Wits Solar Car

I agree with the previous statement about the Stig, I spent over an hour this morning on the wits solar car page just for you to delete everything. It demotivates me to do any Wikipedia editing if I know everything will just be deleted without any discussion as to why its being deleted. South African Language ID

Hi Zunaid. I noticed your helpful response on the Entertainment Refdesk about the meaning of "ke nako" and was wondering if you could answer a question I posted on the Language RefDesk, which basically got the response: "Ask somebody from South Africa." In my broadcaster's coverage of the World Cup (ESPN USA), an announcer with a South-African-English accent welcomes the viewers back after a commercial with a short utterance from some (presumably spoken in South Africa) language. Here's a YouTube clip. You'll find examples at about 0:40, 1:10, and 1:20 in. Can you identify the language(s) and what any of these examples mean? Image registration for World Cup burst-mode images

Hello Zunaid, I have offered to perform additional processing on your source image, even though you marked the thread "resolved". Do you have original high-resolution images? Otherwise I will do my best with the frames from the current GIF. Nimur (talk) 20:54, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

I've got about 13 8MP JPEG's. I was wondering whether it's better to align every image so that the background is as static as possible or whether to actually crop each frame appropriately so as to create a "pan and zoom" effect following the flight of the ball. I can send you the original images if you want, on condition that you don't use them but for creating the GIF to upload to WP, and that you delete them afterwards. Sorry to be so pedantic but I did go to a lot of effort to take those pictures and wouldn't want them to get out. I'll take your word for it on this :) What's the best way of getting them to you? I can promise not to use these images for any purpose other than the specified purpose of creating one high-quality auto-registered animation for Wikipedia. I've been working on some numerical image registration code as a hobby-project, and this looks like a perfect test-data-set. If you like, I can give you access to anonymous secure FTP on nimur.com - I can set this up for you later this evening and pass some details your way. The most raw unprocessed images are best - any manual pre-processing does not actually interfere with the algorithmic alignment (though it may decrease quality), but I'm trying to parameterize my system for optimal alignment search-space based on real-world examples. Dam. Two problems: 1. I thought to ftp things you just type in a ftp:// address as usual straight into Firefox and it would prompt you for a username and password if required. 2. Our ADSL at home is down so I'm on the 3G card again. There was a repeater fault on the SEACOM cable somewhere between Mombasa and Mumbai which affects our connection to Europe and India and the rest of the world. It will thus be intermittent. Basically we're screwed for the next few days until they fix it for sure. I can try to send the pics from work tomorrow if I have time, but you'll need to tell me how to access the ftp server. Regarding (1), this is an SFTP, not a FTP server (because FTP is unsecured); so you will need either an sftp or scp client (WinSCP is a good one). I know security doesn't matter for this usage, but I don't have an FTP system set up anywhere. (2) There's no rush, I'm tuning my algorithm on the GIF version you uploaded already and hopefully will have a ready-to-run version for the high-resolution inputs; if it turns out this is not worth the effort, just let me know. I'm eager to try out my image/video stabilization codes on new real-world data sets (and I don't have a burst-mode camera, so I have to borrow my images!). Nimur (talk) 19:36, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

It is done (or should be in a few more minutes). For interest's sake how does your code work? I would guess you compute the correlation between images and adjust angle, zoom and position to maximise it? Or is it more complicated than that? A quick-and-dirty solution could possibly be coded up quickly in MATLAB, although something more sophisticated would obviously take much longer. Sounds like an interesting signal processing problem; takes me back to my undergrad and post-grad thesis days. Let me know when it's done, I'd like to see the result. Yes, but I am computing the optimal fit, which means I have a model to represent the shift between two images, and when I compute the correlation, I also seek parameterized updates to the shift; and iterate until I find the best possible alignemnt. What's particularly unique about my method (in development) is the way I discount "outliers" in the scene - in other words, we expect the individual players and crowd to move around, and we want to ignore the contributions of those errors to the alignment algorithm. Separating vehicles by generation rather than powertrain or trim level

Hi, I am just dropping a note to inform you of a discussion currently taking place here (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Automobiles#Mass article merger). In summary, WikiProject Automobiles is soliciting opinions based on the separation of automobile articles by generation, as opposed to other means such as powertrain or trim level. For example, rather than having an article on the Audi S3, the Audi A3 article would be split into two sub-articles (one for each generation), and the S3 content would be moved to the appropriate location. This would place automobiles with common engineering in the same place, as opposed to grouping by a mere marketing term. Since separate articles are always provided to detail the powertrain (engine and transmission, et cetera), the partitioning of articles based on this principle is superfluous (the powertrain is only briefly discussed in the article about the car). The reason for giving the actual powertrain a separate article is to cut down on overlap: engines and transmissions are almost universally used in more than one model.

Hi there Zunaid, thanks for efforts to improve refs. However, I noticed in some of your edits you appear to be using the refLinks python script, I just had a couple of questions about that. Firstly, are you running this as an automatic script (e.g. not reviewing the edits before saving them, regardless of if they are reviewed afterwards). In addition, some of your edits, like this one, seem to be replacing names of already named references with autogeneratedn, this is not advisable, as it reduces readability. Hi. Sorry for the late reply, I haven't checked WP in a few days. I run the script completely automatically whenever I find bare URL references in articles, using a bookmarklet I have saved. It saves the edits automatically without me having to click. I did not know that it actually breaks already named references, this is something that the script author could probably fix up. Right, well really you shouldn't be running that on your main account, and you should not be using it without getting it approved at WP:BRfA. Also, it seems the script it slightly outdated, the bot it was designed for hasn't edited since 2009.
