Compliance These are a group of interlinked mirror sites. The owner claims the duplication is for "load balancing". On all the sites I checked, there is a link to internal GFDL, the original article, and the original history, below the last ads. The sites use dynamic loading (the owner claims he has set up 1 year caching), and hotlink images. There is no mention of CC-BY-SA. Many registrations use whois cloaking services.

NOTE - someone needs to finish the final step for this domain (the DMCA takedown notice). The reason is: this fork is very old and I am a fairly new editor so none of the material on the fork infringes on any of my copyrights. An older editor needs to look through their old (2005?) original contributions and find it on this site before a takedown notice could be sent. ~a (usertalkcontribs) 13:55, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Arkansas Encyclopedia edit

  • I didn't see this listed anywhere. It strikes me as very odd. I initially came accross this through a Google hit that led me to this http://lakewoodrepublicans.8m.com/michigan.html. They do state that the text content is GFDL ("All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License."), but there is no link to the license and no link back to Wikipedia and no history. What is really odd though, is that it looks as though the content is actually spread across various domains. For example this entry on Germany: http://beerot.itgo.com/germany.html (which does not even mention GFDL anywhere). Or the "main" page: http://www.geocities.com/arkencyclo/. Seems like every click is a different domain. Bkonrad | Talk 14:14, 13 Mar 2004 (UTC)
The pictures of the article Michigan are not hosted by them but directly form Wikipedia. That is not a nice thing to do. Walter 09:11, 15 Apr 2004 (UTC)
I just examined this site and they're no longer stealing bandwidth, and are now linking the article. I'd move them to high degree. Derrick Coetzee 13:03, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

      • On further inspection, they hide the notice. You can view through clicking Notice+. I am moving to medium.
    • How can this be even considered medium compliance? I clicked on the Notice+, and get this:
This article is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License. It uses material from Wikipedia: Wiki entry.
When I click on Wiki entry I get http://www.articleshead.com/#, and not a link back to the original article. When I click on the GNU FDL link I get the page from http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html . But there is no mention of the GFDL or the correct copyright notice unless I click on Notice+, surely this is non-compliance? -Wikibob | Talk 17:48, 2005 May 22 (UTC)

Sample http://www.cassiopedia.org/wiki/index.php?title=Manchester_City_F.C. — see how this page (created on 09/2006) compares with the wikipedia version of the page on the same date: [8]
Rating "Low/None"
Compliance Site has now removed all Wikipedia content and references to the project. The site appears to be essentially a wikipedia fork, but claims that "This site is NOT affiliated in any way with Wikipedia or any of its sister sites" at [9]. Mentions GFDL but has the audacity to assert (e.g., in the sample link above) that "An uncorrected copy of this article might be available at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_City_F.C.", implying that cassiopedia.org is the originator of the content rather than the other way around. The edit history of most of their articles mirrors only the most recent edit in the history of the Wikipedia article at the time of capture, (usually September 2006). In the example above the edit histories of both the Wikipedia article and the Cassiopedia article show AntiVandalBot as the contributor of the article version (including identical edit summaries). They further have the audacity on their copied copyright problems page to assert that their designated agent is Jimmy Wales!

They also appear to be modifying the pages to substitute "Wikipedia" with their encyclopedia:

Below moved from main page... Davelane 21:39, 17 Sep 2004 (UTC)

The site http://www.eurofreehost.com/ appears to be a mirror of Wikipedia; each page claims to be under the GFDL but I found no link to Wikipedia on either a random article (http://www.eurofreehost.com/co/Compulsator.html) or the main page. Also, no Wiki source seems to be available, specifically violating the intent of the GFDL as I see it. Finally, the pages have no link to the text of the GFDL. I've sent a more-or-less standard complaint letter (although I didn't claim to be delighted to see another out-of-date broken mirror of Wikipedia) but it was taken before I made any major contributions, so if someone with more seniority would like to take over, that'd be great. Phatnav's pages still claim copyright. Straight mirror of WP content. Makes near fraudulent claims (they copy some of our pages that say "content provided by visitors to this site", further implying content is theirs). I can still see no GFDL or WP links, pages imply they are owned by PhatNav.

This is just about the worst possible violation (straight copy / adding ads / claiming copyright / not crediting authors) and given that they have not responded to previous letters, I propose we escalate according to standard protocol (please drop me a line if you want to work with me on this one). Mat-C 20:41, 30 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Violation still going stong. <quote>PhatNav's Encyclopedia - A "Wikipedia"</quote> sounds like trademark dilution to me. --Spikey 21:28, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Appears to be compliant now. "A Wikipedia" no longer displayed, and although it's in VERY tiny print, at the very bottom of each page they say "The Wikipedia is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. It is offered as open source and is free to reuse according to the GNU Free documentation License. The original version of this page can be found at http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/<ARTICLENAME>." Their copyright notice states "All content Copyright 2003 - PhatNav and Diagonal Media Group Inc. (Except as noted on pages containing separately licensed content.) All rights reserved." Compliance Bottom of each page from Wikipedia states "The Wikipedia is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. It is offered as open source and is free to reuse according to the GNU Free documentation License." At the bottom of the page, there is a link to the original article in fine print. It does not explicitly say that the displayed article is under the GFDL, which is wrong. They link to our GFDL article, not the text and not on their own site. There is also no mention of the GFDL or Wikipedia on the printable version.

Compliance The engine displays parts of Wikipedia articles above related searches. While there is no link to the associated article, there are links to other searches. Thus, it is possible to surf the previews without even knowing there is a larger article or where the text comes from. The engine claims copyright. However, there is a vague notice that "Portions of these search results are used under the GNU Free Documentation License. You may redistribute it, verbatim or modified, providing that you comply with the terms of the GFDL."; there is no way to tell what "portions" are being referred to. The notice has an offsite link to the GFDL and there is neither an article history nor a link to the original article.

Quickseek.com edit

Uses subdomains to incompetently mirror Wikipedia articles without rendering the markup. Quickseek copyright notice, no Wikipedia or GFDL mention. Appears to be intended as search engine spam.

Examples:

update: They appear to be a live leech, delayed a few minutes. Replaces all mention of ‘Wikipedia’ with ‘QuickSeek Encyclopedia’. They copy the Wikipedia: namespace, but not the User:. Low compliance. Chris Chan {t|c} 12:20, 29 April 2006 (UTC) update²: They appear to be running Mediawiki, and be editable. However, there is no easily accessible edit link, and they are not a live leech. They appear to be using a copy of all articles from 15 Feb 2006. Still low-compliance. Chris Chan {t|c} 12:28, 29 April 2006 (UTC) update: They have a "Wikipedia" phrase in black on their main page, but no link, and not the Wikipedia logo. They also claim to be associated with the Columbia University Press. User:Zoe|(talk) 21:47, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I came across this "mirror" when checking to see if an article was a copyvio. To date, the issue has not been addressed and the sites Terms & Conditions state:

You agree that you are only authorized to visit, view, and retain a copy of pages of this Site for your own personal use, and that you shall not duplicate, download, publish, modify, or otherwise distribute the material on this Site for any commercial use, or for any purpose other than as described in these Terms.

You agree that you will not copy, reproduce, alter, modify, create derivative works from, or publicly display any content (except for your own personal, non-commercial use) from our Web site without the prior expressed written permission of QuickSeek.

    • I think they are. How long do they have to "address the issues" before someone else should send another warning? Ardric47 19:34, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Still live 15:00, 12 July 2006 (UTC). Found a clear violation at http://evan.quickseek.com/ as it includes the stub marker "This name-related article is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it." while working on an AFD for Evan (mythology). Their page contains "(C) 2005 QuickSeek.com All rights reserved. Evan" at the bottom. This page http://etruscanmythology.quickseek.com/ is another clear violation as it shows the interlanguage links we use but doesn't include the word Wikipedia anywhere. GRBerry 15:00, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here's some more fun: Look up Bob Dylan on both QuickSeek and Wikipedia. Same content. Now, look up Wikipedia on both. The self-referential link here is kosher, of course. However, look at the one on Quickseek: It's completely blank. Looks like there has been some half-hearted effort to scrub their site of references to Wikipedia. 66.187.233.202 19:53, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This one has come up on IRC today, but contact info is hard to get. I think more warning e-mails have been sent after thorough hunting around, but this is lower than low compliance, infact the "all rights reserved" bit puts it at just about nill, and the removal of all wikipedia references makes it lower yet. MichaelBillington 10:12, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Copyrights "are theirs" but editrights aren't. Think about it: this may be of questionable legality but it's completely editable, and not exactly a *real* encyclopedia. It ain't moderated (that's for sure), so why not get some benefit out of their wrongdoing? Based on the good-faith assumption that it's within legal limits, I'd condone mass vandalism of the site, although I probably won't be doing it myself. --Utopianfiat 18:43, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I've sent a GFDL violation notice citing Senpai as the "proof" or whatever. I'm going to wait two weeks (the 18th is an important day, so I hope I'll remember) before I notify Rackspace just in case this guy is just misled. If he doesn't respond in 2 weeks, I think it's safe to assume that even if his intents are not malicious, everyone's lives would be better without search engine spam. --Utopianfiat 19:09, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not compliant as far as I am concerned. No list of contributors, no link back to the forked article or it's history. Says "From Veropedia, based on Wikipedia". I'd be pretty pissed off if an article I'd made major contributions to ended up on the site with this level of attribution. Wikipedia doesn't own the content I write, I do, and I expect to either be credited right there or at the very least a link back to the history at Wikipedia. --kingboyk (talk) 23:42, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It mirrors everything, images, featured articles, but not discussions or users. It even has the audacity to say 'Wackipedia in other languages' at the bottom an link to wikipedia.org domains! It makes almost no effort to remove many references to Wikipedia on various pages (e.g. This is the English language Wackipedia. Wikipedias are also being written in many other languages). Wikipedia On DVD edit

Wikipedia On DVD
URL http://www.wikipediaondvd.com/nav/art/d/w.html
Description
Sample http://www.wikipediaondvd.com/nav/art/9/r.html, http://www.wikipediaondvd.com/nav/art/4/a.html
Rating Medium
Compliance A link to an off-site copy of the GFDL is included in the footer of every page. Wikipedia is mentioned as the source and is linked to, but there's one weird and IMO major problem; every single article I've checked so far links to India as the source article on Wikipedia. This is clearly a result of a bug of some sort, but the fact remains that this means there are no links you can follow to reach the proper author history of the articles (except, of course, for India). Images don't have direct links either, the reader is directed to go to Wikipedia and hunt for the image's attribution there.
Contact info http://www.wikiwix.com/?lang=en&action=contact is the listed contact URL but following it leads to a page that displays the results of a search of Wikipedia for the word "contact". Also presumably a bug of some sort.

Robot Website:

  • This site has been reviewed and tested as OK according to McAfee SiteAdvisor
  • Site advisor's profile is at [28]
  • GFDL compliance is good. They have a clear reference to contributors on a central source page.
I have changed the rating to low/medium. I have searched the site and the only reference to Wikipedia being a source is buried on this page: [29] (which I had to really search for). It may be I couldn't find it, but it wasn't listed elsewhere. For example, on [30], there is no mention of Wikipedia or GFDL (though I does give a somewhat similar license). Compliance I see no indication that they acknowledge content comes from Wikipedia. There doesn't appear to be any copyright notice or information on the site itself. Going to any non-existing page, e.g. http://zipox.com/zipox redirects to a porn solicitation page. The site also has a list of ten sites in a "Blog Roll" all of which appear to be similar non-compliant mirrors. These are http://www.redshort.com wstuff.com vsnw.com thinkdogs.com specwire.com songnhong.com vdmg.com twgold.com and somecoolsite.com .
