God of War is an action-adventure video game series that is loosely based on Greek mythology and Norse mythology. Debuting in 2005, the series has become a flagship title for the PlayStation brand and the character Kratos is one of its most popular characters. The series consists of nine games across multiple platforms; the first seven games make up the Greek era while the following two comprise the Norse era. Games in the series have been praised as being the best action games for the PlayStation brand, and some of the best action games of all time. Strong sales and support of the series led to the franchise's expansion into other media, such as two comic book series, three novels, and a web-based graphic novel, with a television series currently in development. Merchandise promoting the series has also been produced, including artwork, clothing, toys, prop replicas, and original music.
