Ohlone Contribution

Hi Ryhme... THANK YOU for being the first person to help with Ohlone mythology. I hpe you don't mind but I moved most of your contributions here Ohlone mythology, it will be a full page article on Ohlone mythology and world view... one day. This idea has been on my to do list. It will branch off all Ohlone pages because I also put it in the Ohlone template/table of contents.... Placement of Traditional Narratives

Hi, Goldenrowley.

I'm in the process of contributing sections on traditional narratives for all of the California groups. Initially I had thought of making them separate articles, but because I don't anticipate that they will contain extended discussions of the contents of the narratives (at least for now), their content seemed a little thin to stand alone. So I decided to go with sections in the general articles for the ethnic groups. Because I'm keying them through a template in the general "Traditional narratives (Native California)" article, it's probably desirable to be consistent, one way or the other. I'm open to discussion as to which way would be better, and I'm willing to change the ones I've already posted. Let me know what you think.

As to the title, I think "traditional narratives" is preferable to "mythology". Many of the narratives involved (for instance, many of the trickster stories) technically aren't myths; they're tales or legends, in the terminology of folklorists, anthropologists, and Wikipedia itself.RhymeNotStutter 03:16, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

oK thanks its not a bad idea to separate religion from folklore here. I am thinking it over, and mythology pages I imagined were going to cover religion, spirituality, the creation myth and stories of the world order... the basis of the group's philosophy and religion. I can't call them folklore and narratives, thats downsizing them, but I did not do a good job of it yet. i.e. The Miwok belived Coyote created the world, so did the Pomo so to them coyote is "ancestor" and a "creator god" not just "folklore". However I read the article your referring to and its very good. what I suggest is you add the narrative sections as new material but don't overwrite the headings of mythology, just add the topic narratives as a new topic....does that sound good? I think separate sections on "Religion" and "Narratives" would work. The section on Religion could cover basic beliefs about the world, as well as shamanism, etc. The section on Narratives could deal with stories about the past, whether they concerned Coyote creating the world or Coyote getting his comeuppance as a trickster. (There's nothing derogatory about calling myths "narratives". If anything, it's the other way around; some Native Americans see "myth" as a derogatory term because of its alternative meaning of something that isn't true.) Mythology is the study of one particular kind of narratives, but of course some of those narratives also say a lot about religious beliefs.

Am I correct in understanding that you would now favor keeping these materials as sections within single tribal articles rather than splitting them off; i.e., in the article on "Ohlone" rather than as "Ohlone Religion" and "Ohlone Traditional Narratives" articles?RhymeNotStutter 13:05, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

I have an idea of how our work "goes well together" and will work it in tonight on Ohlone and Miwok pages, Narrative is Level 1 heading on the pages you've selected (ok I see this working), while mythology to be a Level 2 heading undernearth narratives that links to the myth pages. Hi Rhyme! This reference was not entirely bogus: Kroeber, Theodore Almost Ancestors: The First Californians (1968) is listed under her name here on Wikipeda. I will try to better verify the source. Hi Ryhme! I like the new pages it works for now and for any future expansion. Sorry I did not explain myself very well the other day, what I've been is using the ethnic templates as my guide for the native groups in the Bay Area Region, also using the Wikipedia style guide, and the A+ article called Mandan as an example for these pages.
