Q221 edit

In 1910, 2 Carlton players were suspended for 5 years for match fixing. Who were they? Moondyne 02:30, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That would be Bongo Lang and Doug Fraser. --Roisterer (talk) 23:48, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And you would be right. Your go. Moondyne 13:55, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Answer: Doug Fraser and Bribery Scandal

Q222 edit

I was just wondering who the damn fool was who hadn't asked the next question and realised it was me.

When I was in high school, a new student from Western Australia claimed his favourite player was a chap who I'd never heard of, had never played VFL/AFL but had a name which made me think that a famous musician had taken up football. Who was he? --Roisterer (talk) 00:24, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know nothing of Western Australian footballers but I will guess Michael Jackson. --TheGrantley (talk) 02:02, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No. The footballer in question has his own wikipedia page and he was playing in the 80s. --Roisterer (talk) 03:07, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see the erstwhile lead singer of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jon Fogarty (footballer), also played with disctinction for Swan Districts. --TheGrantley (talk) 22:07, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes he did, and you are right. According to the student Fogarty was one of the most skilful players going around Western Australian football in the early 80s. --Roisterer (talk) 02:40, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q223 edit

I thought an Olympics-related question was appropriate: Which Olympian was a VFL/AFL draftee? --TheGrantley (talk) 22:14, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, got it - watching the rowing finals last night the commentator mentioned that McKenzie-McHarg had been drafted by the Bulldogs. Maybe they could have done with him last night? Jonesy (talk) 02:05, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, it seems there are at least two Olympian VFL/AFL Draftees. I was thinking Shayne Bennett (Collingwood draftee, 2000 Olympian in baseball) but I'll give you the nod for McKenzie-McHarg. --TheGrantley (talk) 22:40, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q224 edit

What does this list represent: 45, 44, 41, 41, 40, 40, 39, 39, 39, 38? Jonesy (talk) 09:31, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would it have anything to do with the number of players on a particular club's list over a number of years? --Roisterer (talk) 10:38, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, that's not it. Jonesy (talk) 10:40, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, time for a hint perhaps. The first number on the list relates to a game in which the Hawthorn captain at the time was deeply concerned about the weather conditions. Jonesy (talk) 00:23, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, could it be a list of the largest margins at three quarter times where a side has gone on to lose? --Roisterer (talk) 03:16, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's the answer I was after. I seem to remember The Chief taking Hawthorn into the shade at 3/4 time on a particularly hot Brisbane afternoon, while leading by 45 points at 3/4 time, in an attempt to conserve energy, only for the Hawks to be overrun by the (at the time) Brisbane Bears. Jonesy (talk) 03:34, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q225 edit

Now, I can't be 100% sure but I would suggest that only one former VFL/AFL player has played in the Golden Gate Australian Football League. Who could it be? --Roisterer (talk) 05:47, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I actually didn't even have to google for this, as I knew he'd moved to California but didn't know which bit, but John Ironmonger would be your man. The-Pope (talk) 06:14, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, indeedy. Surely one of the scarier looking footballers I have ever seen. --Roisterer (talk) 23:40, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q226 edit

Triple doubles are fairly common in the AFL, but using the standard set of stats of kicks, handballs, marks, hitouts, tackles, frees, goals & behinds (but not total disposals), who is the only guy to get a quadruple double in 2008? The-Pope (talk) 15:44, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Um, I'm not quite sure what you mean. --Roisterer (talk) 23:19, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Who was the only player this year to get more than 10 in 4 of the above listed stats categories. Ie 20 kicks, 10 handballs and 14 marks would be a triple-double. Only once this year has someone added a 4th stat in double figures to make a Quadruple-double. Who did it?The-Pope (talk) 00:10, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Lance Franklin? --Roisterer (talk) 02:10, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Matthew Pavlich? Moondyne 02:14, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Jonathan Brown? --TheGrantley (talk) 02:16, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What about the Richo Man? Jonesy (talk) 04:11, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Surely one of us has to be right.--Roisterer (talk) 04:23, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope... but it is a big guy. AQuick scan of the stats today shows that about 6 or 7 guys got triple doubles - Swan, Tuck, Montagna, Goddard, Stevens etc, but no quadruple doubles.The-Pope (talk) 05:09, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If I'm reading the question correctly, it looks like Jeff White has acheived a quadruple double twice this season. According to the AFL Tables website, against Geelong in round 3 he had 10 kicks, 10 marks, 15 handballs and 10 hit outs and against Freo in round 7 he had 11 kicks, 10 marks, 11 handballs and 10 hit outs. Maybe he would be a good pick up for the Blues? Jonesy (talk) 06:06, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't I feel like The Dope, not The Pope. When I did the filter on the spreadsheet, I did ">10", not ">=10". So Big Dean Cox is the only guy to have a quadruple 11 or more, but White twice, Hille, Jolly and Symmonds all have quad-doubles using hitouts, and Scott Thompson the crow has one vs the Eagles with 10 tackles. Over to you Jonesy.The-Pope (talk) 12:46, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q226 edit

What is the significance of the following score: 25.13 (163)? Jonesy (talk) 10:52, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Highest losing score in a VFL/AFL match? --TheGrantley (talk) 03:32, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly on the money The Grantley. Geelong kicked 25.13 in the round 6 game in 1989, only to be outscored by the Hawks who kicked 26.15 (171). Buckenara and Dermie kicked 5 each for the Hawks and Gavin Exell booted 9 for the Cats. Jonesy (talk) 03:49, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q227 edit

Name the 1990s AFL player who wore a white hair band (possibly called an alice band) while playing. --TheGrantley (talk) 03:55, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't be Todd Viney would it? Jonesy (talk) 04:17, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not the bloke I was thinking of. Can I say that he played for Sydney? --TheGrantley (talk) 06:10, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Aah, that would be Nettlebeck of the Craig variety (didn't he play for Melbourne also? Interestingly he doesn't have a Wikipedia page Jonesy (talk) 06:48, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Weird, I was just on Facebook, looking at the Friends list of another friend and saw the name Craig Nettelbeck and realised he was the answer to this question.--Roisterer (talk) 02:27, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Craig Nettelbeck is the answer. I'm surprised he doesn't have an article as well. He was engaged to a tv vet at one stage and there was a high profile court case he was involved in as well, IIRC.
He'd have an article if he didn't have a car accident on the way to the footy the week he was meant to make his debut for Freo (as I've finished off the list for every player who's played for Freo earlier this year). Can't find a reliable source for that story though... so it could just be an urban myth, but I'm pretty sure it's true. The-Pope (talk) 12:24, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q228 edit

The commentators on one of the games over the weekend were talking about Peter Everitt having one of the worst win/loss records as a player in VFL/AFL history. They also said that he held another (unwanted) record. Can you tell me what that record is? Jonesy (talk) 23:53, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is it most number of VFL/AFL games without a premiership? --Roisterer (talk) 04:38, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, that's not it. There are a few players ahead of Spida on that list. Jonesy (talk) 05:34, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
According to the article on him, he "is a strange looking man". I don't suppose that is related? --TheGrantley (talk) 00:04, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not what I was thinking of. This record relates to the instability of at least one club that Spida has played for. Jonesy (talk) 22:50, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Aah, most number of coaches? --Roisterer (talk) 02:04, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Roisterer is correct. Spida has played under 9 different coaches throughout his career according to the commentators on the Ten Network. Jonesy (talk) 08:01, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bizarre record. I did think Trevor Barker would have had the record but a quick count shows him with eight. Onwards to the next question... --Roisterer (talk) 09:42, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q229 edit

The brother of which former AFL player worked as Elle McPherson's PA? Extra marks if you can name the PA, who also spent time on an AFL list. --Roisterer (talk) 09:46, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Any chance of a hint Roisterer? It's been a few days with no responses. Jonesy (talk) 01:11, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Anything to do with Brady Anderson, Sandover medallist, who was her personal trainer? I'm not sure he has a brother though. Moondyne 01:29, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not, Brady Anderson, although one has to wonder what Elle McPherson was doing hiring so many footballers. The former player turned out for three different AFL teams and was listed on a fourth (along with said brother). --Roisterer (talk) 02:00, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For some reason Adrian Fletcher comes to mind. --TheGrantley (talk) 02:07, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
He shouldn't. For all I know Elle also has Fletcher on the books but the one I am thinking of comes from Adelaide, although none of the three teams he played for are from SA. --Roisterer (talk) 03:49, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
SHayne Clayton? Jonesy (talk) 10:20, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not the Claytons either. To recap, the former AFL player played over 100 AFL games, mainly as a forward, turns thirty in a few weeks and, according to the wikipedia article on him, makes his money through the internet. His twin brother, meanwhile, is Elle McPherson's PA. --Roisterer (talk) 01:39, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
An extensive search comes up with Kent Kingsley, whose brother Wade Kingsley seems to fit your question. --TheGrantley (talk) 10:07, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Interestingly the 7 network showed Kingsley on the coverage tonight sitting next to Jimmy Bartel. A kid asked for his ((Kingsley's) autograph and ignored Bartel. Maybe he was after Elle's phone number? Jonesy (talk) 12:17, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wade Kingsley, Kent's twin, is/was Elle's PA. Apparently he travelled the world with her, organising her appointments. Somehow he thought that a better job option than playing SANFL football. --Roisterer (talk) 13:34, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q230 edit

Who was the first Queenslander to play a senior game for the Brisbane Bears? --TheGrantley (talk) 00:36, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scott McIvor? Jonesy (talk) 00:46, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
McIvor didn't play for Brisbane until `88. The player in question was an original Bear, playing a few games in `87. --TheGrantley (talk) 22:14, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm at work so I don't have access to any Bears playing lists but it's a common name like Tony Brown (Tony Lynn?) --Roisterer (talk) 00:00, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Tony, yes but neither of the surnames you suggest. --TheGrantley (talk) 05:57, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Must be Tony Beckett. Sorry to steal Roisterer's thunder. Jonesy (talk) 06:59, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That was exactly who I was thinking of. --Roisterer (talk) 23:11, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Beckett is da man. Sorry, I've been away from an Internet connection in the badlands of Wagga these last few days and haven't been able to post. Massively off topic, I learnt that the Bee Gees wrote the song "In the Morning" in Wagga, so the trip wasn't a complete waste. --TheGrantley (talk) 22:26, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q231 edit

As a Carlton fan living in Sydney I remember an incident in the mid to late 80s at the SCG. A Carlton player was running with the ball down the wing in front of the Brewongle stand, only to be 'tackled' by a Swans player by the hair. Much to my dismay the Swans player was awarded a free kick for holding the ball. Can anyone tell me the players involved? Jonesy (talk) 23:11, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tommy Alvin tackled by Tony Morwood. --Roisterer (talk) 08:58, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bravo Roisterer. Alvin and Morwood it was. As a budding young player for the Bauklham Hills Hawks under 16s, Tom Alvin was my favourite player. I couldn't believe it when he got done for holding the ball in that tackle. Jonesy (talk) 09:08, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q232 edit

Apologies for the time taken to post the question. I have just had a massive mental block. Anyway, here's a difficult one: After the completion of Round 7, 1987, who was the VFL Leading Goalkicker for that season? --Roisterer (talk) 11:26, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can work out it's Doug Barwick on 35, ahead of Plugger on 33. Barwick's form must have dropped off after that because he finished the season on 47 and Plugger went on to kick 117.Jonesy (talk) 12:00, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Jesus, I thought that question would run for a few days at least. Yes, Dougie Barwick was the surprise leader at that point of the season. --Roisterer (talk) 23:38, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had a bit of spare time during the Brownlow telecast last night with all the waffling going on so I put my research skills to the test. Am at work now - will post Q233 from home tonight (I have one in mind but I want to check the details first). Jonesy (talk) 00:01, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q233 edit

There is no doubt Geelong have had a wonderful 2008 season but they I believe they may have equalled an unwanted record this year. Can anyone tell me what record I am thinking of? Jonesy (talk) 23:15, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Highest average losing margin for a season - 86 points.The-Pope (talk) 00:21, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The Pope has it. Not sure who they equalled but it was a good effort on their behalf. Will have to dig deeper and hope my next question lasts a bit longer. Jonesy (talk) 00:31, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q234 edit

Freo polled 23 Brownlow votes this year from games which they lost. Which team and when was the last team to poll more than 23 votes in losing games in a year? The-Pope (talk) 16:22, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

At a wild guess, St Kilda in 1987? --Roisterer (talk) 09:06, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Forgot it was my question! A bit more recent and optimistic than the Saints of the late 80sThe-Pope (talk) 00:08, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fremantle, 1995? --TheGrantley (talk) 01:03, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hawthorn, 1999? --Roisterer (talk) 10:51, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, it really is the off-season! More recent than all of these guesses. Roisterer has the team correct (hence my optimistic clue) The-Pope (talk) 00:30, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It wasn't Hawthorn of 2007 vintage? --Roisterer (talk) 09:00, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Or the 2006 Hawks? --TheGrantley (talk) 23:05, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Getting closer. This team got the perfect 30 votes from their 5 wins for the season, but 31 votes from their 17 losses. The-Pope (talk) 00:16, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the Hawks won 5 games in 2005...--Roisterer (talk) 02:55, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q235 edit

As Q234 has already become knownb as "The Never Ending Question", I thought I would throw caution into the wind, presume I answered it correctly and ask Q235. If I'm wrong, then a) God strike me down, and b) keep going with Q234.

Anyhoo, I recently puchased a copy of a 1977 book on "The Best Fifty Footballers of the past Fifty Years". Who managed to sneak in as the 50th best player of the years 1927-1977? --Roisterer (talk) 01:36, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Carji Greeves? --TheGrantley (talk) 00:54, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Out of curiosity, who does the book say is the best? Moondyne 01:46, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You did get Q234 correct... sorry about the length of time it took. Kevin Bartlett is my guess, and without some luck, clues or a search through every 2nd-hand bookshop in the country, this Q might last as long as the last one!The-Pope (talk) 08:16, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Lethal Leigh? Jonesy (talk) 08:51, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, firstly it's not Greeves, who I think was somewhere in the 30s (I don't have the book in front of me). The book has Teddy Whitten at number 1, doesn't mention Lethal at all ('77

no doubt too early to include him in such a list and has KB, but slightly higher than 50. The no. 50 has become more famous off the field than on. --Roisterer (talk) 01:18, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Surely not Sam Newman? Would love to see the top 10. Who wrote it?The-Pope (talk) 02:24, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What about Lou Richards? Jonesy (talk) 02:40, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good guess with Lou, who indeed snuck into the top 50. When I get home tonight I'll post the top ten. I don't necessarily agree with the selections, particularly the fact they excluded any non-VFL players, so eg. Bob Quinn (Australian footballer) missed a guernsey even though he was an All-Australian captain. --Roisterer (talk) 03:18, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, what a lucky guess, would never have got it without the clue. Will think of a new Q and post from home this evening. Jonesy (talk) 03:34, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm back home and have the book Football's 50 Greatest (in the past 50 years) by Greg Hobbs and Scotty Palmer in front of me so I can authoritatively state that the top 10 was: 1. Ted Whitten, 2. Polly Farmer, 3. John Coleman, 4. Dick Reynolds, 5. Haydn Bunton, 6. Jezza, 7. Jack Mueller, 8. Ian Stewart, 9. Laurie Nash & 10. Darel Baldock. Barassi was 11, Skilton 12, Dyer 21, KB 33, Carji Greeves, 37, Brian Dixon 49 & Lou 50. The only South Australian to make it was (at first glance) Bernie Smith. The Port Adelaide in me suggests that Bob Quinn and Fos Williams, at the very least, should have been included, and I'm sure other non-VFL clubs could make similar claims. --Roisterer (talk) 10:29, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q236 edit

Doug Hawkins and Kevin Murray are the only two players to have done what? Jonesy (talk) 09:49, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Played in over 200 losing games? The-Pope (talk) 11:46, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Correct, Murray and Dougie top that particular list. A couple of recently retited players (Harvey, Everitt, West and Neitz are in the top 20 or so. Jonesy (talk) 11:58, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q237 edit

Which list is topped by Robbie Flower, Matthew Lappin, John Dugdale & John Murphy(in that order)?The-Pope (talk) 14:16, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most number of free kicks during their career? --TheGrantley (talk) 11:37, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Or free kicks given away? --Roisterer (talk) 02:31, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most goals from free kicks

I really should try to remember when it's my question. Nothing to do with

free kicks, as detailed stats like that weren't always around back in the 60s/70s/80s. It's a "most games with a certain provision/qualification" type of record.The-Pope (talk) 00:54, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most games where they kicked a goal in a winning side (or am I getting to specific here). --Roisterer (talk) 09:40, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Most number of games before they played a final? --TheGrantley (talk) 02:23, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't you think a Plugger/Ablett/Dunstall/Coventry would hold almost all goal related records? And Lappin played in the Saints 97 GF in only his 4th season, so many have many more than that. I found this stat whilst researching the answer to the previous question (ie it's sort of related).The-Pope (talk) 14:23, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Most number of losses before playing in a winning team? --Roisterer (talk) 00:24, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Flower played in 2 wins in his first 2 games, so it isn't that. It is something to do with wins. The-Pope (talk) 14:09, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm really just wildly guessing here but most number of wins by a player that didn't play in a premiershhip? --Roisterer (talk) 04:06, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Most games by a player with less than 100 wins? Jevansen (talk) 06:06, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And the month long question comes to an end. Well done Jeva. I've been a bit busy with the new draftees AFDs lately to remember the quiz. The-Pope (talk) 07:16, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have to say I'm pleased to see the end of that question. --Roisterer (talk) 10:33, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q238 edit

Very much doubt this question will take over a month. Who is the only person to have captained a premiership team and also umpired in a VFL/AFL Grand Final? Jevansen (talk) 12:28, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lawrence Tulloch? --TheGrantley (talk) 07:04, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Correct! He captained Collingwood's 1902 and 1903 premierships and umpired the 1907 GF. Jevansen (talk) 23:37, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q239 edit

According to the disambiguation page, which former VFL/AFL player shares his name with, amongst others, an American composer, an English professional golfer and an Australian broadcaster. --TheGrantley (talk) 01:00, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For a clue, the player in question played for two different VFL/AFL clubs and had a well-known nickname. --TheGrantley (talk) 12:47, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Think I've got it - Michael 'Magic' McLean? Jonesy (talk) 23:28, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You have got it! The answer is also correct. Your go. --TheGrantley (talk) 10:50, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q240 edit

Sorry I took so long to get around to this question and I'm going to take you back to the 80s....

Who played the role of Tank O'Donohue in The Club? Jonesy (talk) 09:18, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Only one man could have played Tank O'Donoghue; Rene Kink. --Roisterer (talk) 09:31, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, a grand total of 13 minutes. The former hairdresser and five-time losing Grand Finallist it is. I managed to catch the movie late one night last week on pay TV. Daics appeared (as himself) and Ronnie Wearmouth and Peter Moore also featured. Over to The Roisterer. Jonesy (talk) 09:39, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
