Hello,

are you sure about the results of the Tour de Ski race in Nové Město na Moravě on 29 December, which you have added into the Wikipedia article? I have read completely different results (with Lukáš Bauer as the winner). Club logos

Hi there. You probably don't know this, but as club logos are subject to copyright laws, they can only be used on Wikipedia when their usage is deemed to be Fair Use. Their use on tournament season articles, such as the ones you have been adding the logos to, does not usually constitute Fair Use. I've posted my comment on the talk page, but there hasn't been any inputs from someone else. They are all only temporary tables until a consesus has been reached anyway. You accidentally added the country flags back on the NHL playoffs page. They were removed as per the Wikipedia Manual of Style. Please see the discussion in the talk page of the NHL playoffs page, and remove the flags that you re-added. Thanks!

You're right, it was accidental, but I would do it again, because it seems like you've misunderstood the paragraph. The paragraph [2] you're referring to was added by User:Gnevin about two weeks ago, and was only added after a suggestion on the talk page, which hadn't been discussed and therefore haven't reached consensus.
Anyway; The reason why he is suggesting flags on "Formula 1 drivers" as incorrect use, is because there aren't any National team for Formula 1 drivers. But he is suggesting that flags on "Football players" should be allowed, since they can be a part of a National team."Hockey players" can also be a part of a National team, and can therefore, according to Gnevin, have a flag next to them. lil2mas (talk) 00:14, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Olympic road race

I put the table for last Olympics's finishing times in my sandbox to easily put in the times from today's race, but does it perhaps need this IOC template you put in for the non-finishers? If so, I am unsure how that would work in the table, perhaps not at all.

And this is more of an opinion question, but is it suitable to use the word "peloton" on that page? The broadcasters I'm listening to are using it, but that seems like it has to be a Tour-specific term, doesn't it? Nosleep (talk) 08:44, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm not familiar with using this template actually, but I've seen it been used in many other Olympic articles. It has something to do with getting the right flag according to the IOC. Try to use the template, but if it doesn't work, just let it be and let other users modify it if necessary! ;o)

When it comes to my opininon, I think peloton would be ok to use, but look in this glossary and see if you can use some the synonyms. If you decide to use peloton, then wikilink it as I did. =) lil2mas (talk) 09:01, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Difference between competition and round templates; redirects

The difference between competition and round is that a competition template should link to the head of a certain article while a round template should link to a specific sub-part of a certain article. The link information is stored in the respective categories (Competitions and Rounds). For example:

|s=2009-10 |c=Norwegian First Division links to the template Template:Fb competition 2009 Norwegian First Division, where the exact link and the text to be displayed is stored.

|s=2009-10 |c=UEL |r=QR2 links to the template Template:Fb round2 2009-10 UEL QR2. This template contains a link to the corresponding subheading within the UEFA Europa League 2009-10 article and the text to be displayed.

If round templates are to be applied (this is usually the case for cup-like or other rather complex tournaments), both the c= and r= links must be given in order to ressolve the link correctly.

As for your suggestion: Oddly enough, I did not experience any forwardings to the redirect pages. If I clicked on a link, the correct round of the correct article appeared. This might probably be a browser (I use Firefox 3.0) or a cache issue. Nevertheless, since I am updating most of the current season articles by myself (with main assistance by Rougue1987, because it takes some time to do 50+ leagues), the corresponding templates will be changed anyway during the weekend, so there is nothing to worry about. :-)

I really appreciate your effort and I hope you'll have success with that area. Doing anything to improve Wikipedia is great but I suggest you (although I'm not too experienced as I'm a relatively new editor) that you could first start some new unwritten cup or other articles (check out the template at the bottom) instead of editing existing ones. Vålerenga, Norwegian Cup and UEL 2009-10

Are you sure that Vålerenga will qualify for QR3? I'm just asking because we recently had some problems with a similar problem at the Faroe Islands article, where EB/Streymur won the double as well, thus passing the cup winners' spot over to finalists B36. Originally, SonjiCeli, Rougue1987 and me all thought that B36 would earn the usual place in QR2, but other people stated that the order of entries would be adjusted in a way as seen in the article (please read it there, it is a little complicated to explain), citing section 1.04 of the UEFA Cup regulations.

So, if those were applied here, Vålerenga would swap rounds with the third-placed team (most likely to be Tromsø at the moment), but again, we are not certain that this will be true at all. Have you got any information on the topic? Cheers, Hockey-holic (talk) 22:33, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't know what this guy is doing. Best bet would be to bring it up at WT:FOOTY and see if it can be resolved there. Hello. I've noticed that you have added several new "triple intersection" categories such as this one for footballers. While I appreciate your efforts to improve Wikipedia's coverage of football, this appears to be a case of overcategorization (as Category:Expatriate footballers in Austria would suffice). Indeed, there was a CfD on this very topic which resulted in delete all. See: [3]. I am going to begin reverting these triple intersects back to the parent categories and wanted to let you know. My reason for "overcategorising", as you call it, is to reduce the number of categories on a footballers article. I have witnessed an article of a footballer playing in 5 countries, having 13 categories like;

• Category:Expatriate footballers
• Category:Norwegian expatriate footballers
• Category:Expatriate footballers in Germany
• ...in Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, England
• Category:Norwegian expatriates
• Category:Expatriates in Germany
• ...in Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom

...which could be reduced to the only 5: Category:French expatriate footballers in Spain, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, England.

If you look at: Category:Norwegian expatriate footballers, isn't that category easier to use and maintain than :Category:Brazilian expatriate footballers?
...and how about Category:Expatriate footballers in Norway vs. :Category:Expatriate footballers in Germany.

I actually noticed someone else starting the categorisation like that and thought it was a good idea, so I followed him/her. I weren't aware of the discussion or else I would have contributed with my views. However, I think I made my point clear and hope you will take it into consideration before reverting the work some of us editors have made! lil2mas (talk) 23:42, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

No worries. First, let me comment that no article needs both Expatriate footballers and Expatriate footballers in "Country X" categories (only the latter). Also, there is no need for an article to have both Expatriates in "Country X" and Expatriate footballers in "Country X" categories (only the latter). In fact, the "Country Y" expatriate footballers in "Country X" categories should result in exactly the same number of categories on a players article. The difference is that there are potentially 200x more total categories created for each country. I don't think there is any point in creating categories that will only have 1 member (such as Slovak expatriate footballers in Costa Rica - there is one!). If you feel that the CfD came to an incorrect conclusion, I'd recommend going for a deletion review. What you did was fine, except you should have noted where the disambig text from Roy Miller came from in the edit summary - I did this at Talk:Roy Miller. A proper history merge can't be done because the content from Roy Miller was *merged* to Roy Miller (footballer), and any history merge would cause overlapping history entries. Not quite, since the discoveries page and the proposals page serve different purposes and less people tend to watch the discoveries page. They're still new templates - they have different names and different purposes, even if they're only slight changes to other types - so there's still a need to propose at least a general intention at WP:WSS/P (something like "I'd like to create by-nation templates for handball stubs, with categories for any that reach 60 stubs", mentioning the discussion that's taken place at WSS/D and that there are similar splits for other sports). If you get the okay from that (and I don't see any reason why you shouldn't), then it'd be okay to go ahead, listing any you make on the stub type page. Grutness...wha? 00:09, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Template ct

Brilliant idea, and it looks like it's working well enough. One thing I've noticed so far - I was toying with the parameters a little in previews and I noticed that {{ct|SAX|2008b}} gives "Team CSC-Saxo Bank." There's no hyphen in that name. Another is {{ct|ALM|2006}}, which give "Ag2r Prévoyance." I'm quite sure the G and the R were capitalized under this team name (they certainly were in the Wikipedia article at the time), and that they're only now lower-case with La Mondiale.

Explaining my edit

Just to explain my revert of your edit at Ice Hockey World Championships [4], I thought it would just be simpler (and more stable) to stay with the 2008 rankings for now, and then update everything at once once the 2009 Championships conclude. It also makes things easier to understand. Hi, I moved this article to the current namespace, because this is the club's real name. Nowhere on their official website is the English transliteration used. This is also the name used by the Danish League. This is common practice, when it comes to Nordic teams, e.g. Vålerenga Ishockey & Vålerenga Fotball. The AaB handball article should be moved to AaB Håndbold and the football article should be moved to AaB Fodbold or Aalborg BK (football). Hi, it sounds reasonable. AaB Ishockey do not play very many international games, but when they do I believe they are named Aalborg BK. I know for sure AaB Fodbold is using Aalborg BK as name in international games, so the right name for them might be Aalborg BK (football) as you suggest. There seems to be a minor flaw with the changes you did. The category "Talk message boxes" propagates from the talk message box template you created to the standings templates I created. I used 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification (UEFA) group talk as a template, when I made this one. And when I check the category, there are many other similar templates which also get categorized. But I can understand why you're reacting. I have never actually given it any thought before, but it looks like this box actually is designed to be used on talk pages, shouldn't really matter though. But since the category-syntax is already given in the {{Tmbox}}-template, I don't know how to remove it, other than substing the template and "<noinclude>" the category. Race names, dashes and spaces

I will confess that I might be careless in thinking about what length of dash I insert in articles and links to them, and usually shrug off edits that change them, I was surprised by your recent changes to 2010 UCI World Ranking:

• The race links were directly copied across from the 2009 rankings article, with just the year changed. It seems likely that if the first major Belgian race last year was in an article called 2009 Gent-Wevelgem, then next season's race is more likely to be created at 2010 Gent-Wevelgem than at 2010 Gent–Wevelgem with a longer dash.

You didn't do anything wrong, I just corrected the links according to its main article, i.e. Gent–Wevelgem. I would also presume that the article is most likely to be created at 2010 Gent-Wevelgem, but since that ain't the correct namespace, I replaced the hyphen (-) with an en-dash (–), hoping that the creator of that article would use that (2010 Gent–Wevelgem) redlink when he/she is going to create the article. You see, I don't have the capacity to move all the race pages myself, so I hope by correcting some links, others will follow and do the same. Spellings

I am using the NHL spellings on the pages that are articles where the cites are from NHL guides. The Draft articles. Other spellings are spellings from other languages. You cannot use Djurgarden, that refers to a place, not a hockey clob. Using HC is a common abbreviation. Alaney2k (talk) 22:08, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Those spellings are wrong, and Wikipedia is not the place to spread incorrect information. You can use the references to source information, but that information should be adjusted to Wikipedia articles where applicable (as in this case). When you're listing hockey clubs, you can leave out the abbreviation, as it is clear they are talking about the club, not the place. Just as Yahoo! Sports does here. I can give you more examples if you like. BTW: By using your logic, we should alter all the NHL clubs to Tampa Bay HC, Philadelphia HC, Detroit HC, San Jose HC, and so on... Hi again, sorry about us getting off on the wrong foot, last time around. My choice of template last time was maybe uncalled for; I just wanted to let you know that I thought your edits were unconstructive and that they had been reverted, before you made the changes to further articles. Since you were rapidly implementing these changes, I had to find a template fast. So I chose one with a low degree, and skimmed through it to see if there were any harsh messages on it. (I only wanted to give a friendly shout-out!) I thought there weren't any, so I used it. Unfortunately, the edit was called vandalism, something I didn't want to call it, as it clearly wasn't. Hope you accept my apology, and I will try to clarify some of the issues at Talk:1997 NHL Entry Draft during the weekend. I hope we can put the past behind us, and focus more on the subject of matter.

Back to your question: The use of nicknames in the Nordic countries (actually Europe as a whole) is a rather new phenomenon. Some clubs have them, some clubs don't. Some clubs use them, some clubs don't. It is, unfortunately, not like the NHL where it always is (toponym)(nickname). I can give you a good example, by looking at a list of ice hockey teams in Norway (I'm Norwegian by the way). That list is a complete list of all senior competitive ice hockey clubs in Norway. I want you to mainly focus on the teams in GET-ligaen, as it is the only professional league in Norway. (If you look at the First Division, you already find several B-teams (similar to NHL's minor league affiliates, but here administered by the club itself), like Vålerenga 2.) I will now present the different structures of team names:

• 1. Departments of a multi-sports club – Most ice hockey teams in Scandinavia are formed as departments of a multi-sports club.
  • a. Clubs with sports suffixes – Look at Vålerenga Ishockey: It is part of the multi-sports club Vålerengens IF, and have departments for several sports. The club have chosen to call their two largest deparments; Fotball (English: football) and Ishockey (English: ice hockey), after their. (The club also have an American football department, which actually have a nickname: Vålerenga Trolls.)
    • Other teams like this: Furuset Ishockey (Furuset IF)
  • b. Clubs with nicknames – Look at Frisk Tigers: It is part of the multi-sports club IF Frisk Asker. The club has chosen to give the elite hockey team an English nickname.
  • c. Clubs with nicknames and sports suffixes – Look at Manglerud Star Ishockey: It is part of the multi-sports club IL Manglerud Star. Since the multi-sports club already have a nickname, the club chose to add a sports suffix.

• 2. Pure ice hockey clubs – Some teams break out of their original multi-sports club (or never been part of one at all), to start a pure ice hockey club.
  • a. Clubs with abbreviations – Look at Lillehammer IK: IK is here short for Ishockeyklubb (English: ice hockey club). IHK is sometimes also used to abbreviate this term. The abbreviaton could also be in front of the team name, but then as a proper noun. (see point 2.d)
    • Other teams like this: Lørenskog IK, Rosenborg IHK
  • b. Clubs with nicknames – Look at Stavanger Oilers: The club's official name is Stavanger Ishockeyklubb (Stavanger IK), but they market their club with the English nickname Oilers. (Like the Edmonton Oilers)
    • Other teams like this: Storhamar Dragons, Trondheim Black Panthers
  • c. Clubs with a fictional name, and a nickname – Look at Sparta Warriors: The club started out as a ice hockey department under multi-sports club IL Sparta, but the club got bankrupt, and the ice hockey team started their own club. The major difference between Sparta and the earlier clubs I mentioned, is that there is no place(toponym) in Norway called Sparta. Which means this club now uses a "made up" name followed by a nickname. (You could actually draw parallels to the NBA-team Golden State Warriors.)
  • d. Clubs with only a fictional name and an abbreviation – Look at IK Comet: This club has the abbreviation in front of the team name, which is quite common (although after is the most common usage). When IK is in front of the club name, it uses its proper noun, Ishockeyklubben (English: The ice hockey club). Comet is similar to Sparta, a fictional name, no places in Norway called by that name.

Summary: I think you got more information than you could have asked for, but there's no such thing as too much is there? =) I will try to categorize some Swedish and Finnish teams under the different sections during the weekend. But the short answer to your question is that the standard rule is (toponym)(nickname) when it is using English nicknames, but as you see from my reasoning above there are also clubs who only uses a fictional name. Which mean they do not use a toponym in their team name. Like the Finnish team Jokerit: I noticed you made a redirect yesterday Helsinki Jokerit, this would be right if it were English: Helsinki Jokers. But since you just insert a toponym to specify where it comes from (not part of the official name), it should be written like Jokerit Helsinki. This would also apply for the Frisk Asker, Comet Halden and Sparta Sarpsborg. Hope this gets you somewhere! Please give me feedback on what you are planning to do. (You can leave this discussion here) There are a couple of issues. When listing teams for a list, you use a consistent format. Especially when listing winners you use both the nickname and the city. There are unique names in North America. Regardless of the correct name, you use both. For example 67's or Marlboros in Canada. In a list we use Ottawa 67's and Toronto Marlboros. And, as I mentioned before, we designate something to indicate when a club does not have a nickname, eg Ottawa HC, or Montreal HC. Do you see? This is not an issue of correctness, or using the club's own spelling. It is a case of using consistent, verifiable spellings. Now, if you notice the older NHL drafts articles do not use diacritics, even after teams using them started to be drafted from. The newer ones do. You know how I'd rather use the NHL spelling, but I'd also like to use the toponym nickname that is appropriate. I am completely open to not following the NHL spelling if we have an alternate standard that is verifiable. That would remove my objection to using diacritics, but I do feel that we have to have some conformity and consistency. Of course, if there is an english name for a place, like Gothenburg, we have to figure out something. If we are to have a table using the toponym and nickname, then we must do so for European teams also. It's just more professional and encyclopedic. Like all encyclopedias, it is going past what is necessary. So Jokerit Helsinki is okay, rather than Helsinki Jokerit, but I want to use it in all places. I don't know what an acceptable form for Djurgardens. I don't know whether it is the Hockey Club by itself or an association team. Not clear from the article. I would accept an acronym for Hockey Club in the native language. All teams that are hockey clubs like that for that country should use that. All teams that are an association team, well they need another format, toponym Association, or Association Toponym.

As you might have noticed, I'm not only editing football articles, but also cycling, ice hockey, handball+++ And as of late, I must say I'm starting to be a bit confused. Different projects follow different "guidelines", some of them actually being in conflict with Wikipedia policies and guidelines.

I suspect you're referring to the moves of Norwegian women's football teams; Amazon Grimstad, Arna-Bjørnar, Fortuna Ålesund, Team Strømmen and Trondheims-Ørn. I used WP:COMMONNAME as reason for moving these articles. I believe that clubs with "nicknames", don't need their different "sports club"-abbreviations, as they never or rarely use them.

I can see the point you're making on consistency, where you link to Category:English football clubs as an example. It looks neat, I must say, and I can understand why User:Alaney2k wants to change all European hockey clubs, to xxx HC (see discussions: Spellings and Disambiguation). I suppose you side with me on that discussion, since you're already reacting to my use of WP:COMMONNAME.

The problem with consistency in Category:Norwegian football clubs, is that there are none. English football clubs, almost with no exceptions use F.C. or A.F.C.. But Norwegian football clubs uses so many different abbreviations (BK, FC, FF, FK, IF, IK, IL, SK, SPK, TIF, UIL), both before the club name and after, some uses Fotball or Toppfotball, some a combination of the sport and an abbreviation, and some uses none of the previous (i.e. Hamarkameratene and ODD Grenland).

So using WP:COMMONNAME, where available, would give us a better consistency, than including an abbreviation which almost never is being used. (As in FK Mandalskameratene, I didn't know they had an abbreviation, until I started editing in Wikipedia.) By using WP:COMMONNAME, we avoid the hiding of abbreviation in articles, and also the many redirects provided by the current naming convention.

Here's a list on some of the clubs I would apply WP:COMMONNAME to:

• FK Athene Moss --> Athene Moss
• FK Bodø/Glimt --> Bodø/Glimt
• Drøbak/Frogn IL --> Drøbak/Frogn
• SK Gjøvik-Lyn --> Gjøvik-Lyn
• Kvik Halden FK --> Kvik Halden
• Larvik Turn & IF --> Larvik Turn
• FK Mandalskameratene --> Mandalskameratene
• Nybergsund IL-Trysil --> Nybergsund-Trysil
• SK Vard Haugesund --> Vard Haugesund

If you'd rather side with Alaney2k, and give them all FC-suffixes, I would be rather disappointed, but it is the only way to create full consistency on this issue. I believe that applying WP:COMMONNAME would be the second most effective way to achieve any consistency at all. It will only be used were there are little chance of misinterpretation (like not using Rosenborg, since this also can refer to the part of Trondheim were the club is originally from). The reason I didn't update the links directly after the move, was because I wanted to sort out the athletics bit to Kongsvinger IL first. This was done by User:Ters the day after, the only problem was that he moved it to Kongsvinger Idrettslag, which meant I couldn't move it to its correct namespace without an administrator's action. So I decided to wait until the weekend, when I had more time. Thankfully you did it this morning, and I have now corrected all wikilinks! Out-of-process move of Category:Cross-country Skiing World Cup

I see that on 23 November you created Category:FIS Cross-Country World Cup, and blanked Category:Cross-country Skiing World Cup.

You may or may not be right that the new category is more appropriately titled, but whatever the merits of the renaming, you should not have done it in this way. Because changes to categories impact on a lot of articles and are very hard to reverse, there is a process for seeking consensus before such moves, called Wikipedia:Categories for discussion (WP:CFD for short). That way, other editors have a chance to raise any concerns which they may have about the proposed change.

For any further situations where you think a category should be renamed, or deleted, or merged with another category, please nominate the category at WP:CFD and explain your reasons for the proposed change. It's not difficult to do — full instructions are at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion#Procedure, and if you use WP:TWINKLE, it will do most of the process automatically for you. This may seem like more work, but actually it isn't, because if here is a consensus to make the change, then bots do all the work.

On this occasion, I have speedily deleted the empty Category:Cross-country Skiing World Cup ... but please don't do it this way again.

Yeah, I know some of it was a bit copyrighted. That's why I added the source after every full stop. The flow in the paragraph was very good, and for a non-native speaker it is hard to re-write such a perfect paragraph, though I did change the transitions slightly. I actually knew you were going to check the article (and re-write some parts), and the article will be heavily edited in the near future, as well as after the matches have been played. Have you considered the renaming of Category:Presidents of UCI to Category:UCI Presidents? I didn't want to dive in again on your current proposal. It may be a different matter entirely. U21 teams

It's the fact that the page is U21 that makes it seem not redundant - if it was simply U19 and U17 then it would be redundant. I'm from America (where we do not classify sports teams like this), so correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that U19 refers to 18 and 17, U17 refers to 16 and 15, etc. U21 does not refer to everyone under 21, but only people from 19-21. If you believe it is redundant, marking if for deletion would me more appropriate. Originally I thought of renaming the template; {{Lyn Fotball squad}}, but found out that several players on the original bankrupt team still hadn't signed for "Nye" Lyn, or any other club. So I removed (and updated) the players who had signed for other clubs, and kept the remaining players in the template, so that I easily could access (and update) the player articles as they sign new contracts. The latest change I did was only to avoid the redirects, but on second thought it might be better to remove it from articles, and keep the template untranscluded... lil2mas (talk) 22:01, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Nice work on the roster templates

Definitely a positive contribution. I am curious, though, why you added categories to all of them that will more than likely never have anything else in them (except I guess the articles on the teams themselves, which, as an aside, are nearly universally total abominations). I deleted them from templates to which I made other edits, before noticing that they were on all of them. I'm also curious why you changed the colors for the BMC template, since they're supposed to represent the jersey, but that's not as important. Do you have other plans for those categories (bluelinking them if so?) What was behind dropping the "Team" from Sky, Movistar, Katusha, and especially RadioShack? Movistar and Katusha certainly seem to use the word "Team" in their UCI-registered names, it's just after the sponsor rather than before (which is especially curious for Katusha, since they were definitely registered as "Team Katusha" last year). And Team RadioShack most certainly does use that exact name. Sky I just reverted for the sake of matching the parent article. I certainly find it awkward that a team's name could have no fundamental change, yet be quite different from one year to the next.

It would be nice if we could come to some sort of consensus about this, but I don't think anyone's paying as much attention as you or I. Green-eyed girl (Talk · Contribs) 08:23, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
