Wikipedia:2009

This page is a chronology of events in year 2009 directly related to Wikipedia and Wikipedians, both within Wikipedia and in the whole wide world. Wikipedia events and events in sister projects (Wiktionary, Wikibooks, etc.) are listed as long as they are related to Wikipedia.

Additions to this page must follow certain rules,[a] because it is hoped that in 50 years or so this page will become a valuable source of scholar research.


Events edit

  • January 16: Italian Wikipedia won the Premiolino award [1]
  • January 21: Kennedy-Byrd incident: two politicians were announced dead by wikipedia vandals, stirring news[2] and prompting Jimbo Wales to request the activation of Flagged Revisions on English Wikipedia
  • January 26: Mozilla announced a $100,000 grant to the Wikimedia Foundation to advance open video [3]
  • February: Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art, a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest among museums and cultural institutions worldwide happens aimed at illustrating Wikipedia articles, coordinated by the Brooklyn Museum;
  • February 16: Wikipedia Signpost: editor-in-chief Ral315 is replaced by Ragesoss; a new section, "Discussion Report" introduced
  • March 17: The Wikipedia Revolution: How a bunch of nobodies created the world's greatest encyclopedia (ISBN 1401303714) by User:Fuzheado (Andrew Lih) [4]
  • March 12: Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles marked the completion of writing articled for the list of notable films compiled in 2005
  • May 25: The 100,000th article in Arabic Wikipedia created: المعهد العالي للفنون والحرف بقابس ("The Higher Institute of Arts and Crafts" of the University of Gabès in Tunisia).[5]
  • May 28: After long proceedings, Arbcom issued a massive restriction, including numerous bans against editors affiliated with Scientology. This was the first intentional ban of a whole organization for alleged pushing their agenda on wikipedia. [6]
  • June 15: Wikimedia to relicense its content as Massive Multiauthor Collaborations under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 license, in addition to the current GFDL license
  • June 22: Beginning of "Wiki Loves Art" event in Netherlands (van 22 juni tot 1 september 2009): volunteers will visit Dutch museums to take photographs of art objects. The photos will be published online with a creative commons (CC) license. The project is run by Creative Commons Netherlands and Wikimedia Netherlands, in collaboration with the Amsterdam Museum Night Foundation and the Netherlands Institute for Heritage.[7][8]
  • July 25-26: Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Wiki-Conference 2009 at New York University
  • August 17: The 3,000,000'th article, Beate Eriksen, was created by user:Lampman
  • August: An iPhone app, Wikipedia Mobile, is announced.[9]

  1. ^ While formally Wikipedia:Verifiability and others of Wikipedia's content-controlling policies do not apply outside the main namespace, they must be strictly followed here, for the sake of scholarly discipline:
    • The listed event and its date must be mentioned in a wikilinked or externally linked reference. It is advised to consider an external link to a specific version of a Wikipedia page rather than a wikilink, if this page is linked for a critical but volatile piece of information.
    • Credible sources must be used only. Within Wikipedia, Wikipedia Signpost is one of them.
    • Trivial events must be avoided:
