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

1915 Port of Seattle facility

I found this image, published 1915, and uploaded it. However, I can't work out quite where it is. It looks like it would be somewhere south of the Pioneer Square area, but the sign on the building at center distinctly says "Port of Seattle". The only Port building that early that I know is the one at Bell Street. Does anyone know anything about a Port facility this far south at that early date? Tyee Educational Complex and school merge idea

Should the three individual schools in the Tyee Educational Complex be merged into the article about the complex? After a school reorganization the Tyee Campus has three individual schools. Seattle Sounders FC task force

Hi all. I've created a proposal for a Seattle Sounders FC task force, which can be viewed here. The goal of the task for is to improve articles related to the Seattle Sounders FC team. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Hey. So we currently have a number of unassessed articles in the project. There is a bot, DodoBot (talk · contribs) who can copy over assessments from other project tags, and auto-assess if there is a {{stub}} template on the article. US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Banner merge

Proposal: Upmerging the {{WikiProject Seattle}} tag into {{WikiProject Washington}}. The Seattle project would remain separate from the larger project, but it makes sense since a vast majority of our articles are tagged with both banners already. The Seattle portion of the tag would look something like the Eastern Washington task force does:

I would propose a "tag" of "This page is supported by the Seattle WikiProject", and a link to the Seattle portal as well (see {{WikiProject Canada}} for how sub portals look.

This seems logical, although I'm wondering if this would make WikiProject Seattle less visible. Then again, the Space Needle image is iconic so maybe it wouldn't be an issue. I'm guessing we'd still be using it.

How, specifically, would this be done? Would we just modify {{WikiProject Seattle}}? If so, would we then need to remove {{WikiProject Washington}} on talk pages that have both Seattle and Washington, or would we just leave them? It makes perfect sense to me. It wouldn't be hard to replace the Seattle tag with Washington/Settle. I have done this a couple times already with WikiProject US so if you need help let me know. I could also add additional articles but I think we should transition that ones arlready associated to WPSeattle first. I just did a little checking and here are a couple things I found

1. out of 786 articles tagged with WPSeattle WP Washington already has 764 of them so its just a metter of adding the task force flag and eliminating the Settle banner.
2. WPWashington has about 6200 articles and Catgory Washington has over 8500.

Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Bob Whitsitt

Whilst reviewing Unreferenced Biographies of Living People, I found the Bob Whitsitt article. As I googled him and read the article, I quickly realised that he is a controversial figure, so referencing one or facts in the article isn't really sufficient. Could someone who's more familiar with his career take a look at it, as we need all articles, and especially all BLPs to be referenced. Are The Stranger and Puget Sound Business Journal reliable sources for a BLP?

The article Marcus Charles was created by an SPU based on citations from The Stranger and Puget Sound Business Journal. Do these qualify as WP:RS for BLP? — Sebastian 19:09, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

Yes, in general they both meet Wikipedia's minimum requirements in WP:RS. The Stranger often includes opinion in their news articles, so you have to pay attention to what's being said. If a particular fact is in disupte between The Stranger and a larger news organization, I'd probably go with the larger one. If an extraordinary claim is being made in The Stranger, but isn't corroborated in any other source, I'd probably leave it out. Or else attribute it by name to the article's author.

If what you're really asking is if Marcus Charles should be speedy deleted, then you should de-prod the article and take it to AFD. We shouldn't be having the AFD discussion here. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 19:43, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

A bit moribund

This WikiProject seems a bit moribund. I'd be interested in trying to revive it; maybe prepare a good current list of articles that need work, articles to be started, and probably images needed. I'll probably be ready to give this some focus around mid-June of this year. Is there anyone else who would also like to work on this? I wouldn't mind helping out with researching and going out and taking pictures. I'm currently focusing on getting Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel to a possible WP:TFA on its upcoming 25th anniversary this September, along with tons of other transit articles that are in dire need of some attention. Housing discrimination in Seattle

The Seattle Civil Rights & Labor History Project at UW has a trove of material that we should be using to expand Seattle and related articles. Currently there is no mention of redlining and racially restrictive covenants in the Seattle article, or in History of Seattle or the Timeline of Seattle or Demographics of Seattle. Columbia City, Seattle is the only article I could find that makes passing mention of housing discrimination. The History article claims that Seattle's neighborhoods evolved organically with no central planing, but there is of course decades of evidence that racial segregationist policies are the reason for the current racial makeup of the city. There are excellent maps that illustrate this over time, which we should be able to reproduce with various mapping tools, as well as copy any maps out of copyright or made by government sources.

It's particularly interesting to note that this is not ancient history. Position 9 City Council Candidate Bill Bradburd has strongly denounced the UW findings, and the Mayor's Housing Report specifically because it includes the conclusion that Seattle single family neighborhood's are the result of a segregationist past. It appears that those who oppose upzoning, adding density to single family areas, etc, in favor of the status quo, find it politically uncomfortable to say how Seattle's neighborhoods got this way.

I know this sounds very POV to say, but housing segregation in Seattle is a historical fact with zero opposition from credible historians. Wikipedia's policy is to generally conform to that, while giving adequate attention to the significant modern political movement that denies it. Given that even a Featured Article like Seattle makes no mention of this history, it's not surprising that much of the public believes it never happened here.

So there's a great opportunity to expand several articles to cover this history, and the UW has done most of the work for us. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 21:18, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
