Micronesia and others...

No one has contested? I do not think that I will have to elaborate. Micronesian is a branch of Proto Remote Oceanic. But it does not include all the geographic Micronesian region. Chamorro is not Micronesian. Yapese is not Micronesian. Palau is not Micronesian. And are not closely related. You are confused between Nuclear Micronesian and the Micronesian Region. And you probably have no better source than Ethnologue. Please, have a look to The Lexicon of Proto Oceanic, The culture and environment of ancestral Oceanic Society, 1. Material Culture, — 2. The Physical Environment. edited by Malcolm Ross, Andrew Pawley and Meredith Osmond. ISBN 0 85883 507 X (v. 1) & 0 85883 539 (v. 2). It's not only a concept of outliers (from Polynesia or elsewhere). The history of these frontiers is far more interesting (and delicate) that you could imagine. The 3-Division of Oceanic is a non-sense... Excuse my poor English (I am Italian and French) and not even able to make me understood easily.

Enzino 18:39, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Excuse me again and I do apologise for what I've written: as I do not speak very well English, I may have been too rude for a very delicate matter (I do not understand obnox...). The point is, and you're right, that Micronesian is not very precise word, both linguistical and geographical. The new geographers (since 1970) do not divide Oceania in the 3 traditionnal parts. And this 3-division is no more helpful for linguists. Jules Dumont d'Urville decided these 3(4)-division in 1831...Enzino 14:55, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Polynesian languages

I changed what I had originally written (rather badly) in the Polynesian languages article, which you rightly objected to, specifically, my apparent nonsense wrt the "late evidence of protoX in its daughter languages". Hopefully my alterations to the article have clarified what I was trying to say. Time permitting, I'll make a Proto-Polynesian language article in the near future, unless someone beats me to it. The info I was drawing from came from "Current Trends in Linguistics" vol. 9, published, I believe, in the late 1980s. Tomer TALK 07:12, Apr 27, 2005 (UTC)

Congratulations on your internet cafe

"mine has wireless access and coffee in the common house, but not in a "cafe" format"

That's what I meant. You've got a Hotspot, possibly a desktop computer somewhere, some chairs, possibly some chairs outside and a Nutrimatic or similar somewhere. What else constitutes an Internet cafe? Waitresses? --Fasten 17:57, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

"Calling it an internet cafe evokes something quite different to me, and using it here seems idiosyncratic."

I agree I am stretching the term but I've sponsored a WLAN together with some friends for our favorite cafe, which already had one single desktop computer available for customers and a DSL flatrate. We didn't call it an internet cafe but it would have qualified, in my opinion. Where do you draw the line? --Fasten 11:23, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

Fixing your user page

No problem, and in the future, I'll leave it for you to. I completely understand where you're coming from, and I respect that it feels a bit "invasive" to have others moving things around in your user space. :) On another note, I've come across this article, which I think you've had some opinions on: The Fictional Southern Mauristemo Islands. Am I missing something here? This seems like a no-brainer, in that it doesn't belong in Wikipedia - indeed, you clearly opposed the article, as one of the above comments shows. I've gone ahead and nominated the article for deletion, so feel free to vote, or post any comments you have on the related page. Cheers! --PeruvianLlama(spit) 02:56, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi there. I already added Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sebastian Prooth to the main AfD page for today. It's toward the bottom. -Splashtalk 03:52, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

Oh, sorry, it was someone else I guess. The afd got transcluded into one I was writing twice, and I just looked at the history and saw your name. You probably just edit-conflicted with someone. I haven't edited the debate myself. -Splashtalk 04:02, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

AfD on Sakosa tribe

Hi. Thanks for bringing the problem with my AfD nomination to my attention on my user talk page, but I can't see the problem -- it showed up as a weird red link earlier, but the nomination seems to look and work like the others now. Could you describe the problem you noticed in case there's still something wrong that I'm not seeing? Thanks a lot. Sommers 17:15, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

AfD on Wikifiddler

Hi. I was wondering if you could reconsider your stance here. You favor merger into CoW, but CoW seems like a general article on criticisms of Wikipedia and this a very specific attack on Wikipedians. I favor keeping the article the way it is and maybe making a new article Attacks on Wikipedia and using some of the information contained within this article. Aucaman 01:00, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Julian May

Hi. I noticed you changed the intro line in the biography section on Julian May. Now it repeats the birth date given in the introduction. I don't like having it in basically two consecutive sentences, but I wanted to check in with you to see if you just hadn't noticed that. Usually the birth and death dates go in the intro paragraph. --Syrthiss 12:50, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Copyright issues

Thanks for your response to my question about "including my article in a broader search." As for the copyright issues, can I avoid the GFDL (I am a new user so I'm not even sure what that involves) if I have direct permission from the Bioethics Institute administration? If so, how do I amend that cited reference? Perhaps with "Permission granted by...?" (I work at the Institutes' headquarters).

Thanks for looking into this issue further. I removed the cleanup tag for now because I am referencing a separate piece of work by the Bioethics Institute which does not appear to have a copyright attached to it. I left the website as an external link. Kathychen 21:15, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

"But did they not improve it?"

No, they did not improve it, that is the whole point. They copied the old page and put it back. And 'they' are not for the most part regular WP contributors (a small few are regular contributors). Some are relatively new and seem to have just contributed because they were asked to on their forum. The same thing just happens to happen in the other related pages that were up for deletion (Zompist, Worst of the Web, etc...) with the same people using meatpuppets to win votes of deletion.--Jersey Devil 13:23, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Re: ZuluPad AfD

Hey--don't take the AfD discussion on ZuluPad personally. There has to be some kind of notability established to have an article on any sibject, and it has to verifiable in trusted sources.

No worries. I'm not taking it personally, and I understand the reasoning for why it will most likely be deleted. But it's in my nature to put up a fight, anyway. ;-)

Re Polynesian languages

Cheers for your appreciation of my edits. I kind of repented a little and restored some it with amendments. It was annoying that examples from a made up language were used - 'esperanto Polynesian' indeed! public/private wikis

I was looking into the possibility it for someone else, but I don't know what they ended up doing. Their original question was along the lines of using a weblog-based collaboration. Have you considered contacting the maintainers of the two lab sites I linked in the help desk? (Giddings lab at UNC and Murray lab at LSU).

Those two both use MediaWiki. You'll need a server to run them on. What do you have available? Other than that, I'd recommend reading the documentation and comparisons. Opensourcecms.com has a lot of programs installed and hosted so you can try them out. As I have no experience setting them up, my best advice is for you to go and find some good advice. :-> Let me know how it goes. Good luck! --Christopherlin 01:36, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Register in Mon

Rodii, thanks for the encouragement. Actually, I am planning a major expansion of this article. I have been doing the editing in a word processor and plan to add sections as I complete them. I added the info box yesterday. I haven't completed the section on Register yet, but as it was previously written and labelled, it was highly inaccurate so I thought I'd clean it up a little. As for your point, I agree about titling the section "Register" it was previously labelled "Intonation" and I was just trying to keep some harmony by changing it to "Phonation" which is more accurate yet less specific. I don't forsee this section including other aspects of phonation so I will change it to "Register".

As for your other question, I am only peripherally familiar with Burmese (my main area being Austro-Asiatic). I don't think there is consensus among linguists on where to draw the line between tone and register. I believe most view the development of register as the precursor to eventual "pure" tonality. Personally, as with many things in linguistics, I see it as a continuum. Purely modal languages on one exteme and purely tonal languages on the other extreme with register languages falling somewhere towards the tonal end. Khmer (in which I have practically native fluency), which has a slight register-type element would be more toward the modal end of the continuum. Burmese would fall much closer to the tonal end. Mon, somewhere in between these two.

I think the closer a register language is to the "purely" tonal end, the more likely it will be termed a "tonal" language. The farther away it is from that end, the more likely it will be termed only a "register" language. Also important is the degree to which tone is contrastive. For example, both Vietnamese and Hmong Daw have a creaky voice tone. But the relative tone contour is fixed. If the creaky voice tone were a rising tone, for example, and it was pronounced in, say a falling tone, but still with the creaky voice quality, it would probably be misinterpreted or not recognized outside of context. In that case, although tone and voice quality are intertwined, it is the tone that is phonemically contrastive. In Mon or Khmer, breathy voice syllables can be (and are) spoken in any variety of intonations and still be the same word. It is the breathy voice quality of the vowel that is contrastive.

Anyway, thanks for your kind words, as you can see, I am passionate about linguistics and I can (and sometimes, unfortunately, do) talk at length about it. Keep checking back...I would appreciate any further input/criticisms you might have about the development of the article.--WilliamThweatt 19:12, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

That's interesting about the African tones. I must confess I know next to nothing about the language families of Africa (other that the Semitic-type languages of North-East Africa). I'd like to learn more about tones in African languages. Can you point me to any readily available resources? I imagine the conversations with Diffloth were stimulating, how intriguing.
As for Nyah Kur, I found the redlink to "Nyahkur" when I was Categorizing the Austro-Asiatic languages here on WP (you wouldn't believe the various categories the articles were placed in before). I put it on my User Page to remind myself to create "Nyah Kur" and redirect the other. Nyah Kur and Mon are the only languages on the Monic branch. They both descend directly from the Old Mon of Dvaravati. The current consensus is that it is a distinct language. According to Diffloth (1984) and Ferlus (1983) Nyah Kur and Mon seperated after the Khmer overran Dvaravati in the 9th century and have developed seperately ever since. The present day Mon speakers being the descendants of those who fled west and the Nyah Kur being those who stayed and were absorbed by the Khmer and later the Thai. It is ironic that the language now called Nyah Kur is much more conservative and closer to Old Mon than is modern-day Mon. Paul Sidwell summarizes the situation very well at http://www.anu.edu.au/~u9907217/languages/AAlecture3.html

List of cities without visibility of total solar eclipses for more than one thousand years

Hello,

First of all, thank you for your support. But as far as the exponential thing is concerned:

Being a mathematician myself (or rather a physicist, but non-scientists will hardly note the difference), I did my own caculations:

From Jan 15 2001 till Mar 29 2006: increase from 0 to 19 From Mar 29 2006 till Apr 15 2006: increase from 19 to 29

Which delivers me a 59 to 1 ratio and a nice exponential graph ;)

But of course I didn't mean it that literally. Isn't the figurative use of exponential to denote a very steep increase a common US English expression?

Pulling Cospire links

I appreciate your diligence in keeping wikipedia free of advertising but I believe that I was merely following precedence. There are a TON of wikipedia articles dedicated to commercial products (software in particular) on this site. The only difference between mine and theirs is age of the product and perhaps number of users although we have a fair number of those for a new product. Admittedly, Cospire is being called "Beta" but that is only because it is new and is bound to have bugs. However, the product is not a "crystal ball" product since it's servers have been colocated and are being actively used every day. I think more guidance is needed for people to understand when exactly a product crosses the line of being worthy of publication. For example, you can understand my confusion when I see a wikipedia article who's sole purpose is to list wiki sites, I put a link to my site under "Free Wiki Farms" (like all the others), and it gets pulled. I think that people looking for free hosts for wikis or collaborative software might be as interested in my link as the next. I took a lot of care to make sure I only put links where they were implicitely invited rather then just spamming and I think if you took a look at the pages you pulled my links from you would see that was true. As far as how new my site is, I was under the impression that wikipedia took pride in having the newest information. I guess my question is "When will I be there?" Does the site need as many users as wikipedia to be relevant or just a few hundred? Judging by the jungle of obscure software products I see referenced, I would think the latter. How long does it have to be around? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Snoutholder (talkcontribs)

Ok, the links you provided in your response were very useful and I agree that under those guidelines, Cospire does not make the cut. However, as I think you know, there is a lot of material that got through on those pages before the noose tightened. In some cases it will be a shame for them to be pulled though. Having a good list of free software is a good resource.

Rodii, I feel , like some others who voted for keeping this article on WP , that the admins were biased. So since there is a wkikipedia fork which allows sympathetic point of view could be the place to keep this article. I don't feel this article should die and it deserves to be here at WP more than many articles we have here. But probably for some time , the best option we have for keeping this article alive is by taking it to another encyplaediac project. I hope you reply back to me about it because we both feel trhe same way about this article.

Comparison of content management systems--PROD removed

I removed your prod tag. As I said in the edit summary, I understand where you're coming from and kinda-sorta agree. That article and others like it are a constant headache. But it's a valuable resource and I think most of the products referenced are fairly notable. Not all! We just underwent a major cleanout, mostly of redlinks. The next step is to look at individual product articles from the list and see which ones are truly spam or non-notable. It's essentially a "bottom up" cleanup effort of CMS articles, and this article is a useful way to keep track of which articles to look at. So like I say, I hear your doubts, but I think we're taking care of it. However, if you want to take this to AfD, I wouldn't be averse--but articles like this usually don't fare well there, in my opinion.

Also wanted to thank you for stepping in in the Atlantic Webfitters bruhaha. I didn't want to edit war, though I think he's totally in the wrong. I appreciate the support. · rodii · 21:45, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

It's easy for advertisements masquerading as articles to slowly seep in, since it's not that easy to judge notability standards for software products unless one happens to be very knowledgeable in that area. Since there is a cleanup effort underway, I withdraw my pledge to send it to afd. OhNoitsJamieTalk 21:52, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

"cruft" subpages

Here, you wrote:

Re:Apology

Hi,

Wikimood is a complicated thing. After dealing with lot of people who show bad faith, it sometimes might get difficult to understand people who are acting in good faith and those who are not. Actually the fault is partially mine too as I did not wait long enough to see it fixed. BTW. I see a lot of articles relating to Michigan are either featured or of very good quality. Have you ever considered finding some good Michigan related topic and nominating it for Featured Topic. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 05:51, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

RE: Oceania

Hello! I am now inactive in Wikipedia (and my account has been such for some weeks), but I've chosen to respond to your query. Thanks for your note and praise; yes -- I created the table a little while ago. I initially omitted any section heading due to the confusion over the various defs of Oceania/Australasia. However, I do like your (current) version with note ... and support listing countries based on the UN scheme (for instance, Timor Leste = Southeastern Asia) I hope this helps -- good luck! Your revert of Chuck Marean's edit.

Concerning: "Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links, images, or media files" :

  1. "repository" is a big word that needs to be defined
  2. about "Wikipedia articles are not:" Saying encyclopedia would make the statement more understandable
  3. "Mere collections of external links or Internet directories" is worded backwards so it sounds awkward to read
  4. "On articles about topics with many fansites," has a comma instead of colon and so the sentence doesn't make sense.

So,Instead of reverting to inferior versions you should read the edits and if you don't likeHiEditie ediitbla bla Am I GGREATTTT or what them, edit. In other words, automatically defending a particular version of a page does not seem to go along with improving the encyclopedia, because what if there was in fact a great improvement of the page? --Chuck Marean 00:40, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Accident Reconstruction

My bad. I should have checked for an earlier prod. The problem with AfD is that it is a perfectly good topic; it's just a horrible article. I don't think anything that's there now would remain in a good article on the subject. I'll give it some thought. Maybe I'll see if I can put together a halfway decent stub on the topic, rather than trying to delete it. Fan1967 00:15, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Looks like Vegaswikian has already made a start on it. Fan1967 00:31, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Humphrey Davies

G'day rodii,

thanks for your message. I'm being very crotchety today (as you may or may not have noticed ;-)), but this is an important issue. I've replied to AKMask (talk · contribs) on Talk:Humphrey Davies, and hopefully that reply will shed some light on just why I'm being crotchety (apart from the whole "Australia is in a group with Brazil, Croatia and Japan" angle).

Your message highlights one issue that worries me, which is that you only reverted because you didn't realise I was an established editor and admin. While it's nice to be recognised :-), it shouldn't have mattered who removed the speedy tag, so long as it wasn't the author. We don't like the authors of articles removing speedy tags, since they tend to be rather protective of articles that really need to be deleted, but a third party— any third party—removing the tag is quite acceptable. Remember, we're trying to keep our encyclopaedia clean of rubbish, not just delete stuff because one person didn't like it. fuddlemark (befuddle me!) 04:56, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Re:Blog

I was unaware of the blanking, so that explains why there wasn't any external links...Its OK, my edit doesn't really matter now. — Wackymacs 14:21, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

The best line I've seen in a while

I have to say that "A Wikipedia article about this company may be referred to by key decision makers throughout the world as they weigh the value of the advice it provides" is the scariest thing I'm likely to read today. Are you serious? · rodii · 15:16, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

It is a scary thought, isn't it? Fan1967 19:56, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Chadibaggio

Thanks for undoing the impersonation. He'd also done it at the Humphrey Davies talk page. I'm starting to wonder precisely what type of user we have here. Fiddle Faddle 09:06, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Humphrey Davies - addendum

I've followed your example and made some clarifying edits to the page (see its talk page). I lack the experience here to be able to decide whether, in view of the impassioned rehtoric, this article should be moved to AfD where it will, presumably, get a better peer review. If it gets moved, where shoudl all the stuff on the speedy =deletions page go? That, really, is where I lack the experience, since I see no reason not to move it to AfD, but it's the "stuff " that goes with it that I don't know what to do with. Fiddle Faddle 06:52, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

I think we should let the PROD play out and see what happens. If the PROD is removed, AfD seems like a good next step, and in that case we can just add a link to the deletion review discussion. What a mess, with the whole fuddlemark flap, the userfying... I wouldn't want to have to summarize it.
I did that editing because I wanted to see if there was a worthwhile article under all that gunk. I'm kind of ambivalent--he does seem like a reasonably accomplished person, but I just don't know how to judge notability. It's hard to separate my feelings about the author (basically, that he's a moron) from my feelings about the article. · rodii · 14:42, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
I've tried to be as objective as possible, and treat the author in my head as someone who's first tongue is not English. I think Davies is borderline notable, but the article is not. I spent an hour googling Davies earlier today and found nothing except that he has translated a lot of stuff. Well, I have done a lot of stuff in my life. I'm even borderline notable in a small field, but nothing to warrant an article on me, especially one that precisley nothing links to like this one. Frankly I hope the author just makes it notable. I'll respond to him with gentlemanly politesse, but I can;t help him any further. Fiddle Faddle 14:52, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
BTW have you had a look at Talk:Humphrey Davies recently? I'm a little aggravated about being yelled at, but I'm old enough and ugly enough to cope :) It's by no means slap on the wrist stuff, but that outburst lost him my sympathy and help, I'm afraid. Fiddle Faddle 16:10, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Yep, I tried to back you up a bit. But I doubt it will help. · rodii · 16:47, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Regrettably he is counter-productive. I was in the process of actively trying to help the article, but he tweaked my "not with a barge pole" muscle, I'm afraid. Tks for the backup. I have been wondering, despite his assurances, if he is Davies, but that seems unlikely. Equally his command of english also makes me think, since the article is so much better, that the whole thing may be a set of copyvios. Don't we get suspicious when we get yelled at? Fiddle Faddle 17:05, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
He is not a good editor, for sure (stronger language redacted, but it included a reprise of the word "moron"). But just let it go. The article will either be deleted or improved. Either way it's a win. And loose cannons like chad tend to attract enough attention eventually that they have a learning experience of one sort or another. · rodii · 17:12, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Wow. Who says 'redacted' in real life? :) Rofl. I thought it was just me! I have redacted him from my brain. Well will in 10 minutes or so :) Fiddle Faddle 17:27, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Real life!? *looks around* What real life? :) · rodii · 17:33, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
