This page holds approved nominations that are waiting to appear in the "Did you know" section on the Main Page. Following DYK approval, nominations are processed and moved into a Prep area, and from there, prep sets are promoted to a queue, and then to the main page.

To create a new nomination or to see those that are yet to be approved, see Template talk:Did you know. For the discussion page see WT:DYK. Click on the link to go directly to the Special occasion holding area.

If some of the nominations are not showing up properly at the bottom of the page, these alternative pages can be used to view a subset of the most recent nominations.

Instructions for nominators edit

This page is for those nominations that have already been approved and are waiting to be promoted. If yours has been approved but has not yet been run on the main page, it should either be on this page or will soon be moved here, or already promoted to a Prep area or Queue ahead of an appearance on the main page.

If you wish to create a new nomination, please go to the Template talk:Did you know page; there are instructions there in a section similar to this one on how to nominate an article for DYK.

Frequently asked questions edit

Backlogged? edit

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until someone promotes it to a preparation area. To alleviate this problem, if the approved page has more than 120 approved hooks, then sets will change twice per day (every 12 hours) instead of once per day (every 24 hours). When the backlog falls below 60 approved nominations set frequency returns to once a day.

Where is my hook? edit

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to the nominations page, and it also isn't on this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is either in one of the prep areas, has been promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

Instructions for other editors edit

How to promote an accepted hook edit

  • See Wikipedia:Did you know/Preparation areas for full instructions.
  • In one window, open the DYK nomination subpage of the hook you would like to promote.
  • In another window, open the prep set you intend to add the hook to.
  • In the prep set...
    • Paste the hook into the hook area (be sure to not paste in that that)
    • Paste the credit information ({{DYKmake}} and/or {{DYKnom}}) into the credits area.
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted [[Jane Fonda]]", preview, and save
  • Back on DYK nomination page...
    • change {{DYKsubpage to {{subst:DYKsubpage
    • change |passed= to |passed=yes
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted original hook to Prep 3", preview, and save

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue edit

  • Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
  • Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
    • View the edit history for that page
    • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
    • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
  • Add a transclusion of the template back to the nominations page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from the nominations page.
  • If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

Assuming good faith on the sourcing. Obviously, going to have to wait til the QPQ is resolved to officially check this off. And I think June 28 would be a wonderful day for this hook. No copyvios detected (high confidence of violation due to direct quotes from reviews that have all been cited; AGF sources which can't go through Dup detector). Article is well-sourced. Main hook is 74 characters long (ALT1 is 113; ALT2 is 141); all three are under 200 character max. and are interesting. I won't use that image per WP:DYKIMG. Overall:   I don't see anything in the guidelines about QPQs needing to be done recently, but this one was done in 2021 and hasn't been used as a QPQ by the nominator before. If that's okay, then this nom is good to go. voorts (talk/contributions) 23:15, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Voorts, thank you for the review, I tried to do a few QPQs before I needed them and they have got rather old. Fortunately WP:QPQ says QPQs do not expire and may be used at any time for a future DYK nomination. TSventon (talk) 00:09, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Voorts and TSventon: I cannot confirm in any sources that this was the first known skeleton. Maybe first "complete" can be investigated if sources support? I do see a source for "Peale eventually founded the first natural history museum in the United States". But I do not know about the reliability of the source (czasopisma) - that can be investigated for a hook idea, or you can introduce a different hook. Bruxton (talk) 15:39, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Voorts and Bruxton: I was trying to put the hook in my own words and overdid the paraphrasing. When Semonin says the skeleton was complete I think he meant almost complete so I have reworded the article and the hook. Peale's museum as "the first natural history museum in the United States" is arguable, but would need more work. This argued it was not.

TSventon (talk) 23:14, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. It is difficult to find the hook because it is not explicit in the article. I did find the two parts to the hook in The Peale Mastodon section so ALT1 works. Bruxton (talk) 14:03, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
The hook is explicit but unreferenced in the lead, I could add a reference to the Smithsonian article there if that made things clearer. In the body one of the sentences was not immediately followed by a reference, so I fixed that.
By the way, on the first museum, I have seen things like the first successful public museum of natural history, but that would need to be discussed in the article and is not particularly hooky. TSventon (talk) 14:23, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

  •   Not interesting and a coatrack, since Huasun is surely not the person who made these decisions. (t · c) buidhe 00:07, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
    • @Buidhe: As Qin represented his country in the UNSC, he made the decision based on his country's political position. However, prior to 2011, China's vetoes in the UNSC were rare and only four times [5] were it used prior to the start of the 21st century. Since the mentioned vetoes were related to sending peacekeeping troops, it might be interesting as the users would look into the article to see why the peacekeeping resolutions were vetoed. However, if you any ideas for another hook in the article or if I should modify it in a certain phrasing, I am happy to consider that. - Toadboy123 (talk) 09:12, 7 May 2024 (UTC).Reply
      • Yes, I know how the UN works. Certainly the hook phrasing makes it sound like a coatrack. Frankly not all articles are suited for DYK and this one may not be. Peacekeeping is not inherently dull but UN resolutions can be, especially if there is no real information what the vote is really about. Furthermore, the article as it stands does not qualify due to sourcing. (t · c) buidhe 13:23, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
        • @Buidhe: Is there anything that I should do to improve the article such as adding more reliable sources or expanding the information regarding the reasons of the vetoed resolutions so that the article can be featured in DYK ? Or does the article does not have the information much needed for the DYK? I can improve the article based on your suggestions but if you feel there is no room for it in DYK then you can cancel this nomination. - Toadboy123 (talk) 02:26, 7 May 2024 (UTC).Reply
          • @Buidhe: I have added detailed information on the vetoed UN resolutions. Let me know if anything more has to be done. - Toadboy123 (talk) 06:56, 8 May 2024 (UTC).Reply

Much to whinge about here I'm afraid. As written, the biography section would deserve {{subsections}}, and much of its early paragraphs can feel more than a bit WP:Proseline at times and would deserve {{prose}}. None of the hook has an end-of-sentence citation, and given that WP:CLUMP says that "more than three [references] should generally be avoided", I'm not going through four. Take your time, and ping me when these are remedied.--Launchballer 10:12, 15 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I am willing to review this later today. Please think about rephrasing the hook or find a different one, because it's not just a reference to worms which was seen as a problem, but that the singer has to call himself or herself a worm. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:43, 18 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Interesting detailed article, on fine sources, offline sources accepted AGF, no copyvio obvious. I have the above problem with the hook, and actually the lead, where it says "described as a worm". I think it's key that the singer says it in the first person, referring to their own person, - not just to some worm. Perhaps just quote the complete phrase?
In the article, please check all quotation for punctuation that doesn't belong within the quote. I am also not sure about the capitals in the title, because - per this being the incipit (or first line), you could also have sentence case, as at least one source has (and hymnary.org seems undecided, having both on one page). Nice to meet you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:51, 18 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Gerda Arendt: Good to meet you too! Thanks for the review. I think I've made the required changes to the article. I'm not sure what the style requirements are for the title, but sources use both sentence case and title case. How about this for a hook:
ALT 1: ... that the 18th-century hymn "Alas! and Did My Saviour Bleed" has been criticised because its lyrics lead the singer to call themselves a "worm"?
 Mystery Merrivale  (talk) 19:35, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Laura Veale

  • Source: Several, including: Harrogate Advertiser: "Hampsthwaite commemorates North Yorkshire’s first female doctor Laura Sobey Veale". Note: This fact has had to be carefully interpreted. It was initially expressed as "the first Yorkshire woman to become a doctor" on the brown plaque, pictured in the article and written by the eminent Harrogate historian Malcolm Neesam. He meant "Yorkshire-born". However it has since been interpreted to mean that she was the first female doctor to practise in Yorkshire, which would be incorrect. Edith Pechey was the first qualified woman doctor to practise in Yorkshire, but she was born in Essex, so to local understanding she was definitely not a "Yorkshire woman" (they are very parochially-minded here). Veale was born in Yorkshire.

  •   The article was moved to mainspace yesterday, so is new enough. It is far more than long enough and properly uses in-line citations (perhaps even more so than necessary for some sentences). The copyvio detector doesn't find anything other than names of things and quotes that are properly used in the article. The hook is short enough, interesting, and is cited inline. The QPQ has been done and there's no image to review. Looks good to go! SilverserenC 20:41, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Thank you for the review, Silver seren Re the "even more so than necessary", you'll find that some experienced editors are doing that for a good reason. For example, if you have a "first" in the article, that is going to be automatically questioned and double-checked, and rightly so. Therefore, it is worth finding as many different, independent sources as possible for that "first" and including them all in the article. There is also the fact that some sources may be accessible to some readers (e.g. readers with a subscription, readers in the UK, etc.) and some source may not be accessible to all (e.g. readers outside the UK or without subscription), so it's worth giving them a few alternative sources. A third reason is that various sources give different aspects to the same fact, and some sources also include extra facts which the editor chooses not to include in the article, but which are extremely interesting. In the cast of historical articles, contemporary sources may give the historical standpoint on the matter. Extra sources containing additional facts may also allow other editors to expand the article. Nothing is wasted in this particular article, and there is a reason for everything. • Performing a review here. A QPQ is in progress for Hae Nang Maew, and I'm WP:AGF that it will be completed. The sources for the article look to be reliable, and I see no red flags as far as NPOV. Article is sufficiently new and long.
  • Let's work with ALT1, as I think it's the most interesting for outside readers. It also needs some edits to be clear for an outside reader.. "Instead of" is a little unclear as it implies that maybe she was supposed to do something and disobeyed. The article is more accurate in that the chair "represented her artistic vision of Syrian victims and refugees". We should also somehow note the Syrian context, both for the artist and refugees. This probably doesn't need more than a few wording tweaks, if you want to try again. Shooterwalker (talk) 15:42, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
    • Thanks for your review and comments. - How about ALT1a then? Munfarid1 (talk) 16:00, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
      • It's really close. Can we re-add context of who she is? (e.g.: a Syrian artist and activist?) I might consider a more precise word than "vision". Maybe "representation"? But if there isn't a better word, "vision" is fine. Shooterwalker (talk) 16:26, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
        • Well, I have added Syrian artist to ALT1b now, but IMHO "vision" is the better word here. Hooks are supposed to be somewhat enigmatic, to make people curious. I think you can choose now, and finish your review. Munfarid1 (talk) 21:02, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Overall:   An interesting article on a little-known ancient instrument. The date of creation, length and references are correct (AGF on offline sources), and the qpq has been done. The article relies heavily on primary sources, but these are only quoted, not interpreted, so that's good. We have a staggering 49% earwigs score, but this is due to the copied fragment. Anyway, I think that you should mention who is the translator of these fragments, before I declare the article plagiarism free. The phrase about "Athenian banquets" is repeated, one of the two occurrences should be paraphrased. The hook is cited, but is rather long, I think it should be shortened and - above all - the language should be made more fluid. Regarding the "surviving ancient snippets", I understand what you mean, but it should be better explained for the reader: adding some context would help. Cheers, Alex2006 (talk) 07:08, 9 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Alessandro57 can you clarify what kind of copyediting you're looking for. I'm guessing you're looking for a level of prose quality beyond what is requried by WP:DYKCRIT. In specific, see WP:DYKNOT, where it says Articles ... do not have to be of very high quality. If it fails some specific criteria, that needs to get fixed. If it's just that the prose could be better, that's not something to hold up an approval. RoySmith (talk) 14:05, 21 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I don't think that helps. If the point is that the first he placed an actual game of American football while in the NFL and never played the game before, that could probably be made clearer. •   Article was created on the same day as nomination. Article meets adequate quality standards and contains enough prose for DYK, my only suggestions are for "the western end of the building" to be potentially reworded just due to similarity in the source, and for the double space in the 'History' section to be fixed. Very interesting hook! I took a look at the source and I noticed that it had mentioned "Moriori, Maori, or Pakeha" (meaning the missionaries failed to convert Indigenous or European New Zealanders) and I'm wondering if this, or the fact that this took place in New Zealand, would be worth mentioning in the hook as well. Picture is relevant to the hook. QPQ done. Great work on the article! Please ping when concerns have been addressed. Thanks, B3251 (talk) 20:30, 9 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I think that it is unusual-and it is very unusual-is the hooky bit. It's a short hook anyway. Johnbod (talk) 14:25, 14 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
The point of a hook is to be short and sweet, and leave just a little mystery, enticing the reader to click through to the article. There's no need to tell people this is a religious subject, that's obvious from the title of the painting. And there's no need to tell them it's unusual, the fact that there's a dog speaks for that itself. RoySmith (talk) 15:16, 14 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Image eligibility:

QPQ: None required.

Overall:   Earwigs show 53.4% possible, but it's a case of false positive as the matched texts are part of a quoted paragraph, so we're good. And it's a bad source to be added here in this nom (paid, and also doesn't fully align with the hook as is, as pointed above by another user). However, sources used in the article are better, while another one doesn't explicitly mention the hook, but 2 does. Another point to be noted here is the number of lines of the code. It varies by publication. Although from the picture provided, yes there are 17 total markdowns, but some of them are empty, so it comes down to 11 "actual" lines. But some sources I checked, even outside this article, do not mention the specific number of lines, and the ones that do, 2 of which are also sourced in the article, have different numbers (17). Also, the article had some copy editing issues, which I've fixed. By the way, you may consider improving the sourcing style on this one (as it's also a GA nominee). Such as interlinking the publications, or consider introducing journal or book citations as well. But for my money, DYK seems good to go, however, the current blurb needs to be modified to something like ALT0a ... that in 2016, the removal of a few lines of code briefly "broke the Internet"? X (talk) 04:57, 15 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Xoak Thank you for the review! This is my first ever submission to DYK so I appreciate the thorough comments. I will go ahead and edit the blurb as suggested. Best, ~Liancetalk 16:24, 15 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Liance:, That's great! By the way a few friendly notes for future noms, when an ALT blurb is proposed, you can simply just reply with your support for that blurb or oppose or express your opinion on it. No need to alter your ALT0 (which is the original hook), and notice how I added "a" beside ALT0, since it's pretty much the same fact with minor tweaks. But if the fact differs totally, then it'd be listed as ALT1, ALT2 and so forth. And if you remove anything from the original hook after the review is done, you should mention it for historical/future references (i.e., the removal of the image). Anyway, thank you for your creation and inviting you to contribute to more DYKs. Regards.
  Approving the modified original hook.

Hooks is interesting and checks out; however, out of the two sentences in the article that make this claim, none have a citation immediately following; since you're using the Depaulis source, you should put it after "which unlike polis remained popular to this day". (However, the quote from Max Nelson needs a citation afterwards too.) QPQ checks out. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 16:47, 15 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
    • Generalissima, I am not sure if I fully understand what you mean - end of paragraph citations are fine AFAIK for short paragraphs where there are no other sources. That said, I've added a direct quotation relevant to the hook's claim to one of the refs - I hope will address the main issue. •   New, long enough, wonderfully written, and interesting throughout; QPQ done. The source apparently verifies the hook (I used automatic translation on the Mongolian text), but I cannot determine the quality of the source, as the publisher is not identified -- if it self-published, as it looks, I have reservations about its usability anywhere in the article, and especially for sourcing the hook. Also, assuming the source is reliable: the hook is fun and all, but the article has much more interesting facts, which seem to be quoted to much more reliable sources -- how about something on his refusal to criticize Genghis? Dahn (talk) 18:45, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
    • Thanks for the review Dahn! The source may be self-published, but its author, Ishdorj, Ts., was a reputable Mongolian historian. Now, being a 20th century Mongolian historian means that you're not very prominent on Google, but you can still find evidence of his subject-matter expertise at links such as [14] [15] and [16]. He is also mentioned in a New York Times article and was the recipient of a medal for his contributions to scholarship. After finishing the article, I had actually found more details on his avoidance of censorship, and now we have a new paragraph! As for another hook, how about ALT1: ... that Shagdarjavin Natsagdorj's remarks at an academic conference led to a communist purge and contributed to the Sino-Soviet split? ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 20:16, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
      • I am not doubting Ishdorj's qualifications, but the problem with self-published sources is that they are generally (or universally) below the RS threshold, regardless of who the author is; we generally cannot trust their content to have been edited by anyone, and we technically can't even tell it's an actual article by Ishdorj (it probably is, and as such written in a blog-ish manner, but still...). I won't insist that you remove it from the article, but I would suggest that it should not be used for the front-page hook. Therefore:
      •   for a very interesting ALT1. Dahn (talk) 20:23, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Overall:   Article properly expanded, no copy vio. Sources used appear reliable. I've done some minor copy edits. ALT0 is rather uninteresting and dull, ALT1 in the hook it is mentioned as "subscription library" and this term has been used in the lead as well, but with no citation although the fact is cited later on in the History section. But as DYK hook rules suggest, the terms used in the hook should be cited in the article somewhat as is. Currently, the cited description in the history section does not mention the word subscription, and the sources do not mention it directly, which is fine here as we can calibrate that easily from the stated info. But it'd be better if you made a mention of that word in that section as well. ALT2 is the most interesting of the bunch. However, it needs a bit of rewording. The source cited mention "due to concerns over Asbestos" but the hooks states directly "due to asbestos". This should be reworded. Moving to ALT3, it feels rather mundane. Ping me once you've made the adjustments. Regards. X (talk) 02:50, 18 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • @Xoak: I've decided to lean into ALT2 and ALT3. Reworded ALT2 as you suggested, and clarified what I was going for with ALT3 (the interest part was that it was only added after it was closed). Half-considering adding an ALT4 about how the Modern building was the first such building to be added to the Register, but I'm banking mainly on ALT2, which I agree is the most interesting. I was also thinking of adding another hook about how the 1877 fire originated from Fox's American Theatre considering it was in DYK recently, but I can't find a source that clearly states the connection and I doubt it would be particularly interesting to anyone except Philadelphia architectural historians. • Comment I'm an IP user so I think I can't approve the overall DYK, but just a heads up that I'm a Korean speaker and I verified that both hook 1 and ALT1 are supported by the sources given. I'll give a slight comment that I'd prefer ALT1 be worded as "... that Ryu Sung-hyun (pictured) will become the first Korea National Sport University student athlete to compete at two Olympic Games?" Think the meaning of this is slightly clearer and it's slightly more concise. I prefer the main hook to ALT1 though; think it's more interesting. 104.232.119.107 (talk) 07:35, 19 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your input. I have changed the wording on ALT1. I was trying to figure out how to emphasize that he is competing in two Olympics while enrolled in the school- there are multiple alumni who have competed in multiple Olympics. -Riley1012 (talk) 12:50, 19 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Comment: hooks that treat the future as definite are problematic. I'm assuming Ryu Sung-hyun has qualified for the Olympics, but even athletes on their country's Olympic teams sometimes don't end up competing due to injury, illness, accident, or some other complication, so "will" is a problem (see WP:CRYSTAL). Perhaps "is set to become" could be used (though, like the IP user, I prefer the original hook):
Note that if you want the Olympics in the original hook, you can do so simply by adding "Olympian" before his name. —BlueMoonset (talk) 04:33, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Oh, thank you. Thank you for getting that joke because, there are plenty of people on the production team I had to explain that too. (laughs) And then you get people who don’t understand the joke and they go, “Can we cut it?”

I verified the third hook through this article, which says: "It isn’t a full continuity-chucking “reboot” of the Whoniverse – the events of An Unearthly Child in 1963 got a specific call-out ..." Cunard (talk) 01:48, 19 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

  •   Reviewing this, new article and no copyvio according to Earwig. No QPQ needed as this is first nom, the sentence also cited in the article. However I have one suggestion for the prep to maybe truncate it to just "held meetings in school halls" as the other part feels subjective and not stated outright in the source. Overall:   The article was created on 22 May 2024. It has a readable prose size of 3211 characters. QPQ not yet done. WP:EARWIG shows now copyvios. More comments later.

Each paragraph has a source. Some parts of the lead and the section "Early life and education" sound very similar to the text in Moulton 1893, p. 722. This needs to be rewritten to avoid WP:CLOSEPARAPHRASE. I didn't check the rest of the article so please make sure that the problem is not found in other parts as well. The hooks are interesting and supported by the source. Both hooks are too long: they should be below 200 characters and ideally below 160 characters. The picture is freely licenced, used in the article, and clear. Phlsph7 (talk) 13:44, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Phlsph7: thanks for your evaluation. Some parts of the lead and the section "Early life and education" sound very similar Because they are similar. I've used it as a source material, and "the article merely presents standard facts for a topic like this in standard sequence. The article does not copy any creative words or phrases, similes or metaphors." And a direct comparison with the Moulton source shows no violation. However, all of these becomes irrelevant here because the dictionary is in public domain and properly attributed in the source section. Regardless PD or not, the article does not closely paraphrase, rather presents standard facts in an orderly sequence. WP:LIMITED exists. Although redundant, I've now added a PD template as well in the ref section (which is usually done if it's a case of somewhat direct copy-paste, although this isn't the case here). Re the blurb's lentgh, while nominating I made sure they are under 200 characters. And yes shorter blurbs would be better. We may simply remove the "American educator" bits: ALT0b ... that Lois E. Trott (pictured) ran the first lodging house for homeless girls in America, providing shelter and support for over 1,000 girls annually, all without receiving any payment? ALT0c... that Lois E. Trott (pictured) ran the first lodging house for homeless girls in America, providing shelter and support without receiving any payment?

Let me know which one you prefer or if have your own opinion. Regards. X (talk) 07:24, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

The template should solve the close-paraphrase problem. I wasn't aware that the phrase "(pictured)" does not count towards the character limit (per WP:DYK200), which means that the original hooks pass the test. I think all that remains is the QPQ. Phlsph7 (talk) 07:55, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
