Uploaded by Patchouli (notify | contribs). TV screenshot being used to illustrate a person, not for identification/commentary on the broadcast BigDT 00:28, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see any problem with that. Putting Nasrullah on television is what al-Manar's all about. He's Secretary-General of their owners JiHymas@himivest.com 00:44, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, I will go farther and say that a screenshot of Nasrullah is probably the most representative image you could take from al-Manar JiHymas@himivest.com 00:53, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Being useful doesn't justify using the image. The idea behind "fair use" is that you are using somebody else's work in order to comment on that work. You use a DVD cover or screenshot from the movie in order to comment on the movie. Even if we had all of the money, resources, and time in the world, we could never generate anything that would have the same use as a screenshot from the movie. The only possible thing out there that can serve that purpose is a screenshot. On the other hand, with a media photo, we could, given sufficient time/money/resources take a photo of this person or most anything else. The fact that they were there and we were not doesn't give us the right to use their image. BigDT 01:15, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Be careful with this reasoning. While it is true that if a free alternative could be created, the image cannot be claimed fair use under Wikipedia's fair-use policy, it is not true that any image for which there is no possible free alternative automatically qualifies as fair use. DVD covers don't qualify for fair use simply because there are no possible free alternatives; rather, they qualify because it is claimed that all ten points of the Wikipedia fair-use policy are met, one of which is that no free alternatives can exist. —Bkell (talk) 06:13, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll agree as far as that goes, but use of this screenshot is the same as using a movie screenshot of the star to illustrate a review. I do not agree that that the "TV screenshot [is] being used to illustrate a person". It's being used to illustrate a standard broadcasting theme. JiHymas@himivest.com 01:45, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok ... this image is actually being used in three articles ... I think that's the source of the misunderstanding. In Hezbollah rocket campaign in the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict and 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, it's clearly just illustrating the person. If the image is not deleted, it 100% needs to be removed from those articles and the image description page needs to have a blurb on acceptable use of the image. I didn't look closely enough at Al-Manar to realize what it was. Here, the use is probably acceptable. This particular broadcast is listed as a notable broadcast for the network, so showing a screenshot for identification purposes is reasonable. I withdraw my nomination provided that it is removed from the other two articles and the description page is changed to indicate that it can only be used for purposes of identification on the al-Manar article. BigDT 01:59, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, I am not taking a view on the propriety of including the screenshot in the other two articles mentioned. JiHymas@himivest.com 04:42, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is a symbolic picture that shows the stations' main focus, its owners, and its political importance in the region. That said, it is low-resolution and does not impair their ability to sell their works. I think this is a very important illustration - just like Osama's videos on Al-Jazeera. --Mrmiscellanious 17:31, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Free" as in speech, not as in beer. If it's under a free license, such as the GFDL, then anyone can use it however they want; they don't have to ask you first, and you can't refuse permission. I would suggest that you remove the sentence "Please ask me before using" if you don't want the image to be deleted. —Bkell (talk) 16:37, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can confirm that this image is no longer required. Technically the issue was never resolved, but my new computer didn't have the problem, so I'm guessing it was just something wrong with my old computer set-up. There is also another image that I uploaded at the same time: Image:Wikipedia_links_problem.jpg. That issue was never resolved either, but similarly there is no real reason to keep the image hanging around, so that can be listed for deletion as well. If anyone is interested, the (brief) discussion on these matters will be somewhere in the history of the Village Pump technical or miscellaneous sections in around late January or early February 2006. Best to scan my contributions around that date to find the diffs I contributed about these issues. I'm actually impressed that it only took six months for these stray images to be tagged for deletion! :-) Carcharoth 13:08, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep although I don't see the point of it for the life of me. It is used on two user pages, one of which is an active contributor. We have pretty wide latitude about what we put on our user pages - there is no requirement that it be encyclopedic. Some users even have pictures of themselves on their userpage and this is permitted. We delete (in fact, for that matter, I have nominated for deletion) plenty of vanity pics, but if they are in use on a user page, they are permitted. As for the use of this image in this article, flip a coin. I don't know if it adds anything or not, but, at any rate, that's a content dispute, not an issue for IFD. As long as the image actually is available under a free license (which appears to be the case), keep it. BigDT 18:50, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
