Template:Sesame Street edit

Hi Z, I wanted to talk to you about the changes you made to this template. You added a new section, "Characters". Personally, I don't think that it's necessary. First off, there are character lists already included in other the "General" section. Secondly, you state in your edit summary that you added "all the major Muppet characters". Who decides which are major and which are not? What about Biff and Scully, or Harvey Kneeslapper, or Murray Monster? And what about human characters, like Chris or Bob or Alan? My point is that there have been so many characters, it's impossible to list them all in a template, which is why there are lists. I appreciate your contribution, but my vote is to remove the new section in this template. Thanks. Christine (talk) 22:33, 10 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

At first it was only the Muppet characters, but after noticing there were only three other Sesame Street character pages I added those too. Also, I only added the characters that had pages (a couple I didn't think needed them, but I won't decide that). The reason I did this is because the Sesame Street characters, especially the Muppets, are integral to Sesame Street. Whenever someone thinks of that show, they likely think of Big Bird, Cookie Monster, or Elmo. Other "media" templates have the same thing. Look at Template:Muppet films. There's a character section there and that one has many more Muppet pages than Sesame Street does. Adding the Character section to existing media templates is almost universal. Just a few, Star Trek, Batman, almost every soap opera (and in many cases the number of characters on these are enormous), etc. Seeing that Sesame Street didn't have one was almost a shock. I think that adding the characters, one of the most important parts of a show, to the template really helps people navigate the subject, which is what these Templates are for in the first place. --Zzyxzaa26 (talk) 06:56, 11 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
I understand what you're saying. You're right, of course, that the characters are integral to The Show. I disagree with your statement that characters sections in templates is "universal". Template:Muppet films does have a character section, but remember that there are far fewer characters in the films than in Sesame Street, which number in the thousands. I looked at the templates you mentioned. Template:Star Trek and Template:Batman lists characters. However, if you look at The Simpsons, which has been my model in the work I've done for the SS articles, you'll see that it has its own template dedicated to the characters, Template:Simpsons characters, as does the one for the British soap EastEnders. If we were to include characters in a template for The Show, I think it'd be best if it were a separate template like in my examples. BTW, I agree that there needs to be articles created for more SS/Muppets characters. What's needed more, though, is the improvement of the existing characters' articles, some of which are very low in quality. It wouldn't take a lot of research, although if you or someone else would to take it on (hint hint), I recommend the Michael Davis and Louise Gikow books, as well as individual autobiographies, like the ones by Carroll Spinney or Kevin Clash. Christine (talk) 17:39, 11 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
I was originally going to create a separate template for the Sesame Street characters, but I decided against it on the fact that there weren't enough pages (in my opinion) to warrant the need for one. I don't think the present template is "overloaded" by having some of the major characters on it. It takes up three lines. For The Simpsons and Eastenders, however, it would make the template far too "unwieldy", these having between six and nineteen lines respectively, not counting headers. Either way though, I feel like there definitely needs to be a template for these Sesame Street character pages scattered around. I can make a new template for it, if you'd prefer that, but like I said, I don't think it's necessary at this point. --Zzyxzaa26 (talk) 17:52, 11 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Good point. However, if you were to include every "major" character from all three lists--Muppets, humans, and animated--the template would be definitely unwieldy. I'd bet that it'd be much longer than six lines, and perhaps even more than nineteen. So yes, I support the creation of a new template, so go knock yerself out, man. ;) I'll help however I can, starting with the suggestion that you draw from the aforementioned lists. If you'll notice, I did put an explanation in the edit summary: "conspiracy theorist" is not a professional title, removed from first sentence. Discuss it on the Milton William Cooper talk page before "re-reverting" it please. And don't just use a copy-paste template on my talk page if it doesn't fit. --Zzyxzaa26 (talk) 05:54, 3 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
