  2. 2004-12-29T22:45Z - I just think Wiikipedia has a systematic bias against many things biology and nature and chemistry and countryside. Specifically, it has a systematic bias when it comes to topics about sexuality. Wikipedia centers too much on human sexuality, but disregards things about biology that are essential to discussing sexuality. For, example, Wikipedia doesn't care to distinguish between "pregnancy" and "gestation" or sexual intercourse" and "copulation". Here on Wikipedia many people think that the world is just about the human world but not nature or natural sciences.
  3. 52 Pickup - History, geography and politics in Australia and Europe. Attempting to reduce misuse and abuse of non-English words and inaccurate translations. Set up WikiProject Former countries as a way of providing a neutral framework for presentation of historical states. I also work on translating and clarifying articles from the German and Dutch wikis.
  4. A R King - Expertise in minority languages, both in and outside Europe. I am also "informally" interested in related non-linguistic issues, such as cultural/political etc. minorities. While sympathetic with the overall concept of trying to compensate for systemic bias, I think SB will always exist (and therefore always need to be fought against) because it is inherent to the encyclopaedic project. I also think it is deceiving (and betrays bias) to think that the English Wikipedia can or should be "unbiased", as opposed to other-language Wikipedias, which are what? allowed to be biased??

  6. Aelffin - This is a very good effort. The possibility of representing all points of view is one of the great possibilities that comes from Wikipedia's lack of space limitations. Articles are not nearly as comprehensive as they could be.

User:Afddiary - As a black female Wikipedian (from the USA) who is also a member of the LGBT community, I have noticed bias in all areas central to my identity, as well as in articles about topics regarding human rights and violations thereof, namely the death penalty.   15. AlMac - I am a newbie here. My profession, for the past 40+ years, has been computer programming on mid sized computer networks, currently AS/400. I have had limited exposure to Analog Computers and other kinds. The vast majority of Wikipeans only know of Personal Computer which is a Systemic bias in discussing computer topics.   20. Anthon.Eff -The biases I am most conscious of are these three: anti-Turkish bias, pro-political correctness bias, and pro-secularis bias. I am hopeful that the first can be diminished. The latter two might be neccessary evils in an encylopedia that anyone can edit.

  27. ArXivist - This is an excellent project idea! I have been having a problem with a group of users who are totally biased against and hostile towards alternative viewpoints. This is an example of systemic bias which I have not found when viewing articles in other language wikis. I think this project coupled with a reform in the WP:Reliable Sources standard to counter corporate, Anglo-American, and Anglophone bias would greatly help realize the ideal of Wikipedia as a universal knowledge repository.

AugurNZ ✐⌕ 11:46, 20 September 2013 (UTC) — While trying to write an article about a disability-related event, I encountered this systemic bias when, while trying to assert notability for my new article, most of the sources I could find were from non-mainstream media. I was told by a host at the Teahouse that if none of the mainstream media covered the festival, "then it isn't notable by Wikipedia's standards. That's how we roll. That's how we maintain our standards." The problem is, the mainstream media tend to wholly ignore events about or for the disabled community, so this attitude perpetuates a systemic bias in Wikipedia against disability as well. I have added WikiProject Disability to the WikiProjects relevant for countering systemic bias category.[reply]

  38. B. Fairbairn (talk) 05:47, 26 June 2011 (UTC) Wikipedia is by far the best website in the world when it comes to providing information on any subject. The only criticism I have is that owing to the large proportion of Americans who contribute to the site there is a distinctive bias. I am from another country and have found that there is a tendency among some of my compatriots not to use Wikipedia owing to the US bias present. Ameri-pedia is a term sometimes used to describe Wikipedia where I live. An example of bias is in the Superpower page. There are 3 images on the page: One shows Reagan and Gorbachev (which is entirely appropriate), and the other two are blatantly pro-American propaganda, one showing a massive US flag at the New York Stock Exhange and the other an American aircraft carrier. I have removed these images as not being appropriate to the page but other users keep undoing changes I make. The same applies to various other pages. Is there some way of stopping this bias from continually occurring?[reply]

Barefact 07:44, 26 November 2008 (UTC) I am fascinated with Turkic history, and find that many WP articles pertaining to Turkic history are pathetic in content, deliberately impoverished to present a partial and debilitating picture. Many articles were completely deleted because they fall outside of Eurocentric vision. For an artticle completely devoid of its historical merits, see Kipchaks. Even the simple terminological coneventions need to be stripped from anti-Turkic bias.[reply]

It seems like a vicious cycle, the only way we can truly have a Wiki free of a systematic bias is if everyone spoke all languages of the world and lived in every country of the world (geopolitical bias); achieved a utopia having achieved class equality (that way we can have construction workers who also contribute etc) and generalized scientific education on a global scale (inclusion of non-scientific myths and narratives as being more important than scientific versions).   46. bcatt - I am really noticing this bias in many ways. I think I have been successful in hoding it as a personal policy in my edits so far, but would like to up this effort to an more active level by specifically improving biased articles or portions thereof, and maybe even by specifically seeking out biased articles. Also wanted to note that a particular area of interest for me is a bias for highlighting, or treating as more important, articles on subjects that are very well known but restricted to a small or limited demographic than that of topics that are more widely (or even universally) applicable but are less well-known or realized. bcatt 00:51, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  55. Big Adamsky - WP is a great source of facts and perspectives, with some pages containing biases and others overcompensating to preempt any accusations of bias, leading to bias ;-]. I have visited and lived in several countries and speak several languages and I feel I have a great deal to contribute in the fields of geography, history, current events and related social sciences.

I spend a lot of time trying to edit articles & expand stubs from Wikipedia:WikiProject Mexican-Americans but instead I find myself fighting off vandals, trolls, sockpuppets and Wikianarchists who want to use Wikipedia to express their hatred toward Mexican-Americans and/or Mexicans. (Many of them do not know the difference.) Their MO is to post pejorative terms, re-write articles to suit their POV, and engage in disruptive editing which creates a poisonous editorial environment, disturbs the article's editorial team, and generally works to create havoc, burn out good editors, and ruin what had been a decent article where many editors worked hard to build consensus.[reply]

User:Cosmodeluxe14:14 11 June 2009 - Most articles relating to American aggression against other nations is couched in the language and euphemisms of the US government and the mainstream US media. When I have tried to add more detailed info about such aggresions, they have been deleted. For example, Nixon and Kissinger are presented from the US perspective, but the several million civilians killed by their criminal policy of massive, indiscriminate bombing in Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia are barely even alluded to. The bias is blatant - obviously millions of South Americans know about Kissingers support for right-wing military dictatorships just as millions of S.E. Asians are familiar with his participation in the destruction of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam but the readers of Wikipedia are, for some reason, protected from this knowledge. Also, when a Wiki article states, for example, that US foriegn policy is designed to foster 'democracy', the Wiki reader should be told that although this is what the US government says, it is, in actuality, far from true - the US has much more often supported dictatorships (Marcos, Pinochet, Saddam Hussein (pre-war), Mboto, etc, etc) while the list of countries where the US has actually brought about real democracy is very short indeed. Such bias in what should be a global information site is a shame. Wiki is far too biased in favour of supporting the veiws and frames of reference of already established elites. Does anybody else notice this?

DJCheburashka -- I'm principally concerned with the way systemic bias accumulates regarding pages for individuals (where a small number of people have a strong desire to shift the page one way, and more people have a less intense desire to prevent bias), and pages subject to upper-middle-class-white-person-centric bias. My areas of particular interest and expertise involve fraudsters, the capital markets, identifying fraud, and evaluation of statistical claims in the social sciences.

Maybe also edit the odd article or seven that give the impression that Europe is just one country, or the odd article that forgets to consider that "the law" doesn't automatically refer to US or UK Law (unless, of course, the article is about something like, er, UK Law.

  136. Drsyd - I believe there is a bias in holistic and alternative health. I am a doctor that believes in medicine as well as alternative therapies. When I try to edit any topic in holistic health, the bias stems toward shunning it altogether while ignoring modern studies and research. I feel articles should be required to allow more than one point of view to allow other users to point out the new research and modern science.

  139. Duey Finster - I dont feel as strongly about Systematic Bias, simply because Wikipedia will always be reflective of those who edit, be they in a minority or majority. I do feel conscious about it when I edit, but putting a "Global View" or "Local View" isn't always the right thing to do, lets make sure it fits into the project, its encyclopedic and is fact with sources, of that I am much more concerned than Systematic Bias. Nevertheless I support the effort to get more people from every background concievable to help make Wikipedia the most valuable free knowledge resource in the world.

Erictheenquirer - I have become concerned by the under-representation of scholarly sources by Palestinians in articles about (or close to) the Israel-Palestine issue, a problem already signalled by Israeli historian Benny Morris in 1988. While this is to a certain extent a language obstacle, those that are published in English are often on 'watchdog' sites which are frequently the target of non-WP:RS accusations, usually based on 'advocacy'. As a result, the alternative Palestinian view suffers from susceptibility to failing WP:DUE, which can easily doubly compound the systematic bias. I would like to promote the use of scholarly/peer-reviewed articles and books from reputable publishers [struggling with this and not being able to afford access to MUSE / JSTOR] nonetheless remaining concerned that so few are available. Gnixon - I've become increasingly flabbergasted over the last month or so by the level of systemic bias present in articles related to the creation-evolution controversy, such as Intelligent design and Level of support for evolution, where anti-creationist policing by a tight-knit group of editors vastly overcompensates for the occasional bit of creationist vandalism, maintaining an atmosphere of hostility toward creationists on the talk page along with a blatant bias in the article. More recently, I've noticed that the problem seems common to all controversial topics, e.g., Abortion. Promoting neutrality on those articles' talk pages in a civil manner has roused so much hostility that I've been stalked to totally unrelated pages and had good faith edits repeatedly reverted. I think this is a very serious problem for Wikipedia.

The religion articles on here are very uneven in quality, some, such as many on Hinduism, having the quality of essays, and many on Judaism and Christianity being invariably critical and exclusive of religious scholarship, giving rise to a systemic bias in that regard (that Wikipedia is strongly biased towards 18-24 year old male graduate students - look at that cohort in studies on prevalence of religion - explains much). To balance out where I can, with what I know (I am no scholar of Hinduism or Buddhism beyond undergraduate studies in comparative religions, but do know Judaism, Christianity [as a seminarian], and Islam). Philosophy. Wikipedia is incredibly biased towards modern analytic Western philosophy; forget about Eastern, the coverage for pre-Cartesian philosophy or continental philosophy ranges from non-existent to, "look how smart this guy is, almost as much as Wittgenstein or AJ Ayers!"

I would like to help wiki become less hostile to us, women, and other groups experiencing hostility from a site that has a strong urge to exclude and harrass us. A lot of people part of this page don't seem to understand that systemic bias does not have to do with NPOV or a resistance to science. It has to do with racism, sexism, etc. As it says in the wikiproject page this is about biases "that naturally grows from its contributors' demographic groups" meaning wikipedia is filled with white, male, wealthy editors that went through western education. It has almost nothing to do with NPOV except in where there is systemic bias, of which there is almost none against the scientific fields, except when it serves to uphold racist systems against POC and sexist systems against women and trans people.

My particular interest is in Cambodia and I find that somewhat neglected historical articles - like Chenla I or Chenla II - these have been written based entirely on US government sources in the public domain. Given how little the US knew about what was going on in the countryside at the time, and domestic opposition to the war in IndoChina - It's no wonder these original sources emphasised NVA involvement (to the exclusion of Cambodian communists) in these two battles (end rant!). I'm interested in everything, but I've sort of adopted Clown and related articles, since I have worked with and booked clown acts for over 20 years, and have taught clowning to several professional clowns. I think that 'things that aren't on the web' are in desperate need of being added to Wikipedia. I'd like to see some of the idiomatic English reworded to be more globally understandable by people for whom english is not their native tongue. I also edit a lot on legal issues (I read "legalese" and am fairly good at translating it to readable English), human rights issues, environmental protection and anti-pollution issues. Many articles are neglected, and many topics are forgone, because their subjects are deemed embarrassing, in connection with being perceived as unimportant, frivolous or puerile, which ultimately either prevents Wikipedia from having a decent coverage of the topics or allows for the existing articles on this type of topic to degenerate into something that is not encyclopedic. Research on the topics is usually relativelly easy (although severe filtering may be required in order to maintain an encyclopedic level), but the more skilled users will not touch them, unless their intervention is motivated by the need to resolve revert/content conflict or technical issues (too many redirects, unsuitable language, etc.). So I make it my business to include some of the topics that are left out unjustly and, once the topic is in, I strive to keep it within encyclopedic standards. As examples, I have created many articles related to tv shows and worked hard on some of them and others that I did not create myself to maintain the Wikistandard.

Concerns include "funding bias" in evidence supporting Western medicine, "medical error" bias in that 250,000 deaths per yer (US) are ignored -- yet non-Western medicine is attackde by skeptics.

Unfortunately there is a bias in the English WP and there're groups of editors, wikilawyering or edit warring to keep anyone away from changing the bias. WookieInHeat - ironically even the countering systemic bias project suffers from the very symptoms it seeks to cure. of all the people in this list who identify bias in arab-israeli conflict related topics as their reason for participation, only Zakouma correctly identifies bias from both sides of the dispute as an issue. although this is not my primary area of participation by any means, i do try to keep an eye on it when i can.

I find there seems to a large bias towards the English speaking nations on the English wiki; natural I suppose but still in the pursuit of truth and knowledge it'd be better for everyone if there wasn't any.

English speaking Wikipedians are limited to sources which are rarely neutral on the matter of Cuba.
