WikiCup 2011 July newsletter edit

The finals are upon us; we're down to the last few. One of the eight remaining contestants will be this year's WikiCup champion! 150 was the score needed to progress to the final; just under double the 76 required to reach round 4, and more than triple the 41 required to reach round 3. Our eight finalists are:

  •   Casliber (submissions), Pool A's winner. Casliber has the highest total score in the competition, with 1528, the bulk of which is made up of 8 featured articles. He has the highest number of total featured articles (8, 1 of which was eligible for double points) and total did you knows (72) of any finalist. Casliber writes mostly on biology, including ornithology, botany and mycology.
  •   PresN (submissions), Pool B's winner and the highest scorer this round. PresN is the only finalist who has scored featured topic points, and he has gathered an impressive 330, but most of his points come from his 4 featured articles, one of which scored double. PresN writes mostly on video games and the Hugo Awards.
  •   Hurricanehink (submissions), Pool A's runner-up. Hurricanehink's points are mostly from his 30 good articles, more than any other finalist, and he is also the only finalist to score good topic points. Hurricanehink, as his name suggests, writes mostly on meteorology.
  •   Wizardman (submissions), Pool B's runner-up. Wizardman has completed 86 good article reviews, more than any other finalist, but most of his points come from his 2 featured articles. Wizardman writes mostly on American sport, especially baseball.
  •   Miyagawa (submissions), the "fastest loser" (Pool A). Miyagawa has written 3 featured lists, one of which was awarded double points, more than any other finalist, but he was awarded points mostly for his 68 did you knows. Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, including dogs, military history and sport.
  •   Resolute (submissions), the second "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Resolute's points come from his 9 good articles. He writes mostly on Canadian topics, including ice hockey.
  •   Yellow Evan (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool A). Most of Evan's points come from his 10 good articles, and he writes mostly on meteorology.
  •   Sp33dyphil (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Phil's points come from his 9 good articles, 4 of which (more than any other finalist) were eligible for double points. He writes mostly on aeronautics.

We say goodbye to our seven other semi-finalists,   Another Believer (submissions),   Piotrus (submissions),   Grandiose (submissions),   Stone (submissions),   Eisfbnore (submissions),   Canada Hky (submissions) and   MuZemike (submissions). Everyone still in the competition at this stage has done fantastically well, and contributed greatly to Wikipedia. We're on the home straight now, and we will know our winner in two months.

In other news, preparations for next year's competition have begun with a brainstorming thread. Please, feel free to drop by and share any thoughts you have about how the competition should work next year. Sign ups are not yet open, but will be opened in due course. Watch this space. Further, there has been a discussion about the rule whereby those in the WikiCup must delcare their participation when nominating articles at featured article candidates. This has resulted in a bot being created by new featured article delegate Ucucha (talk · contribs). The bot will leave a message on FAC pages if the nominator is a participant in the WikiCup.

A reminder of the rules: any points scored after August 29 may be claimed for the final round, and please remember to update submission pages promptly. If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi BilCat, good to see you. I am running for MILHIST coordinatorship, having just added my name at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators/September 2011. Are you running as well? Hope to see some of your comments about me. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 08:07, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

AV-8B things to check edit

Hi Phil. In the last line of this edit, HJ has asked for checks of a few things he's changed. The changes needing checks are marked in his edit summaries in the history of the article. They all look fine to me, in that I think what he's changed them to are indeed the meaning intended, but I wanted someone more familiar with the material to check them over as well. Could you have a look, and reply here/there/somewhere? Thanks --Demiurge1000 (talk) 09:33, 10 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

There is a mop reserved in your name edit

I have observed some remarkable contributions from this account. I am curious, why are you not an administrator. Pardon that you have struck me as the kind of editor who could be a good one, and that you seem qualified by a cursory review. You exemplify the essence of an Administrator without tools! I hope you will consider serving in the fuller capacity.

My76Strat (talk) 07:07, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

What a great thing to hear, especially coming from an established user like yourself My76Strat :). To answer your question, I've been thinking about becoming an admin for a few weeks now, because I'm ready to move on from writing articles and working more behind the scenes. You might not have noticed, but I'm not as well-versed in engaging others about maintenance aspects as I am with writing articles. To alleviate this problem, which might become a big issue should I go for adminship right now, I've started to participate more in AFDs more often during the last month (see my contributions and look for particularly the percentages). I need to do immerse myself in the admin environment first before I can even think about nominating myself (it'll better if someone else nominates me) for the mop. I hope to be ready to take the plunge by the end of January next year. Again, thanks for your warmest of messages, and yeah, I hope I will finally lay my hands for one of those mops. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 07:20, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
You are definitely on the right track, and you have a very good attitude about it. Regardless that I personally believe you are already qualified, what matters most is your own comfort level. And some of your reservations are genuinely valid. Like I said there is one with your name on it, when you put your hands on it will be your decision. When you decide that you are ready, you can request for someone to consider nominating you at WP:RRN. I hope to see WP:ALTRFA functioning by years end, and if so, it will just be another option for you to consider. By all means, God speed. Best - My76Strat (talk) 07:32, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
If I go for adminship, you'll be the third person I ask to participate in the event. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 07:42, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Be cautious of asking people to participate! For sure someone will accuse WP:CANVASS. Don't worry about telling me, I will know as soon as you transclude it. Or the very next time I login after. My76Strat (talk) 07:48, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Right, be careful about asking people in general ahead of time for help, but don't worry about asking anyone who brought the subject up on your talk page. - Dank (push to talk) 14:23, 14 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Please let me know as well, whenever you decide to try for adminship. It won't be canvassing to let me know. – Quadell (talk) 12:04, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Aviation articles edit

I'm frustrated too ... I see a lot of activity in aviation articles, but we're kind of stuck until we get more aviation people working on each other's articles, and that just doesn't seem to be happening in Milhist's A-class review. You asked me to ask people to get moving ... but I've found that doesn't work well on Wikipedia; people get interested when they get interested, so the only things that seem to work well around here are hard work and patience. My two cents is: try putting some of your articles up at Aviation's A-class review (and I'll help with reviews), and try helping other aviation people out with their articles, for instance, articles that are up for GAN ... that might inspire them to help you out. - Dank (push to talk) 14:28, 14 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

RE: Article creations edit

Hello. The minor planet articles are listed by the hundred and groups of ten of them are concatenated into longer lists. As to their notability, outside of potentially hazardous and trans-Neptunian objects, most smaller minor planets, particularly those of the main belt, are, I agree, not of great importance. Many are technically unremarkable yet still have received names; the names are arbitrary designations which make reference easier. The names are also primarily up to the whims of the discoverer(s). The page on common article deletion discussion outcomes says only

Asteroids and comets are acceptable e.g. List of asteroids, List of non-periodic comets, and List of periodic comets.

Under these guidelines I have been operating to complete Wikipedia's record on the minor planets. --Merovingian (T, C, L) 03:12, 15 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have just tagged a host of these. By Merovingian's own words, these are un-notable objects. I thought I was tagging good-faith article creations, but I see you have already brought this issue up to Merovingian and even suggested a reasonable alternative: making a list or adding to an existing one. Wikipedia cannot possibly be a catalog of every astronomical object discovered. I'll likely be putting these up for either speedy deletion or AfD soon. Have you got any further suggestions, Sp33dy? AstroCog (talk) 18:59, 25 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, thinking about it, I think they should be nominated for deletion, because they're not notable (fails WP:GNG). However, please leave the possibility of bringing them together under one article (as a list maybe) wide open. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 23:00, 25 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
There's hundreds of them. Can they all be nominated at the same AfD page? AstroCog (talk) 23:15, 25 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
I don't think that's a bright idea – it'll clog up the logs. I'd propose them for deletion, if I were you; quick, smart and easy, and uncontroversial :) Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 23:23, 25 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for reviewing new articles. Please be aware that foreign-language articles are not considered to be patent nonsense and should normally be tagged {{notenglish}} and listed at WP:PNT. However, I have deleted this article as an advert. Stifle (talk) 10:21, 15 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. I tried to write from a neutral point of view. Are there any particular lines that you can recommend revising in order to save the page? (LCPR (talk) 04:12, 17 September 2011 (UTC))Reply

Fremantle and Fremantle (suburb) edit

Hi, I feel like I'm fighting a war with bots here - and they wonder why newbies are leaving in droves! The two articles have entirely different scopes - the (suburb) one is focused on one small bit (in geographic terms) and has a decidedly more local focus, whilst the main article is focused on the whole thing. I'd actually written this on the talk page before you went through. This is becoming increasingly standard for places in Australia - eg Perth, Western Australia and Perth (suburb). The situation's been rectified now but could you please look at the settings for whatever tool you're using to identify these things - I mean, it doesn't bother me all too much as a going-on-6-year editor, but it would probably stop newbies from wanting to contribute. Orderinchaos 11:59, 16 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I don't think it's worth duplicating info on a subject which isn't as notable as Perth. For the record, it seems like Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane are the only areas that have both suburb (CBD) and city articles. Searches on Ballarat, Geelong, Gold Coast and the lesser major towns only yield one article for each of them. I think Fremantle isn't classified as a state capital, so IMHO it shouldn't have two duplicated articles. Also, I see that the coordinates, area (which is small), population etc. are virtually similar, which contradicts your claim that the suburb article documents a smaller geographical area. This might confuse some readers, and will split the effort of other editors. Lastly, can you please explain your last sentence? Cheers Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 13:38, 16 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
In response to your main point here - we have two schema, one being cities and one being suburbs, with for example East Fremantle or South Fremantle having curiously more coverage by default than the CBD in spite of the CBD being more notable. From a reader perspective, why is this so? In fact, I was asked this exact question by someone the other day. It's as if we're saying the CBD of Fremantle is somehow less important *because* it is a CBD. If you read enough Australian city articles, you get a sense that they suffer from a split personality as they're sort of trying to cover both and getting very confused. You say the populations are "virtually similar", but I fail to see how 7,000 and 25,000 are similar - one is almost four times the other. You mention the Gold Coast but the Gold Coast's CBD, Surfers Paradise, Queensland, has its own article. It makes little sense to suggest it is more notable because it has a different name. And lastly, about splitting effort, the Fremantle article is already largely complete, so is actually difficult to contribute to beyond maintenance, whereas the Fremantle (suburb) article is a stub and hence can be a seed for further growth as we now have active interest in the area due to the Wikipedia Takes Fremantle activity tomorrow from non-Wikipedians. Read some of the editor research and this is borne out.
With regards to my last point, in my view, you handled this poorly. What would have been wrong with engaging in a little dialogue on the talk page or on the user's talk page rather than going straight to the "CSD A10" and intimidating notice stage? If I had have been a newbie, I would have felt that my contributions were undervalued and perhaps not come back. The editor survey is clear that the biggest group we are losing is non-vandal newbies, and at Wikimania we discussed the impact of the "bot" mentality of Wikipedians as being a big factor in this - it's needed for some things, but this wasn't one of them. Orderinchaos 14:07, 16 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for my ignorance, and, as you said, I was wrong about the population (silly me). Can you explain to me how the area difference between Fremantle (5.6 km2) and Fremantle (suburb) (5.6 km2) correlates to a population difference of nearly 17,000? Before I tagged the latter for SD, I looked at the infoboxes of both articles and saw that they were basically the same (except for the pop. diff), which led me to tag it for CSD A10. BTW, when I saw that the creator of the suburb article was a sysop, and with more than 50,000 edits, I went oh oh. Sorry about my action, but I at the time it occurred strongly to me that this was indeed a duplicate because of I wasn't aware of the apparent guideline. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 14:39, 16 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Eh, these things happen, I was more concerned about method than the content issue. Yeah the separation was done hastily, the area on the bigger Fremantle article should be more (I'll fix that when WP starts behaving normally again, I can't access my own talk page right now :/.) Hopefully once I get back from tomorrow's festivities activities, we'll have a few more eyes on the Fremantle pages so can sort out the anomalies. Orderinchaos 14:48, 16 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Richwales 2 edit

It's bad form to ask five questions at a single RfA. We're not testing candidates over every single little detail. Not to mention that your questions are vague in what they're asking for. Are you going to oppose if they disagree with you on Q10, or if they don't write down every single mental process in Q9? Q12 is especially misleading—do you want them to say histmerge because they read it as a copy-paste move, or did you mean that it was copied from an external source?

If you want to ask questions at RfA, please limit yourself to the one or two most important ones and ensure that you are wording them well. That is, unless you want to trip up the candidate, in which case, just don't bother asking questions at all. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 19:05, 18 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kudpung, thanks for your message. I don't have any problem with understanding WP:NPP, but I'm taking an indefinite break from new page patrolling, as I think my views on the standards that should be expected from new content are not quite the same as the community's right now, and I'd rather get back to creating content of my own. Your speedy deletion request had been dealt with before I logged in again. If you read the article you will see that it cites two eminent sources, one of which states (as quoted) that King was one of the ten best players of his day in the 1750s. That underlines his notability. If you have doubts about the sources, and this applies to other projects also, I suggest you raise a question on the WikiProject talk page before turning to the deletion process. ----Jack | talk page 18:10, 23 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Removal of cats edit

We appear to have a problem in that you seem to be removing cats quicker than I can add them? not sure why you think multi-engine is a parent cat it has always been used for aircraft with more than one engine. If it is a parent cat then what do you suggest we use for twin-engined aircraft? On another note you are adding the introduced in cats which I understand we said we would not use on aircraft, thanks. MilborneOne (talk) 08:53, 27 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

The cat says "This is a container category. Due to its scope, it should contain only subcategories."; I don't know how you interpret it but I think it means it should not directly contain articles; I suggest you create separate cat for twin-engine aircraft. To answer your last point I wasn't aware that there was a discussion on this and that a few articles already had them. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 09:32, 27 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Interview with Wikimedia Foundation edit

Hello, Sp33dyphil. You have new messages at Matthew (wmf)'s talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Hi Sp33dy, Hope this finds you well. I'm a Storyteller on the fundraising team at the Wikimania Foundation. In preparation for the 2011 fundraiser this November-December, I'm interviewing Wikipedians who contribute significantly to the projects. In the past, we've relied pretty heavily on Jimmy to carry the fundraising burden, and while his appeals have done very well, he alone doesn't represent the multitude of content creators on Wikipedia. I'm curious if you would like to interview with me? I would hope to speak with you for about 60 minutes and would ask you a number of questions about your personal experiences editing on Wikipedia and about its impact more generally. If you are inclined, please email mroth (at) wikimedia.org. Thanks! Matthew (WMF) 23:51, 27 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

What an offer! Yes, I'm willing to have a interview with the Foundation. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 03:53, 28 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Excellent, can you email me mroth (at) wikimedia.org and we'll set up a time? Cheers! Matthew (WMF) 21:43, 28 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your Comments edit

Phil, Thanks for your feedback regarding my withdrawal from the coordinator election. I appreciate your candor and see the truth of statement. It is quite true that I have not been participating in the project discussions as much as I could. Upon some consideration, I think that should increase my participation in project discussions and who knows I might even contribute something productive. Regardless, thanks for the feedback.LeonidasSpartan (talk) 07:37, 28 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Main page appearance: Northrop YF-23 edit

This is a note to let the main editors of Northrop YF-23 know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on September 30, 2011. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/September 30, 2011. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

The Northrop YF-23 was a single-seat, twin-engine fighter aircraft designed for the United States Air Force (USAF). In the 1980s, the USAF began looking for a replacement for its fighter aircraft, especially to counter the USSR's advanced Su-27 and MiG-29. Several companies submitted design proposals; the USAF selected proposals from Northrop and Lockheed. Northrop teamed with McDonnell Douglas to develop the YF-23, while Lockheed, Boeing and General Dynamics developed the YF-22. The YF-23 was stealthier and faster, but less agile than the competition. After a four-year development and evaluation process, the YF-22 was announced the winner in 1991 and entered production as the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. The U.S. Navy considered using one of the ATF aircraft types to replace the F-14, but later canceled these plans. The two YF-23 prototypes were on exhibit in museums as of 2009. (more...)

Congratulations! edit

I am pleased to inform you that you have been elected as a coordinator of the Military history WikiProject. Congratulations on your achievement, and thank you for volunteering!

Discussions of our plans for the coming year will no doubt begin in the next few days. In the meantime, please make sure that you have the coordinators' discussion page on your watchlist, as most of the relevant activity happens there. If you have not already done so, you may want to read the relevant courses in the project academy, as well as the discussion page and its recent archives.

If you have any questions about your work as a coordinator, or anything else, please don't hesitate to ask me directly. Kirill [talk] [prof] 02:03, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

KC-10 edit

Responded on my talk page and also wanted to note that I have looked over the article. It may sound strange, but I have always made it a point NOT to look too much into the KC-10 article before because I always knew that if I did, I would want to work on it (regardless of whether or not I actually had time to.) It definitely needs some work, but I'm too tired tonight to really quantify that thought. First thing that DOES pop out is the "incidents" section which I have already boldly removed. The KC-10 has had a very accident-free track record, but even if it didn't, I don't see the need for such a section. We don't have an "incidents" section for the Honda Accord for every time someone dies behind the wheel of one. Unless there is a VERY notable reason why the aircraft itself, through a reason such as design flaw, contributed to someone's death, I fail to see a reason to specifically examine it within the article. I will look at it some more tomorrow. Trusilver 06:53, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I've definitely changed my mind. It's been a couple years since my last encounter with the esteemed members of the Aviation Wikiproject, and I had forgotten their nasty tendency to own articles.[2] I'm happy to read over the article and give my input as a pilot of said aircraft, but I really have no interest in participating in the actual article itself. I will simply be lurking in the background as needed. Trusilver 15:38, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

McDonnell XF-85 Goblin edit

Phil, my guess is the delegates are going to want someone to do "spotchecks", wiki-jargon for checking the article against some of the sources for accuracy and (lack of) close paraphrasing. Which sources are available at least in "snippet view" at Google Books? - Dank (push to talk) 20:21, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry Dank, I'm afraid that there aren't any books available for snippet view at Google Books. I believe that I've written the article very well to avoid any form of copyright infringement – I summarised what I read before rewriting them, and then Bzuk and yourself come along and give it some expansion and touchup, so a chance of infringement being present is almost nil. In any case, I'll go over the article again to make sure. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 22:52, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Right, I hope I'm not giving the impression that I think there's anything shady about your writing, I'm just dealing with FAC realities here ... for anyone who's new or relatively new at FAC, "spotchecks" are needed to pass, and that means someone other than you has to compare at least some of the sources against the current article text ... and it's not just a yes/no, copyright infringement or not kind of check, it's also to get a general sense of whether someone reading the article will take away the same information as if they had read the sources. Probably, some people who have read my notice at WT:MIL about this FAC will have the books, and I'll ask over at WT:AV as well. - Dank (push to talk) 23:26, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
No, I'm not offended – I understand where you're coming from. I hope the spotchecks will pass with flying colours. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 23:30, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2011 September newsletter edit

We are on this year's home straight, with less than a month to go until the winner of the 2011 WikiCup will be decided. The fight for first place is currently being contested by   Miyagawa (submissions),   Hurricanehink (submissions) and   Sp33dyphil (submissions), all of whom have over 200 points. This round has already seen multiple featured articles (1991 Atlantic hurricane season from Hurricanehink and Northrop YF-23 from Sp33dyphil) and a double-scoring featured list (Miyagawa's 1948 Summer Olympics medal table). The scores will likely increase far further before the end of the round on October 31 as everyone ups their pace. There is not much more to say- thoughts about next year's competition are welcome on the WikiCup talk page or the scoring talk page, and signups will open once a few things have been sorted out.

Image Copyright Questions edit

Hello! I just wanted to ask something small. How should I add copyright information to pictures taken by myself? I have taken a photo of the GE90 and I thought I might share it :) ! EmadIV (talk) 16:30, 2 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Firstly, to answer your question, have you uploaded the photo yet onto Commons? TBO, it's quite easy to release the photo freely, you just choose one of the many copyright (or copyleft) options when you download it, depending on whether you want others to: attribute the work to you as they distribute it however they like, even commercially (CC-BY); release derivative works of your photo under the same license as yours (CC-SA); or both of the above (CC-BY-SA). I think there are more subcategories to it, but I can't remember. Anyhow, please make sure that your photo is free and it suits Wikipedia's (or WikiCommons) criteria, that is, it must be free for public (that includes commercial) consumption. For more information, please see license selection and reusing content outside Wikipedia. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 22:13, 2 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Alt text for Project A119 images edit

Hi Sp33dyphil. You requested the addition of alt text to the images on Project A119 as part of its A-class review. I've added text to each of the three images, as you can see here. I'm pretty unfamiliar with alt text in general though, especially when trying to reach a standard this high, so I was wondering if these descriptions are adequate or if you feel they need to be changed at all. Thanks for your time. GRAPPLE X 22:53, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I see you tagged Gregory S. Rosen. Closer examination would have revealed that the footnote is not a reference. Please be sure to place a WP:BLPPROD tag on such unreferenced BLPs. Thanks. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:11, 4 October 2011 (UTC) (edit conflict) Why isn't it a ref?Reply

Umm, that footnote is a reference. It is not a reliable source, but BLPPROD does not require the source to be reliable – a generic PROD would be more appropriate. I will be removing the BLPPROD tag after leaving this note. Jenks24 (talk) 05:17, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
It's not a source. It's a mere mention of the subjetc's publication that could just as easily have been incorporated in the prose flow of the body text of the article. But I'm not here to argue with you, I'm doing research into possible improvements both of the BLPPROD and NPP systems, and how to make the work easier for patrollers. ACR closure edit

Hi mate, hope you don't mind me stalking, great you're getting into this duty, especially when it's with one of my noms... ;-) Just a few things:

  1. At the top of the review page you should sign the result (e.g. Promoted -- ~~~~)
  2. On Lukis' page your three dashes towards the end were indented a space so caused a bit of odd formatting
  3. Unless you had to take a break and just haven't got to these yet, don't forget listing at the A-Class Articles page, updating (or starting) this month's Bugle A/FA articles page, updating the ACM eligibility tracking page and, if required ( not in Lukis' case I don't think) the ACM nom.

All the above are in the collapsible section A-Class review/reappraisal closure instructions for coordinators on the A-Class review page. I've been doing this for yonks, and still find it best to have those instructions open on a spare tab for reference while I perform the steps. BTW, got a feeling you may not have put a result or signed another ACR you closed (perhaps closed w/o consensus) not long ago but I forgot to mention it at the time, so you might want to check back and add the result and fake the signature timestamp to when you actually closed it... Link rot edit

How do i address link rot on my page 747 Wing House — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carsonl87 (talkcontribs) 21:28, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

You reference the refs properly, so they include things like titles, publishers, date of access, date of publication, etc; see WP:REF.
A quick way to address this issue, if you have the Vector skin, is to go to User:Sp33dyphil/vector.js, copy and paste that into User:Carsonl87/vector.js. When you're done, go to the 747 Wing House and at the left, there'll be a list of links in the toolbox, and one of them is "Reflinks". Click on it and the script will do the rest, although you do need to press save. When finished, make sure to go over the refs that somehow haven't been refed by the script, and do it manually. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 22:04, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
The correct and easiest way to address linkrot is to read WP:CITE. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:07, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, those are scripts that I use, so please don't use them unless you know what you're doing and how refs work. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 05:16, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Tagging edit

Hi Sp33dyphil, I appreciate your vigilance, but in general before tagging to death an article minutes after birth, please allow at least a few days for the author(s) to develop it. Benevolo is one of the most notable architectural and urban historians of the 20th century, and has articles on five other Wikipedias. In my limited time I was simply starting to close a gap in Wikipedia's coverage bias. I'm afraid that this kind of quick tagging discourages contributions. --Elekhh (talk) 23:26, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker)An article that is going to take 'a few days' to develop should be developed in user space where it will avoid the danger of being deleted, and this is what we should be encouraging users to do. . The number of new articles that might get developed, is so great that there is a risk that not tagging them will leave them forgotten, and undeveloped by their author. Common sense will tell us on a case-by-case basis if we should wait 15 minutes oe 1 hour before tagging an A1 or an A3, or even delete them instantly. Other tags, if applied quickly enough, may draw the creator's attention to the problems (as it did with Elekhh) while they are still online and logged in. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:05, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Agree with Kudpung. Most Wikipedians never assist in their creation's growth, leading to an encyclopedia full of tags. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 01:10, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sorry but have to disagree. Placing tags between my edits do not help me in any way. While for me these tags are just distracting, for new editors are discouraging. I don't think it helps Wikipedia either, as overall is incoherent when lack of notability is claimed for highly notable subjects while barely notable ones are unquestioned only because there is quantitatively more referencing of whatever nature. I think some basic research would be useful before tagging articles. Regarding how to start an article, I always have been developing articles in article space as Wikipedia supposed to be a collaborative project, and this allows other editors to contribute. Writing my "own" articles in a private sandbox has no appeal for me, but thanks for your advice. --Elekhh (talk) 03:47, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker)Wholeheartedly agree with Elekhh, especially in this specific case. — CharlieEchoTango — 04:06, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
The tags weren't meant to help you, they were supposed to alert others that there is a possible non-encyclopediac article. You might not know how hard it is, but there are only a handful of people patrolling the NP log, so naturally we are very critical of all and every page. When I tagged your article, the intro sentence was "Leonardo Benevolo (25 September 1923) is an Italian architectural and urban historian." I didn't see any reason *not* to tag it, as it was no different from a lot of articles that don't assert the significance of their subjects, not to mention hoaxes, etc. I thought the article could be developed further, but I was still suspicious because the sentence didn't say why the person was notable/important, so I tagged it for lead too short and notability. Otherwise I would have PROD it, instead of CSD (CSD A7 says "No indication of importance -- an article about a real person, individual animal(s), organization, or web content that does not indicate why its subject is important or significant".) Us new -page patrollers don't have all day to wait for articles to develop, because there are heaps of others that are slipping through the flimsy cracks. If only you had indicated why he was important, I would have marked it as "patrolled" and moved on straight away. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 04:25, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
There were however interlanguage links, incoming links and google hits. In any case thanks for explaining how the system works. Will keep that in mind, and start articles with more substantial intro. I do appreciate a lot notability patrolling, and have no intention to make your work any harder than it already is. --Elekhh (talk) 04:54, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Good thing we cleared that up. For my part, I will be more easy on those that have stayed here for long and racked up heaps of edits. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 05:13, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
@Elekhh: As a regular editor with over 12,000 edits, you may even wish to consider helping out with patrolling new pages. The instructions are at WP:NPP - a system we're currently working very hard on with the WMF to improve. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:17, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

@Kudpung, while we're at it, can you explain to me why my CSD tag (A9) on On the Old Fall River Line was rejected? Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 05:19, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Incidentally, with exactly fifty articles created, Elekhh might well be a good choice to have the autopatrolled userright. This would save time for new page patrollers, and (in instances like the above) for Elekhh as well. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 13:29, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sp33dyphil|, Your CSD tag (A9) on On the Old Fall River Line was declined because the criterion clearly did not apply. You should know that by now after the number of times I've suggested you read WP:NPP and WP:CSD ;) Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 09:08, 8 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I think it's useful to answer new page patrollers' questions, not just repeatedly imply that they might not have read something that they should have done :)
Phil, my guess is that the issue is that criterion A9 only applies to "musical recordings", and On the Old Fall River Line is (supposedly) a song rather than a recording (despite half the lead talking about a recording). What's the difference, you might ask. Well, the distinction seems to be rather confused. For example, Hurt (Johnny Cash song) is arguably a recording, not a song; and that link is a redirect to Hurt (Nine Inch Nails song), which is an article about a song written by Trent Reznor, but the article's two infoboxes, and most of its sections, are not about the song, but are about recordings of the song as performed by the aforementioned Johnny Cash and Nine Inch Nails.
I had to strain my brain to think of a plausible hypothetical use of A9, but here's an attempt. Paparazzi (Lady Gaga song) is a song written by Lady Gaga and Rob Fusari - even though the article seems to be about the recording, not the song (I'm starting to see a pattern here...) Now, Greyson Chance became famous by doing a recording of that song (performed by himself), and posted it on YouTube on April 28, 2010. The article about Chance himself was only created May 12, 2010 (let's ignore any short-lived previous versions, for the sake of our example). If someone had tried to make an article about Chance's recording of Gaga's song, before May 12, and didn't indicate why the recording is important or significant, then that article would have been eligible for deletion under criterion A9, since it would be an article about a musical recording (not the song, which is Gaga's) for which no article existed for the artist. As soon as the article for the artist (Chance) was created on May 12, A9 would no longer be valid for the recording. (Another criterion might still be valid - unremarkable web content or something, perhaps).
To put this another way, criterion A9, like many of the criteria, is, intentionally, extremely limited in what it can be used for. If, this afternoon, I write the "New Page Patrol is so much fun" song, and created an article about it, that article would not be eligible for A9, because it's an article about a song, not about a musical recording. Hopefully it would be eligible for some other criterion... --Demiurge1000 (talk) 10:44, 8 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK, to make sure I don't commit the same sin the second time, I'll steer well clear of A9. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 23:43, 8 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to the Wikipedia Ambassador Program edit

Hi Sp33dyphil!

Congratulations! Your application to join the Global Education Program as an Online Ambassador has been accepted. The steps you need to take now, a few things you need to read, are bolded.

When you get a chance, please add your username to the official list of Online Ambassadors and add a profile for yourself here (which helps match Online Ambassadors with classes in their areas of interest).

Here are some things you should know to help you get started:

The role of the Online Ambassador edit

The main role of for an Online Ambassador is to join the "pod" for one or more participating classes. The pod is the team of people helping a class of students contribute effectively to Wikipedia, consisting of the course instructor, the local Campus Ambassadors who will work with the class in person, the Online Ambassadors who work with the class online, and the Regional Ambassador for the pod who will check in periodically with the pod to make sure everything is going well.

A prototypical pod might look something like this:

  • An instructor who is fairly new to Wikipedia, leading a class of 20 students assigned to make significant contributions to new or existing articles related to the course subject.
  • Two Campus Ambassadors, one of whom is an experienced Wikipedian and one of whom is new to Wikipedia. The Campus Ambassadors will have gone through a training program on the basics of Wikipedia and how to help students contribute effectively.
  • Two Online Ambassadors, one moderately experienced on Wikipedia and one very experienced, who can answer basic questions and give good editing advice and find others to help when they get in over their heads, one of whom has a particular interest in the subject area of the course.
  • One Regional Ambassador, a moderately experienced Wikipedian who is working with 15 different pods spread across a big geographical region.

(That's an idealization, but it gives you an idea of the spectrum of people in each of the roles in the program.)

The expections for an Online Ambassador in a pod (and what you can expect from other pod members) are laid out in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between pod members. In short the role of the Online Ambassador is to:

  • Help students in your class(es) when they ask for it, answer their questions, and generally watch out for them
  • Help students to get feedback on their work (whether from you or other editors an interest in / knowledge of the subject area)
  • Be a good example for students, modeling good wiki communication and editing practices
  • Communicate regularly with the other members of your pod about how things are going and problems are coming up

To join a pod, go to the MOU signup page, which lists the courses for the current term, and leave your signature in one of the Online Ambassador slots for the pod you want to join.

You can also help as an Online Ambassador outside of your role as a pod member, anywhere you see students who could use help. Feedback on the substance (rather than style and formatting) of student articles, in particular, is always a need.

If you use IRC, please consider adding #wikipedia-en-ambassadors and #wikipedia-en-classroom to your channel lineup. The latter is the main help channel for the program, where students and instructors come from time to time in search of live help.

Wikipedia Ambassadors are expected to follow the Wikipedia Ambassadors Principles. Please review them.

Communication channels edit

There are three main places for news, updates and discussion about Wikipedia Ambassadors and the Global Education Program:

  1. Wikipedia talk:Ambassadors
  2. The Ambassador Program announcements list, which all ambassadors should join. It is a low-traffic email list that is only used for significant announcement that are relevant to the whole program. Please sign up as soon as you get a chance.
  3. The Wikipedia Ambassadors Google Group, a discussion list shared by Online Ambassadors and Campus Ambassadors. It's not required, but it's strong recommended and most of the ambassadors are on it. Request to join the Wikipedia Ambassadors Google Group if you would like access.

Newsletters about the program, or messages for Online Ambassadors particularly, may be delivered to your talk page on occasion.

Thanks for volunteering as a Wikipedia Ambassador! If you have any questions, please let me know.

What made me check was the fact that he did not sign his post, and the bot signed it with an IP address. That meant I had to check that IP for possible block evasion edits - which in this instance is not the case. He did a lot of good work but also has a significant block log. These are tricks of the trade of being a good patroller - there's more to NPP than just looking at a new page and pasting some tags ;) It's detective work really - it helps to catch long term vandals and socks. Play Misty For Me edit

Hi Sp33dyphil. I recently finished correcting the formatting of several citations on the Play Misty for Me article. In doing so, I included in the citations all of the relevant information pertaining to the sources (books). There is also a section in the article titled Bibliography which has the same information about those books. After completing all of the work on fixing the citations I decided to remove the Bibliography section because, after my work, the reference section included all of the same information.

However, right after I finished this work, you undid all of it, and sent a message to me saying I removed content without specifying a reason. When in fact I entered this, "removed Bibliography sections as it is unnecessary now that citations are correct" as the reason. If you think that the Bibliography section needs to stay, then it can stay. But can you at least revert the page back to where all of my work on the citations is done? Best, DaffyBridge (talk) 00:21, 15 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about that, I didn't see your rationale. Anyone, I think the bibli needs to stay because the refs would be meaningless if there are no books or publications to tell the reader, for example, which book "Eliot (2009), p. 129" is referring to. Sorry for my mistake, and, happy editing! :) Sp33dyphil ©© 00:25, 15 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I had corrected the citation for "Eliot (2009), p. 129" so that it reflected all of the information in the bibliography. I did the same with each of the other citations. It doesn't show right now because you undid all of that work. I don't understand how because I did all of that before I removed the Bibliography section. I undid your 'undoing' so that you can see it. Please review it and if you still think it needs the Bibliography section, I will add it back in. DaffyBridge (talk) 00:31, 15 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I'm find with the current revision. Sorry for my action, is there anything you'd like me to do for you? Sp33dyphil ©© 00:34, 15 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
No, thank you for your understanding. Sorry if I sounded demanding; didn't mean to. I was just frustrated when I saw that all of my work disappeared.DaffyBridge (talk) 01:10, 15 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please use some restraint at Commoditization edit

Hi. It looks like you have been busy doing good things by patrolling for vandalism, but I fear that your reverts at Commoditization are having the effect of fanning the flames in a content dispute. Please restrain yourself there -- and encourage talk page discussion. Thanks! --Orlady (talk) 04:43, 16 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Parallax Propeller edit

I think your complete removal of material posted by user:173.13.137.221 was a bit hasty. In principle his edits were fine! At most you could have placed a few [citation needed] tags. What he wrote however was factually correct, and already covered by the given links, it certainly wasn't vandalism. I have asked the user to register, become aquainted to the rules and regulations of WP, and then try again. Mahjongg (talk) 13:07, 16 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for pointing that out, I wouldn't certainly have known that! When I looked at his edits (particularly at the end of paragraphs), I didn't see any refs. However, on closer inspection, I did see one of two cite templates which only indicate the title of certain publications; some other info were unrefed. Past experience tells me that IPs that have been reminded about large additions of unsourced text almost never come back to cleanup their work, so I decided to be a bit heavy-handed because we might not know that some of the info might be made-up. Obviously this is not the case to this article, but I hope my explanations give you somewhat of an insight into my perspective of the site. Sp33dyphil ©© 06:13, 17 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I certainly understand where your reasoning was coming from, and I also could see some "red flags" in the posts. Its only that I am somewhat familiar with the Parallax Propeller so that I could recognise that it wasn't nonsense what was posted. The only thing is that it would be hard to find a reference anywhere (that isn't a blog) that literally says the same thing, as its often worded in a different way. In that sense its more or less OR, but its still information that you can extract from the official documentation of the Propeller. Mahjongg (talk) 12:28, 17 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Need some help! edit

Thanks again for the IRC chat - also very helpful. What I need help with is This and was wondering if you could (with your privileges) accomplish what I had asked the user yourself. It seems that the user is inactive anyway, and it is a pet peeve of mine to get rid of wasted space in Backlog Persondata!. Thanks for your help and if this is completely confusing then just let me know and I will try and explain better. Thanks again! Touch Of Light (talk) 05:33, 28 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I'm not completely grasping what you're trying to say -- please explain further. :D --Sp33dyphil ©© 05:36, 28 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
In simpler terms - I need this page to be edited and this line of code in the page: SHORTDESCRIPTION: to be filled in with a period so the notice does not appear on the backlog. Little bit simpler? Maybe? Haha. Touch Of Light (talk) 05:48, 28 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid I can't help you there, since I have no admin privileges to edit protected articles. However, you can can to the IRC page I've informed you about and ask the many friendly admins who are ever-present online. Just a question, is the page in question a sandbox, or is there already an article that is in the mainstream? /EditCounterOptIn.js pages are supposed to be used for the edit pie when you go here, and should not used for nurturing new pages. If the user does not respond to your queries, please relax and not give a fuck -- a resolve will eventually be found -- and continue with some other articles. Cheers mate! --Sp33dyphil ©© 06:03, 28 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
In order to enable the edit counter thingummy, one needs to create one's "EditCounterOptIn.js" with any content. It seems that User:Jschauhan, in order to complete this task, created his EditCounterOptIn.js file by copying in (without attribution) a version of the article Nathuram Sharma, which is about an Indian fellow - a poet - who died in 1932.
Now, that article (and thus, now that .js file) contains a Persondata template. And User:Touch of Light is on a quest - itself worthy of epic poetry, no doubt - to remove this template from places where it shouldn't be. This .js file is one of those places.
Now, Touch Of Light, you've probably already been told this, but Sp33dyphil can't help with this; you need an administrator. I suggest you contact User:Fastily, who is at least slightly familiar with the owner of the .js file in question, since he blocked him a few weeks ago. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 06:01, 28 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I do not understand why you said i removed content. I added several colons whidh needed to be added. I added italic to the show The Five which I believe is needed also. I did move one segment (art auction) which is no longer daily because people started to win bids for the drawings and then not send in the money, so the show stopped doing that segment. Did you not see that I only moved this segment and did not remove the content? They complained on the show about people winning the bid but not paying, so they then stopped having the art auctions. I did remove the one word "progressive" from in front of Media Matters and the bolding that was placed on Media Matters because that much detail along with the footnote and unneeded bolding seemed to be promoting media matters on the Red Eye page for unknown reasons. I don't think it is necessary to go into that much detail about media matters on Red Eye page, when simply saying Memdia Matters will do for encyclopedia purposes on Red Eye, don't you agree? Is that the content you were referring to that I removed, the single word "progressive"? If that's the removed content you are referring to, then why did you get rid of all my many other helpful edits I made to improve the page, including 3 references which I added with great trouble? Couldn't you have left my helpful edits and just reinserted the one word "progressive" if you wanted that unnecessary qualifier to stay there? Or do you consider all these other edits not helpful to the page either? As far as I can see, there are lots of edits made all over the place with some actually removing real content without any comment about the edit as to why they did that edit and they are not changed they way you did to me? Please explain.--172.162.22.221 (talk) 07:26, 28 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Looking over your edits, I see that you've moved the section elsewhere instead of blanking it -- this is entirely my fault. However, you removed words and a hidden comment that about the word progressive without providing an explanation in the edit summary. If you think some of your other additions have been made in good faith, and particularly the three references (are they reliable though?), please go back to the article's history and reinstate those changes. Next time, it'll be good if you'd provide a helpful edit summary.--Sp33dyphil ©© 07:34, 28 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thankks for replying so fast. Just for the record, if you check the very resent edit history on Red Eye page, I originally removed the word "liberal" from in front of Media Matters with the edit comment "media matters is not liberal" and then someone came soon after my edit and added "progressive" and bolding and an unecessary reference and comment in the page. I really don't feel all that qualifing is really necessary on Red Eye page, so you can see I'm not trying to cause any trouble or be a pain, just trying to keep it very simple for the encyclopedia without adding unnecessary complications. I think you now can see I'm trying to be helpful here. As to the 3 references, I know they kinda suck, but for what they are trying to prove ~ sub-liminal messages ~ they are good enough (and as good as they are going to get) for that kind of silliness. --172.162.22.221 (talk) 07:49, 28 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

GOCE drive newsletter edit

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their November 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles (and specifically will be targeting the oldest three months), as we want to copy edit as many of these as possible. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters.

Led Zeppelin copyedit edit

Hi

I have been asked about the status of the Led Zeppelin copyedit. Have you completed it, or did you withdraw? The requests page simply has "working" crossed out, so I am unsure as to which path you have taken. Can you please reply on User_talk:Sabrebd#Led_Zeppelin_copyedit as they are the "main" regular editor and the one I have been discussing the ce with since the one I did a few months ago (we had some issues with the copyedit request as the IP editor put it up on the requests page while work was ongoing, indeed more than once).

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

No prize was awarded for featured pictures, sounds or portals, as none were claimed throughout the competition. The awards will be handed out over the next few days. Congratulations to all our participants, and especially our winners; we've all had fun, and Wikipedia has benefitted massively from our content work.

Preparation for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Interested parties are invited to sign up and participate in our straw polls. It's been a pleasure to work with you all this year, and, whoever's taking part in and running the competition in 2012, we hope to see you all in January! File permission problem with File:Aboard a Boeing 777 during Frankfurt flight .jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Aboard a Boeing 777 during Frankfurt flight .jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. Remember that RFCs are part of Dispute Resolution and at times may take place in a heated environment. Please take a look at the relevant RFC page before responding and be sure that you are willing and able to enter that environment and contribute to making the discussion a calm and productive one focussed on the content issue at hand. Re: A tool for you! edit

Hi, and thanks for the duplicate-links tool script. I noticed that, unlike the page-size tool, the duplicate links remain after you click the toolbox link again. Now I can't get page sizes any more on article sections by clicking "Page size" in section-edit-preview mode, and am unable to delete the duplicate-links script from my .js page to see if one may be interfering with the other. The same problem exists in Firefox and Chrome, so I don't think it's a browser thing. Is it working okay for you? All the best,--Miniapolis (talk) 03:25, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

The page size tool does work in preview mode, whether you're using duplicate-links tool or not. BTW, why would you want to use the page size tool in edit mode? --Sp33dyphil ©© 03:32, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
The only way to get the word count for a section (sometimes only a section is tagged for copyediting, not a whole article) is to go into edit mode, click on "Preview" and then on "Page size". That worked for me until recently.--Miniapolis (talk) 03:44, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Strange, it works perfectly for me for each section in edit mode, and I use Chrome. How come you can't remove the Duplinks script? Have you tried bypassing the browser's cache? --Sp33dyphil ©© 05:24, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

A Message From WikiProject: Barnstar Awarding edit

Hello, I am writing from WikiProject Barnstar Awarding. As a member of the project, I thought you may be interested in one of our new feature - a live news feed. Formally, any project news was displayed on the project page and any important messages (like this one) had to be idividualy delivered. We now, however, have a new feature - a news feed. The way this works is by the project having a news page (which can be found here). Users then place the following on their talk page

{{Wikipedia:WikiProject Barnstar Awarding/News}}

News will then be updated on your talk page (or anywhere else you decided to place this template). Please note that the new messages template will not be shown as news is updated.
We hope that you will help support this new feature and will add the template to your user space. Now this feature is in place, messages adressed to the whole WikiProject will no longer be individualy delivered.

Mexican state articles are very important, so feel free to check some others I have done such as Jalisco, Colima, Chiapas, Morelos, Veracruz and Puebla.Thelmadatter (talk) 19:43, 16 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Lex and Terry edit

So I see you improved on what I wrote in this article. I appreciate any help, and I'm looking for people to fix up the article again. I know there needs to be a section on the radio show's content, but the best source seems to be an article written in 1997, and I put what's there under "history". Some of that is probably valid information for a content section. And some of what's in that source is ... not exactly G-rated. I didn't even want to touch it even though I know Wikipedia is not censored.GeorgeFather (talkcontribs) 17:40, 17 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

GOCE drive newsletter edit

Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 backlog elimination drive update

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 46 people sign up for this drive so far, and 28 have copy edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't joined, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: We are making great progress in our goal of clearing out the oldest articles (April, May, and June 2010) from the queue. There are 122 articles left in those categories, which compares very favorably with the 281 that were present at the close of the September drive. We have reduced the 2010 backlog by 184 articles so far.

Coordinator elections: The term of our second tranche of coordinators will be running out at the end of the year, and we will be accepting nominations for new coordinators early in December. The election will likely run in the last two weeks of December. Please consider helping out by nominating yourself or someone else in the Guild as one of our coordinators. The commitment is for a six-month term. Thanks.

Your drive coordinators – Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02 and SMasters

Sonora editing work edit

Thanks for your efforts on this article!!!! I did some work with disambiguation and citation but to be honest, some I couldnt do (likes names of fish or what kind of paddleboats...)Thelmadatter (talk) 02:04, 20 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

No problems. That article took a loooong time to copy edit because of the sheer size of it :S . I thought I haven't done enough, but you seem to be very happy with it. If you have any other articles that you'd like me to copy edit, please tell me. Cheers! --Sp33dyphil ©©
I dont get the tag you just added to Sonora. My source doesnt say why they people are on the border like that, but my experience as a former AZ resident tells me most of them are there because either a) they dont have the money to get back home further south or b) are working on a way to try and cross the border again along with c) they just decided to stay because there are factories and stuff in that area. However, that's all sheer speculation as there hasn´t really been any study of the issue. All that is known is that they are there. Anyway.... my larger articles are usually the ones that need major copy edit. Because of the size and effort, the Spanish of my sources screws up my (native) English! Which has caused Manus to tag them as "machine translated" (happened twice! the first time with Oaxaca, long since fixed, mostly by Dr. Blofeld, and the second time with Sonora :D). My goal is to get all thirty one states in shape, at least content-wise as I figure that is the most useful thing I can do since I can read Spanish and live in Mexico. If youre looking for some I know could use work... Chiapas and Colima come to mind (especially Chiapas as its so much better known). Right now Im working on a Mexican art article, which shamefully does not exist in either English OR Spanish. Im no expert in the topic and its a slow go. That one will definitely need a going over, especially from an outsider's POV to make sure the content is complete and adequately explained. Ill let you know when it is up.Thelmadatter (talk) 08:40, 20 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

keep up the content work edit

Sorry, I had to slap you at your editor feedback and at Mallman's page.

I really meant what I said about you being one of the BEST new editors. Contributing content (info out of books) on high view topics is the most important thing at Wiki.

I meant the criticism as well. When someone gives you help, you should not mouth off to them. I know you are touchy about your age and don't like getting reprimanded. So, please don't take it too hard. But criticism stands.

I hope you will keep learning how to write better. Dig in and do some work. (Have you finished the Tony exercises yet?)

P.s. A330 is a damned good article GA++!  ;~)

E751 edit

Hi! I know it's not right to bypass the GOCE queue to get an article copyedited - I normally go there before any GAN, but this one seems to have slipped my attention in that respect - and review comments posted at Talk:European route E751/GA1 include problematic prose. The reviewer has already copyedited the article, but could you please take a look too?--Tomobe03 (talk) 23:03, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please make a request at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests so I can claim it for my word count. --Sp33dyphil ©© 07:13, 29 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Done. Thanks for volunteering.--Tomobe03 (talk) 09:24, 29 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the copyedit. I have tried to address two out of three clarification templates in the article, but I not sure what you meant by the remaining one in there. Could you please explain that, so that I may take care of that one as well?--Tomobe03 (talk) 11:47, 29 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK, the article doesn't start off with "The European route E751, or E751", but later in the article I see "The E751". Could you please make the article consistent? Thanks --Sp33dyphil ©© 23:36, 29 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid I don't see what's there to fix. The article now starts with "The European route E751, or E751" and all subsequent references to the route are "the E751" - what am I missing?--Tomobe03 (talk) 23:58, 29 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
It's all about consistency. The reader may probably ask why "European route E751" is not preceeded by the while "E751" does. Am I being unreasonable? --Sp33dyphil ©© 04:38, 30 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Small question edit

Hello Speedyphil. I have a little question: how do you set an image as the background on your userpage? I would like to set my background to an A330 image. Thanks —»εϻαdιν ΤαΙk Ͼδητrιβμτιoης 16:52, 30 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

This may be a bit complicated. You have to paste the following at the top of the page...

<div style="position: relative; height: 1%;">
 <div style="position: relative; margin: 0 -1em; padding: 0; background-color: transparent; border: 1px none #ddd; height: 1%;">
  <div style="position: relative; margin: 0 auto; width: 995px; border: 1px solid #4E562C; height: 1%;">
<div style="position: relative; overflow: hidden; height: 828px">[[:File:Sukhoi Su-35BM and Sukhoi T-50 Belyakov.jpg|1110px]]<nowiki><!-- Height of the main image -->
    <div style="position: relative; overflow: hidden; margin: 2;"></div>
   </div>
   <div style="position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 96%;">
    <div style="margin: 1em%;">

    </div>

... and the following at the bottom.

 </div>
   </span></div>
  </div>
 </div>
</div>

<div style="margin: 1em -1em 0;">
 <div style="width: 995px; margin: 0 auto;">
 </div>
</div>

Change the width pixels and image to suit your needs. --Sp33dyphil ©© 07:54, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Main page appearance: McDonnell XF-85 Goblin edit

This is a note to let the main editors of McDonnell XF-85 Goblin know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 6, 2011. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 6, 2011.

The McDonnell XF-85 Goblin was an American prototype fighter aircraft conceived during World War II by McDonnell Aircraft. It was intended to be carried in and deployed from the bomb bay of the giant Convair B-36 bomber as a parasite fighter. The XF-85's intended role was to defend bombers from hostile interceptors, a need demonstrated during World War II. Two prototypes were constructed before the program was terminated. The XF-85 was a response to a United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) requirement for a fighter to be carried within the Northrop XB-35 and B-36, then under development. This was to address the limited range of existing interceptor aircraft compared to the greater range of new bomber designs. The XF-85 was a diminutive jet aircraft featuring a distinctive egg-shaped fuselage and a forked-tail stabilizer design. The prototypes were built and underwent testing and evaluation in 1948. Flight tests showed promise in the design, but the aircraft's performance was inferior to the jet fighters it would have been facing in combat, and there were difficulties in docking. The XF-85 was swiftly canceled, and the prototypes were thereafter relegated to museum exhibits. (more...)

Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 backlog elimination drive report

GOCE November 2011 Backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We would like to thank all who participated in this drive. Here is the end-of-drive report.

Participation

There were 48 editors who signed-up for this drive, of which 35 participated. Thank you to everyone who helped reduce the size of the backlog!

Progress report

During the drive, we reduced the backlog by 232 articles, or by about 6%. This is a two percent increase from our September drive, when we copy edited 4% of the backlog. We were successful in our primary goal of clearing the oldest three months—March, April, and May 2010—from the queue. Thanks to all who helped copy edit these difficult articles. Thus far we have reduced the copy edit backlog by 5086 articles, or by about 61%. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

Coordinator election

The term of our second tranche of coordinators has run out, and we will be accepting nominations from December 5, 00:01 UTC to December 15, 23:59 UTC. If you or any other member of the Guild of Copy Editors wishes to be a coordinator, add your name to this page along with a statement describing why you believe you should be a coordinator for the Guild. You must be able to commit to a six month term. Thanks!

Once again, thank you for participating in the Guild's November 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Our next drive will be in January, and we hope to see you there!

Your drive coordinators – Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02 and SMasters

Responding to RFCs

Remember that RFCs are part of Dispute Resolution and at times may take place in a heated environment. Please take a look at the relevant RFC page before responding and be sure that you are willing and able to enter that environment and contribute to making the discussion a calm and productive one focussed on the content issue at hand. See also Wikipedia:Requests for comment#Suggestions for responding.

Greetings! You have been randomly selected to receive an invitation to participate in the request for comment on Talk:Southern Baptist Convention. Should you wish to respond to the invitation, your contribution to this discussion will be very much appreciated! However, please note that your input will carry no greater weight than anyone else's: remember that an RFC aims to reach a reasoned consensus position, and is not a vote. In support of that, your contribution should focus on thoughtful evaluation of the issues and available evidence, and provide further relevant evidence if possible.

You have received this notice because your name is on Wikipedia:Feedback request service. If you do not wish to receive these types of notices, please remove your name from that page. RFC bot (talk) 02:16, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Stable version edit

As you are listed as one of the main editors of McDonnell_XF-85_Goblin, I wanted to let you know about a new template that was added to the talk page. The stable version template is used to mark a stable version of the article, as a measure that combats edit rot, the deterioration of formerly good articles after they stop being supported, and is as well an option for people to access a version of the page that is less likely to be plagued by vandalism and other problems. Feel free to check it out on the template page. This does not change how the article itself is viewed or edited, and as the article evolves and things change, the stable version may of course be updated by simply replacing the permanent link in the template (it is stable, but not fixed). Congratulations on making the front page! Falconusp t c 19:08, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for informing me about this development -- I was previously unaware of it. So far, it sounds really good. is this template being added to every GA/FA at the moment? Thanks --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:11, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
No, it is not; I've added it to a couple dozen, but so far I think that only about three editors have been involved with it. I'm glad you like the sound of it though! Falconusp t c 22:27, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Edit: Also, it's not only for featured and good articles; in theory it's for any "stable" article - we have at least one on a C-class. Falconusp t c 22:27, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
With over 3,000,000 articles on en.wiki, I don't think it'll be easy rolling out the template. Again, thanks for informing me. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:29, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Wikification edit

Hi! I took a look at the wikification and I think I might contribute. I'll probably have some time available in a couple of days, when I plan to tackle some of these.

I am very happy with your copyedits because of the cleanup tags which you insert in addition to "regular" copyediting - thanks for those. Please do not feel obliged to copyedit because of wikification - I'm glad to contribute anyway. Still, if you have time and will to copyedit, I'll be very grateful because your contributions to articles you copyedited earlier on were very helpful!--Tomobe03 (talk) 14:22, 13 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the praise, but I've yet to reach my best at copyediting because I've only started copyediting last month. I'm still learning the tricks and trades of copyediting by looking at what others actions and learn from them. So, if you don't mind, I might still be making some mistakes on your articles. BTW, you might need to convert the "Transport facilities" section of Port of Split from dot points into prose. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:38, 13 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
You might be right on the bulleted list - but since a similar solution passed GAR with the Port of Rijeka, I'm tempted to leave this as it is too... until a GA reviewer possibly objects to that.--Tomobe03 (talk) 22:52, 13 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
I tried to wikify Novi Vinodolski article. Since I have not done this before, could you take a look at it and see if I did it as it should be? (diff) Thanks!--Tomobe03 (talk) 21:39, 17 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
It's slightly difficult to analyse your edits, but as far as I can tell, you've done a good job wikifying your first article. Just have a tab of WP:WIKIFY, which has all the instructions, open, so you don't forget what you're asked to do. Since you're new to wikification, I recommend you use CatScan to search for small unwikified articles. If you need help with it, just ask me. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 00:23, 18 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
I started wikifying Croatia–Hungary relations now - and this one was quite a different story. The original text was copied verbatim from a published scientific article summary! I thought it the best to replace the whole thing.--Tomobe03 (talk) 00:49, 18 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Wow, that's a really great effort! Although it is expected that you report the copy-paste violation, you have taken the matters into your own hands. Bravo! Anyway, as I said above, I think you should work on smaller articles first; I'll show you how if you log onto http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#wikipedia-en under a random nickname, and ping me. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 00:56, 18 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

{{copypaste}} tags edit

Where you find a source and the copyvio is obvious you may wish to consider tagging for G12 speedy rather than tagging as a copypaste. This would be particularly useful because, at the moment, due to a broken bot copypaste tagged articles are not being listed at WP:CP and so are often going overlooked. I'm trying to clear some of the backlog and have converted a few of your copypaste tags to G12s. Dpmuk (talk) 02:38, 14 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'd tagged articles with G12, with there were some people who simply removed the tag and removed the violated text. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 03:14, 14 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

"The Barnstar of Diligence" from Wilhelmina Will 467045124

Well, I think my three main resolutions, Wikipedia-wise, for 2012 will be: 1. Continue to help the improvement of the encyclopedia, both in the content and in the behind-the-scenes, any-which-way I can think of. 2. Improve my play in this year's Wikicup, from last year. And 3. Become a much better wikifier and copyeditor, then see about becoming more prolific in each! Mind you, now that I've told you this, you've got to hold me accountable, especially on that third one! ;) Cheers! Wilhelmina Will (talk) 08:56, 22 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Merry Christmas edit

Merry Christmas, Sp33dyphil!
During the holiday season, many of us are preoccupied with purchasing presents for friends and family. But many times, we forget about the true meaning of Christmas and the Christmas spirit. Christmas is not about the presents. It's about traditions and being with loved ones. It's about giving back to those you love, and seeing their faces light up like the Christmas tree when they receive your gift. So, this Christmas, I would like to give you a holiday greeting. Thanks for being a good friend, and Happy Holidays. May your Christmas tree, menorah, or kinara shine brightly.

GOCE template issue... maybe edit

I could be wrong, but based on User talk:Crisco 1492, I think there may be an issue with template:GOCEtb. I was scrolling down the page and noticed that you seemed to have placed this template on his page out of chronological order, because it was dated for today but up with November's posts. So I checked the history and you're not in it for today. I check the template again, thinking I'm missing something, and notice both your post and mine (each using this template) have the same time stamp.

It's gotta be one of three things: 1) A bug in the template, 2) A bug in my browser, 3) A bug in my brain. Can you check and see if it's rendering the same for you? Thanks, Zoë Alkaia 05:49, 30 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I figured out the problem. The template code includes template:Currentdate, so every time a page the template is posted to is loaded or purged, it updates with the current date and time. I'm not sure if I can fix it; templates have never been my thing. Zoë Alkaia 05:57, 30 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure what part of the template on Crisco 1492's talk page you're referring to. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 06:47, 30 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Compare the time stamps on this one by you to the one on this one by me. Zoë Alkaia 07:10, 30 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Oh no I see the problem. In any case, I don't think it's such a big deal; if there are any problems, please tell me. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 07:16, 30 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to the 2012 WikiCup edit

Hello, and welcome to the 2012 WikiCup! The competition officially begins at the start of 2012 (UTC) after which time you may begin to claim points. Your submission page, where you must note any content for which you wish to claim points, can be found here, and formatting instructions can be found in hidden comments on the page. A bot will then update the main table, which can be seen on the WikiCup page. The full rules for what will and will not be awarded points can be found at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There's also a section on that page listing the changes that have been made to the rules this year, so that experienced participants can get up-to-date in a few seconds. One point of which we must remind everyone; you may only claim points for content upon which you have done significant work, and which you have nominated, in 2012. For instance, articles written or good article reviews started in 2011 are not eligible for points.

This round will last until late February, and signups will remain open until the middle of February. If you know of anyone who may like to take part, please let them know about the comeptition; the more the merrier! At the end of this round, the top 64 scorers will progress to the next round, where their scores will reset, and they will be split into pools. Note that, by default, you have been added to our newsletter list; we will be in contact at the end of every month with news. You're welcome to remove yourself from this list if you do not wish to hear from us. Conversely, those interested in following the competition are more than welcome to add themselves to the list. Please direct any questions towards the judges, or on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! J Milburn (talk) and The ed17 (talk) 17:56, 31 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

A Reward for a great wikifier edit

The WikiLink Barnstar from Assassin's Creed. 468917876

I did what I had to do -- minimise the backlog. But since pretty much nobody wikified during the middle of the month, the magic number 19,000 wasn't reached. Nevertheless, we both did what we could, and that's the thing that counts. Thank you for the barnstar --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:02, 1 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes We did our job, and I think we'll reach the magic number 19,000 in the next drive. Thanks again.--Assassin'S Creed (talk) 18:59, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

The gender of ships edit

Hey - noticed the comments on the GAN for Tula. Ships are indeed normally she...except for Russian and German ships. The Russian/Soviet and German languages have their ships being masculine - they refer to them as "he". - The Bushranger One ping only 22:12, 1 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. But after having looked at Bismarck class battleship and some Googling, I might have to ask you to produce a reference. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:38, 1 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for butting in but the German articles for the Bismarck and Tirpitz both use die in the lead sentence, die is feminine, der is masculine and das is neutral (noting that we should not use WP articles as a reference). I speak German fairly well and can look in to it further if you like. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 01:57, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'd have to do some digging to find a reference - this is one of those things that "I've always known it, never bothered looking it up" - pretty sure I first learned it from Clancy (Red October of course, hardly a RS. ;) ) Can't recall where I saw the Germans using it but as a ship nut it stuck in my brain. I'll look around and see if I can find anything. - The Bushranger One ping only 02:25, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm not changing it yet until Bushranger can produce a ref about Russian ships. @The Bushranger you seem to have a passion with Clancy novels, like me! @Numbus are you aware of MoS convention about the naming of Russian submarines and ships? I'm not sure whether to use "Tula (K-114)" or "K-114 Tula". --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 02:33, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Know nothing about Russian language but the Germans seem to use feminine, same as we do. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 02:58, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK then, since this is En.wikipedia, looks like I'll be sticking with she. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 03:02, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Exactly.Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 03:04, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
LOL, I thought Bushranger wanted me to use she in Russian and German ship articles on En.wikipedia, until I read his opening comment again. :P --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 03:06, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Best to use feminine until RS'd otherwise - most non-Russian sources will use "she" anyway, and I doubt Captain Raimus will be popping up to yell at us about it. =P And yeah, Clancy's novels are good - up through Without Remorse, anyway. Rainbow Six was OK, but from The Bear and the Dragon onwards, the less said the better. (And the less said about the movie version of Sum of All Fears the better - Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan? What were they smoking?!) - The Bushranger One ping only 03:41, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
The Hunt for Red October is the best; all the others are alright. I'm reading Patriot Games ATM. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 03:44, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Agreed - both with regards to the book, and the movie. Wish they'd made a movie of Cardinal though. - The Bushranger One ping only 03:48, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Can you help me out with the article. There is a problem with sorting. Commander (Ping me) 18:32, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I don't think you can make the "Batting", "Bowling" and "Fielding" sortable since they span more than one column each. I've encountered similar problems with List of Boeing 777 operators, but it's been solved. The best thing I can think of is to move the rows "Batting", "Bowling" and "Fielding" to the top, so "Inn", "NO", etc are on the second row. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 02:55, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
No I'm able to sort that column. But it doesn't work properly. Check the fourth and fifth comment of User:The Rambling Man in the Peer review. Commander (Ping me) 08:47, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I don't totally get what "Suggest you force the en-dashes to sort before 0's in all columns." meanss? Maybe Rambling Man wanted to you convert all the zeros to en-dashes? --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 09:42, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Project collaboration edit

I may be interested. What Soviet/Russian sub articles did you have in mind?Федоров (talk) 04:17, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm currently compiling a list of sources (both offline and online) about the K-141 Kursk, the K-18 Karelia, and a number of X-class submarine (notably Oscar and Typhoon). Recently I've created Russian submarine K-114 Tula, which, although there aren't many English sources, I plan to take to MilHist A-class status. Since you've a valuable relationship with the Soviet/Russian naval leadership, I'd like to know if they're willing to provide any info on the operational aspects on these boats -- there's hardly any extensive and reliable documentation on the submarine branch of the Russian Navy. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 04:27, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Just wanted to acknowledge your request Sp33dyphil. K-114 Tula looks fantastic as it is - it's a great article, but I will start hunting around for further sources. Search for Michael Holm, www.ww2.dk/new/vvs.htm (he's in Denmark). He has a whole site on the Soviet Armed Forces in English including histories of units. He appears to be working directly from original books published in Russia. His e-mail is on the site: would recommend you contact him. Buckshot06 (talk) 09:43, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your rely. I've had a look at the site, but there doesn't seem to be much information about the Tula, only a brief mention of "K-114". However, as per your suggestion, I have sent Michael an email asking for assistance on the subject. To be honest, I don't think there's anymore reliable information Tula operations during 1991–2000, so I think that article won't be getting any bigger. If I was to nominate it for MilHist A-class status now, what is your thought on it? --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 09:59, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Could you verify the sentence "During 1987–1988, the boat conducted seven patrols, including five in the Arctic, 17 combat duties, and firing of twelve missiles"? In the ref, it says, "In the period from 1987 to 1998, "Tula" performed 7 fighting services, including 5 in the high Arctic, 17 combat duty, 12 rockets fired from an underwater position. Passed 134,856 running miles and 77,245 of them in a submerged position." Now, compare that to the Google Translated version of ru:Тула (подводная лодка). Thanks --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 10:04, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'd invite you to check out http://www.ww2.dk/new/rvsn/Sources.htm. If Michael has access to all those books on the RSVN, think about the books that must be available in Russian on the Soviet Navy. Give him time though - he's quite slow to respond. Try also a Google Scholar search in Russian on the boat's name. Also check Eastview Press. As for A-class now, go ahead: it's completely A-Class standard. For the verification of the text, go to User:Ezhiki - my Russian is limited. Please tell him you came at my request, ask him to help, and tell him you're not worried about translation of exact technical terms; his military Russian/English translation knowledge is not full US/NATO standard. Have you e-mailed Pavel Podvig? Buckshot06 (talk) 10:09, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've had a quick look at the top results from Google Scholar, but all the information are already in the article. I'm afraid that, with much information, the article will fail, at MilHist ACR, on 1) comprehensiveness due to a lack of information, and 2) the reliability of current sources (WikiMapia and Deepstorm.ru). Do you have any suggestion on what I should do to address the latter? There simply isn't much choice. I've requested assistance from user Федоров, who has a relation with the Soviet and Russian Navies. I doubt if they'll disclose any operational data of their submarines, unlike the more liberal US Navy. All in all, Russian submarine K-114 Tula has just ran aground (hahaha), and I don't think nobody could help her. Kursk all over again ... --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 10:30, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
If you think it might fail a review, don't run it through one. Have a quiet word to a couple of the senior coordinators and ask them about what they think of Deepstorm.ru. Wikimapia indeed is out. However, short articles (like USS Kentucky (BB-66) have gone through FAC before; you should not fail on comprehensiveness; this is a Russian subject after all. Let me have a think also. Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 10:42, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I see, "comprehensive" means all notable and available is included in the article -- if it doesn't exist, there's no need to piss in my pants over it. Cool --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 10:48, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
You haven't mentioned the grounding in the article as far as I can see. Am I missing something or are you planning to add that? Buckshot06 (talk) 11:10, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Translation of Russian text edit

It is a fairly accurate translation, although somewhat abridged compared to the original (but only the secondary details have been abridged). Do you need me to translate the whole sentence, or is this confirmation enough for your purposes?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); January 4, 2012; 14:30 (UTC)

Please translate the whole sentence, particularly "7 боевых служб" and "17 боевых дежурств" -- I ran them through Google but I can't distinguish "seven military service" from "17 combat duty". Could you also check whether that Russian paragraph, which has existed from 27 June 2007, was a translation from http://wikimapia.org/20830035/K-114-Tula-Delta-IV-Class-Submarine-SSBN, or vice versa. Thanks --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:05, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Here's the translation:
Also please note that Buckshot was right when he said that I am in no way a specialist in military terminology, but the above translation should be pretty close to the original meaning (and if anything sounds especially awkward, let me know, I can probably come up with an alternative term).
Regarding the Wikimapia passage, it seems indeed to be an attempt at the literal translation of the Russian text, so I would say that the Russian text was written first, especially considering that the text in Russian is well-written, while the passage on Wikimapia is horrible. However, I suspect the Russian passage in ru-wiki was lifted from some other Russian-language source (perhaps verbatim) without attribution, but that's just a hunch.
By the by, Wikimapia really shouldn't be used as a source for anything anyway, since it is just a wiki.
Does this answer your questions?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); January 5, 2012; 15:25 (UTC)
Thanks for your detailed answer. I was really tight on sources, so I used WikiMapia. If I was to remove it, I really don't know what other source to use. Once again, thanks for your contribution; I don't know where to go from here. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:10, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

copyedit of Second Transjordan edit

Hi, just noticed you are doing this copyedit but it was copyedited in November after being requested on 22.10.11 and a second copyedit of this article was not requested by me.

I think it may be a mix up because a copy edit of the First Transjordan attack on Amman (1918) was requested on 17.10.11 but has not been done. Would you be able to do the First Transjordan instead? --Rskp (talk) 01:28, 6 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think I was the copyeditor of First Transjordan attack on Amman (1918). And are you sure Second Transjordan attack on Shunet Nimrin and Es Salt (1918) had been copyedited? --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 01:29, 6 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Regarding 1st Transjordan, sorry, my mistake; another foolproof method failure! :) But regarding the 2nd Transjordan it was my understanding the work of Elinruby between 29 November and 2 December was a copyedit.--Rskp (talk) 04:17, 6 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'll look into it anyway, but can you at least remove it from the GOCE request page? --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 04:55, 6 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
If Elinruby was a copyeditor and did a copyedit, wouldn't Elinruby have already done that?--Rskp (talk) 01:42, 7 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK, if you're happy with it, then you can revert my edits. Good luck with the GA. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 01:47, 7 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Still a bit confused. I did wonder at the time, if Elinruby was in the copyeditors' guild. I haven't looked at your work, but suspect it may be superior to Elinruby's. If you don't mind, I would prefer for you to continue, as I would like the article to be as good as it can be.--Rskp (talk) 02:07, 7 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
No way is my copyedit superior, I'm only a beginner! I'm not sure what your take is, but I can't compete with an adult! Yeah sure, I can have a look at it, but don't expect anything from me. If you're not satisfied with my work, you can always revert it, because 1) as I said, I have no expertise in copy-editing, but nobody started out as experts, and 2) I don't have a lot of background knowledge of the subject. It's your call --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 02:12, 7 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

OK. I've just had a look at the work you have done and clearly the article will be improved if you were to continue. Don't worry, the subject is not at all well known, but I have hopes.--Rskp (talk) 02:33, 7 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I don't know what got into that editor's mind. However, we (and yourself as well, since you didn't object the PROD) both think that it's violated WP:OR, it doesn't really matter what steps had been taken, as long as a reasonable conclusion is reached. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 02:35, 6 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

OK, here is a preliminary list of everything I'd like you to do, and it includes requests from above.
  • Check that there are is no copy-right violation.
  • When done, please wikify, or link, words that are relevant in the article. The first paragraph of "History" might be a good place to start.
  • Add references to everything.
  • Convert the aim section from quote to prose.
  • How come there's a separate section for "Notable presidents since 1904"? I suggest merging it with the table

There isn't much difference between Australian and British English, except for a drop in sophistication in normal talking and several different words. But, the latter do not apply to meteorology, so I wouldn't/can't change anything in the article to suit your perceived need. I would've thought meteorological words constitute their own language, so I'd be more worried about ensuring such words, instead of Aus Eng, are present in the article. Well, that's the whole point of my request for a second opinion. Look, I don't know what the rush is about, but I think you're being slightly unreasonable here. After all, there are GANs that haven't received any attention after more than four weeks? I ask that you be patient, as I'm do all I can. In the meantime, why don't you review another GAN? Quick question edit

Hey Sp33dy. You seem to be the go-to guy for the aviation project, and I was wondering if you think the article Valentich disappearance falls under the project's scope (it's essentially an aircraft disappearance/disaster). I'm thinking of polishing it up for GA and A-Class reviews in the future and I'd like to know if it belongs to a project with serious members, since sourcing is likely to be contentious and pretty out-there, and it's probably going to need stern assessing in light of that. And congrats on T2, by the way! Probably my third favourite 90s film with Robert Patrick playing a bad guy opposite a huge action star (that maybe doesn't say much). GRAPPLE X 06:33, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it should be included in the Project, as there are various documents about the crash itself, the mention of UFOs (although that's not technically aviation-related), and also, just because the flight didn't have any flight numbers doesn't translate to exclusion from the Project. In addition, the RAAF sent a plane to look for the wreck, plus the main subject was a pilot. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 06:42, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ah, good. I'll stick the project banner on its talk page now. Thanks! GRAPPLE X 06:45, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
And, about the T2, it's about my favourite film ever (I think I already said this), as it combined the arguably hottest (in all senses of the word!) Hollywood star at the time, science fiction and spectacular special effects (and a memorable quote, maybe two) to create the most culturally-significant movie of all time. Geez, the franchise would still be kicking ass if Jim Cameron didn't leave it for Titanic and Avatar. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 06:48, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I dunno, looking at Jim's output, every film he makes seems to be a notch worse than the last—The Terminator is quite perfect, Aliens is great, The Abyss was almost great (someone could probably edit out all of the alien nonsense and turn it into a genuinely good political thriller instead), and T2 is pretty good. Beyond that we've got three more films that really should just never have happened. (I don't know how Piranha 2 fits into this though). I think Ed Furlong and the slap-in-the-face retconning of the first film are what annoy me about T2 but I could gladly sit and watch it at a moment's notice and still enjoy it. GRAPPLE X 07:02, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
You don't like Eddie? Well, I think including a kid helped make the movie a hit -- I don't think it's a coincidence regarding the lack of under 18s in the other three Terminator films and the fact that they haven't received quite as much ratings as T2. No offense to Stan Winston and Industrial Light & Magic, their contribution was awesome, WITH A CAPITAL A! Anway, I've talked to Betty Logan and he/she thinks that the article can get to FA provided that some info from the books about the film to be included in the article. Looks like we've hit the Great Wall. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 07:10, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I managed to find a rake of print sources for a neo-noir flop featuring half of the Miami Vice cast (currently at FAC), I'd be very surprised if there didn't exist similar material for a film as huge as T2. I've finished my uni course for the year so I'm going to be using the library there for my own purposes during the wikicup, I'll have a look to see if I can turn anything up next time I drop in. JSTOR's journal records might also turn something up—you felt the release information was scant, so maybe archives of Billboard would have information on home media or the like; and I can imagine the change in Hamilton's character from onlooker to badass has probably merited an article or two of feminist criticism. It's out there, no doubt, but finding it is the issue. GRAPPLE X 07:17, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm currently busy with another article; the ref gathering depends on you now, whether you want to improve the article or win the WikiCup. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 09:19, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Also eurgh Furlong. Check out Animal Factory and American History X for more good films he goes out of his way to ruin. GRAPPLE X 07:18, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2012 January newsletter edit

WikiCup 2012 is off to a flying start. At the time of writing, we have 112 contestants; comparable to last year, but slightly fewer than 2010. Signups will remain open for another week, after which time they will be closed for this year. Our currrent far-away leader is   Grapple X (submissions), due mostly to his work on a slew of good articles about The X-Files; there remain many such articles waiting to be reviewed at good article candidates. Second place is currently held by   Ruby2010 (submissions), whose points come mostly from good articles about television episodes, although good article reviews, did you knows and an article about a baroness round out the score. In third place is   Jivesh boodhun (submissions), who has scored 200 points for his work on a single featured article, as well as points for work on others, mostly in the area of pop music. In all, nine users have 100 or more points. However, at the other end of the scale, there are still dozens of participants who are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly!

The 64 highest scoring participants will advance to round 2 in a month's time. There, they will be split into eight random groups of eight. The score needed to reach the next round is not at all clear; last year, 8 points guaranteed a place. The year before, 20.

A few participants and their work warrant a mention for achieving "firsts" in this competition.

  •   12george1 (submissions) was the first to score, with his good article review of Illinois v. McArthur.
  •   12george1 (submissions) was also the first to score points for an article, thanks to his work on Hurricane Debby (1982)- now a good article. Tropical storms have featured heavily in the Cup, and good articles currently have a relatively fast turnaround time for reviews.
  •   Sp33dyphil (submissions) was the first to score points for a did you know, with Russian submarine K-114 Tula. Military history is another subject which has seen a lot of Cup activity.
  •   Sp33dyphil (submissions) is also the first person to successfully claim bonus points. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is now a good article, and was eligible for bonus points because the subject was covered on more than 20 other Wikipedias at the start of the competition. It is fantastic to see bonus points being claimed so early!
  •   Speciate (submissions) was the first to score points for an In the News entry, with Paedophryne amauensis. The lead image from the article was also used on the main page for a time, and it's certainly eye-catching!
  •   Jivesh boodhun (submissions) was the first to score points for a featured article, and is, at the moment, the only competitor to claim for one. The article, "Halo" (Beyoncé Knowles song), was also worth double points because of its wide coverage. While this is an article that Jivesh and others have worked on for some time, it is undeniable that he has put considerable work into it this year, pushing it over the edge.

We are yet to see any featured lists, featured topics or good topics, but this is unsurprising; firstly, the nomination processes with each of these can take some time, and, secondly, it can take a considerable amount of time to work content to this level. In a similar vein, we have seen only one featured article. The requirement that content must have been worked on this year to be eligible means that we did not expect to see these at the start of the competition. No points have been claimed for featured portals or pictures, but these are not content types which are often claimed; the former has never made a big impact on the WikiCup, while the latter has not done so since 2009's competition.

A quick rules clarification before the regular notices: If you are concerned that another user is claiming points inappropriately, please contact a judge to take a look at the article. Competitors policing one another can create a bad atmosphere, and may lead to inconsistencies and mistakes. Rest assured that we, the judges, are making an effort to check submissions, but it is possible that we will miss something. On a loosely related note: If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. T2 congrats edit

Congrats on the T2 GA. 85,000 people per month come to see it. 100 times the viewership of median GA.

Not an easy topic either, with the sourcing and the different aspects. Good job!!!

Thanks for the support. I've got problems getting it to FA though. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 03:41, 1 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Haven't watched the processbut don't doubt it. Film articles are a ballbuster to get through FA (see the struggles of Texas Chain Saw Massacre). You really might be better off (for the readers and competitions) using your time to take another one to GA, vice that to FA.
Getting T3:ROTM to GA would be nice, but a rewrite and expansion would demand a lot of time, especially since school starts in 39 hours. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 03:47, 1 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi edit

Hey-- I won't remove the PROD unless others agree it should be removed. I hope I'm not causing any trouble in my editing, some parts of wikipedia I know very well, some parts I'm still only semi-familiar with, but if you see me off track, just shout.

I've added another link to another incident covered by a source independent of the subject-- this time in 2012. I think this brings it up to speed but i'm not a big stub guy usually, so let me know if I'm still off. HectorMoffet (talk) 05:44, 1 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I guess not. The article/list looks well-constructed and you received three supports for your work. Some articles seem to fast-track during the review process and some procrastinate until they turn green. MisterBee1966 (talk) 08:14, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Re: Copyright edit

We're allowed to use sources when creating images. As long as the work was produced essentially de novo, there isn't a problem. If you look at academic textbooks, you'll often find that works are produced "after Suchandsuch". If you find new evidence, make sure to notify Commons as well. Regards, Papa Lima Whiskey 2 (talk) 08:55, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure if there's been any confirmation that the picture was de novo, and as images are much harder to work with images than text, I've decided to strike my support for the FPC. I've left a message on the author's talk page though. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 09:17, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well, you should read my comment there, because it turns out the information you've been looking for can be found. Papa Lima Whiskey 2 (talk) 09:24, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
As a music publisher, I'm always interested when I see the word "copyright" pop up. I've done my best to track both of your comments/conversations on this subject. While I am not a judge of this particular diagram or its purported source (I was not able to locate Modern Battlefield Warplanes pages 218-219 to read online without purchase), I will say that--for Wikipedia purposes--relying on practices observed in academic textbooks simply falls short of the mark when it comes to adherence to U.S. Copyright Law. Human nature chooses to rely on that which proves its point and disregard that which refutes it. Thus we have U.S. Copyright law as our arbiter. Every day the extent of copyright violations in this world becomes greater exponentially. Simply saying something is compliant with current statutes because it is following the example of something else which exists in "published" format is less than a weak argument. In determining if something is a totally "de novo" work, or, if it is in fact a derivative of a copyright protected work, when there is a reasonable perception that the work is an unauthorized derivative, then I would not expect someone to support its inclusion on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons.Gordios (talk) 09:43, 10 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

To add context, the relevant images [7] [8]. I believe there's enough disparity between the two images for the Commons file to be treated as an original work. After all, there's bound to be similarities between designs of the same plane. —Dark 11:07, 10 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Online Ambassador, Spring 2012 edit

Hi, Philip! As you probably know, the Wikipedia Education Program has instilled a new set of standards that courses must meet to officially join the program for the semester. As you can see, one of the requirements is that at least one ambassador or professor is a Wikipedian, as this should give students more access to helpful information about contributing to Wikipedia and creating good content. You are listed on the Online Ambassador page; are you still interested in remaining active this semester? Some of these classes will have to remove themselves from the program should they fail to meet these standards, but we would like to ensure that new students are receiving proper support during the editing process. Please let me know if you are still interested in mentoring these students this semester and/or visit the Online Ambassador talk page to select a course that still needs an Online Ambassador. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by JMathewson (WMF) (talkcontribs) 01:01, 4 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Guild of Copy Editors January 2012 backlog elimination drive

GOCE January 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

45 people signed up for this drive this time; of these, 35 participated. This is similar to the number of editors who helped out in November. Thanks to all who participated! Barnstars will be distributed in the near future.

Progress report

Recent drives have been focusing on the oldest three months in the backlog. During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—July, August, and September 2010—from the queue, and there are less than 300 articles remaining from 2010. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the January 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy edit drive will be in March.

Re:Since you promoted a DYK of mine, do you know... edit

Yep, I've had a couple of lists featured on DYK. Most recently List of Queens Park Rangers F.C. seasons, and before that List of Scotland national football team hat-tricks, U.S. state dog breeds and List of Best in Show winners of Crufts. However I did have one turned down, which was List of San Marino national football team results. The reason for that failure was because the reviewer decided that the prose portion of it mirrored information already available on other articles and therefore wasn't "new" to fulfill the DYK requirements. I think that's the key point, is that you need to make sure that the prose is unique (or from a unique angle compared to the other articles). Miyagawa (talk) 08:52, 13 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Could you help out by checking the editors from User:Dtgriffith through User:Levalley and removing any inactive editors from the list? Any duplicates can also be removed. Re:List of Sturgeon class submarines edit

I've moved List of Sturgeon class submarines's DYK nomination back to the listing so you can put the image up there now. Miyagawa (talk) 22:41, 24 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

DYK rules require that any image included in a DYK nomination has to also be included in the article itself. As the image added to that nomination is not in the article, I've had to put a hold on the nomination until either the image is added to the article or removed from the nomination. Sorry about that, but the rules are quite specific with regard to images. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:43, 25 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Russian submarine St Petersburg edit

Take a look at the Leningrad Naval Base article, and remember that article is old-ish, so the submarine may have been resubordinated from the under-construction and repair brigade it was assigned to. Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 13:29, 25 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Quick question for you - what was the reason for creating List of Sturgeon class submarines instead of adding that wonderful table and peripherals to the original class article? Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 22:58, 25 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well, my reasoning behind the creation of the list is that, if the list was embedded in the article, then it would be undue as it would dominate the prose-deficient article. On the other hand, if the article was expanded to its maximum potential and the list was also included, then Sturgeon class submarine would be too long. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 01:07, 26 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Just as an FYI... edit

I've nominated Ashleigh Southern and Victoria Brown (water polo) for Good Article. As you helped contribute to them for a DYK nomination, I thought you might be interested in that bit. (especially if you can edit enough to help get GA credit.) If you can help improve it some more, that would also be greatly appreciated. :) (I've also nominated Kelsey Wakefield and Zoe Arancini from the same set for GA but you didn't work on those two. Still, any help improving it would be appreciated.) --LauraHale (talk) 12:20, 29 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
