Scope and Mission of WikiProject United States Welcome to WikiProject United States on the English Wikipedia! We are a project dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the United States, with an emphasis on subjects with regional and national significance. This project was formed to coordinate the development of United States related articles and help maintain the United States Portal. Some project goals are to help list and categorize United States related articles, develop quality standards for articles and build templates that help users browse the articles that fall under this project. This project also provides a place for Wikipedians to share information and resources regarding improvements to United States related articles. Here, editors can ask for help with certain articles and bring otherwise overlooked articles and problems, to the attention of other editors. Project news Since the last newsletter was sent there have been a number of significant discussions and events that pertained to the project and United States related articles in general. WikiProject American television has joined the family of WikiProjects that have agreed to share {{WikiProject United States}}. This project was started to improve Wikipedia's coverage of American television and the articles relating to that topic. If you are interested the project could use your help. There is an active discussion on the talk pages of WikiProject United States and WikiProject Government about the inactive project WikiProject United States Government being added to the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. With the recent release of the 2010 US Census there have been multiple active conversations about how to update all the articles affected. If you have any ideas or want to help in this effort please leave your comments on the WikiProject United States talk page. The tagging of articles continues and we have added several thousand articles to the count since the last newsletter. We still have approximately 1300 articles in the project that need to be assessed so any help you can provide with assessments is greatly appreciated. Even 1 or 2 a day would be a big help. A bot request was submitted to tag the remaining 500 pages of Portal United States with the United States banner. The project already has over 1700 of the portal pages tagged so this would be just to finish off the remaining ones.
Portal Thanks to RichardF and a few others the United States portal is getting ever closer to achieving Featured portal status. The portal needs your help in filling in the Anniversaries (formerly known as On this day). Any help you can provide to help fill these dates in would be greatly appreciated. If you have any ideas or comments about the portal please feel free to leave them here.
Collaboration The collaboration for April 2011 is Chesapeake Bay The monthly collaboration is now in its third month since reactivation. The first article Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was improved significantly in February, as was George Washington (the second one) in March. Although the latter article was not nominated for GA, enough work was done for contributors to identify remaining content areas needing improving before an attempt is made, which is great progress. Thus anyone keen on reading up on Washington's role in the American Revolution and the presidency is most welcome to review and contribute. Magicpiano (talk · contribs) is planning on buffing material for the American Revolution segment by focussing on the daughter article, George Washington in the American Revolution first. Anyway, Chesapeake Bay is the new collaboration picked for April and anyone is welcome to work on it. For choosing new candidate articles for May and beyond, editors should think about articles which have a range of issues that a variety of editors can help with, from content (primary school to university level research) to copyediting. Having a look over current and past ideas (which can be seen here and here (even older ones). So folks have a think about which articles are in most in need of fixing, or alternately, have a clear pathway to GA or FA status.

Referencing Census 2010

I thought I knew how to reference Census 2010 population numbers but when I clicked on the link it didn't reproduce the Census table where I obtained the information. To find 2010 Census population numbers, I went to http://factfinder2.census.gov
Then, using the Quick Start section in the middle of the page, type "redistricting" in the "topic box" - from the drop-down list that appears, choose "2010 Redistricting Data SF (PL94-171)" In the "geography box", type your city or countys' name *make sure you have the right state!* - then click "go." From the list of results, check the box next to "Race, Hispanic or Latino, Age, and Housing Occupancy -- 2010 Redistricting Data SF (PL94-171)" *Make sure you have 2010 - not 2000!* Above the results list, click "View."
This goes to a website with http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?fpt=table but you cannot use this as a reference. This is the only way I've found to view 2010 Census Population numbers so far. Has anyone found a referenceable page for the 2010 Census yet? --Mjrmtg (talk) 14:20, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Collaboration

Hmmmm...Chesapeake Bay stalled a bit, meant to do more but I got distracted elsewhere. Anyway, we also have a tiebreaker for the next collaboration - I guess options are:

1. . leave Chesapeake Bay open until it gets to GA
2. . accept that it didn't capture the interest of folks and sling up the next but we have a tiebreaker, so shall we leave it open for 48 hours starting now until we get some more votes? Casliber (talk · contribs) 23:37, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Oftentimes on collaboration projects, folks stay around to keep buffing the former collaboration to give it a big shove to GA or FA. If you do get the books, I will knuckle down and do what I can to get it over one of those lines as I have a bit of experience at these things....(i.e. I think we can get it there, but am not familiar with some of the core content) Casliber (talk · contribs) 00:49, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

The WikiProject National Archives Newsletter July 2011 News Featured article contest This week, our first multilingual featured article contest was announced. We are aiming to improve the articles on the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, or Bill of Rights to featured or good status in English and other languages. Prizes for winners will be a gift package from the National Archives including a book of your choice or a tote bag, and other swag, plus, of course, a special barnstar. August 6 backstage pass Plans are in the works for a meetup and backstage pass event at the National Archives II facility in College Park, MD. There will be a regular social meetup, a discussion with Dominic about WP:NARA, a tour of the building by NARA staff, and then time for a scanathon and editathon in the research rooms and library until the building closes at 5 pm. Special requests: This section includes special requests from the NARA staff: Archival Recovery Team The National Archives' Archival Recovery Team (ART) is a team of law enforcement agents and archivists who investigate NARA's lost and stolen documents. They have received media attention ([1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]) and would like to request an article be written for the team, if Wikipedians deem it notable. It is hoped that making more information about the group available on Wikipedia will increase public awareness of the documents they are seeking to recover. Ongoing Today's Document challenge The Today's Document challenge is an opportunity for Wikipedians to get their work related to National Archives holdings spotlighted on Archives.gov and the National Archives' tumblr. Each day the National Archives selects a document related to the day's date to showcase. The goal is to get articles related to the selected documents on the main page in ""Did You Know...?" the same day that the National Archives features the document. Alternatively, other appropriate articles related to National Archives holdings not already selected will be used for new documents of the day by NARA staff and posted to their tumblr. Wikisource WP:NARA has a sister WikiProject on Wikisource, WS:NARA. On Wikisource, editors transcribe, proofread, and arrange documents. This helps to make little-known documents more discoverable, or well-known documents more searchable, and improves accessibility. See the files being worked on. If you are new to Wikisource and would like to participate, there are experienced Wikisourcerors willing to be mentors. We are working on a bulk upload to Commons of one particular cache of about 123,000 TIFF master files in the next few days! Once uploaded, these will require a massive community effort to help categorize the files on Commons and add them to articles on Wikipedia or transcribe them on Wikisource. Inclusion in the online catalog We are currently working on a system for including links to pages on Wikimedia projects in the National Archives online catalog. The Wikimedia projects are hosting an increasing number of transcriptions of National Archives documents and high-quality image and video files that are not available through NARA's own site. Links to these Wikimedia pages in the documents' actual catalog records will benefit the end user by providing them access to further resources about the documents, and they will also demonstrate the National Archives commitment to supporting Wikimedians' efforts. 2010 Census

The 2010 census data are all available now. Are there any plans for an automated or systematic update to U.S. place articles containing census data? As it currently stands, changes are being made willy-nilly. Sometimes editors change the overall census figure in one place in the article, but not in others. Sometimes they change the overall census, but leave the figures from 2000 for subgroups. This is a recipe for disaster. Admittedly, I'm not a member of this project and haven't kept track of its workings, so there may be something in the works regarding this. I guess I just want to know if there are any plans for systematically updating census figures before I jump into making changes myself. 75.13.68.39 (talk) 17:21, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

99 Percent Declaration

I recently created the 99 Percent Declaration article, and now it's been nominated for deletion and rescue. I have lots of possible sources on the talk page, but I would feel more comfortable if there were other editors. Would you please help improve it? New Navbox for elections by year

The pages Category:United States mayoral elections, 2012 and Category:Alaska elections, 2010 have a new navbox (not by me) to readily navigate to adjacent years. It is not specific to the United States or elections, and is similar to the navbox for Category:Terrorist incidents in India in 2010. Note that the Alaskan box is set to “2” to show even years only. While the majority of American elections are in even years, it may be advisable to set it to “1” to include every year, but displaying many redlinks for odd years without elections (the majority). Bell and Lights Air Raid Warning System (1953)

I would like someone to write an article about the above subject. This was a national system developed by A.T.& T. which gave red, yellow, blue, and white alerts over special dedicated telephone circuits which had "bell and lights" annunciators in schools, hospitals, fire stations, and police stations. Searches turn up references to the system but no actual articles about it. submitted 22 March 2012.
