ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:52, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

December 2021 GOCE Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since September 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

Election time: Our end-of-year election of coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before "Auld Lang Syne". Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now!

Drive and Blitz reports

September Drive: Almost 400,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 27 people who signed up, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

October Blitz: From 17 to 23 October, we copy edited articles tagged in May and June 2021 and requests. 8 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

November Drive: Over 350,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 21 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

Other news

It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community.

Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

Theory regarding this user

I don't know if you believe the same, but I think the person behind this user is Dalas himself (Daniel Santome). This is because he speaks in the first person as if they were accusing him of things on the page, something that obviously does not happen and never happened, or at least in my editions made on the page.--Germanico5468504 (talk) 02:21, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

@Germanico5468504: that's what I initially thought when I saw the deletion notice, of course, given the first-person pronouns. It didn't affect how I treated their edit - any other IPs' edits I modified in my two or so years as a Wikipedian could have been celebrities, for all I know. Regardless of fame, people don't get to choose if their article is created or not. Were you trying to ask or tell me anything else beyond that? Liamyangll (talk to me! | My contribs!) 07:33, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
No, what I wanted was to relate what I thought about this. Since you were the one who put a message about it in Talk:Dalas Review, I decided to mention it to you.--Germanico5468504 (talk) 14:43, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
Oh, well that's all well and fine then. Thanks for letting me know. Liamyangll (talk to me! | My contribs!) 00:06, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

Happy Holidays!

@Justiyaya: Thanks so much, and I'm sorry I couldn't reply to you sooner - I was without a computer for the duration of my holiday so editing was difficult  . I hope you had a good Christmas (if you celebrate) and are enjoying the new year. Liamyangll (talk to me! | My contribs!) 04:17, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks and welcome, hope you enjoyed the holidays and the wikibreak too :D Justiyaya 04:29, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

Trouted

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

You have been trouted for: YOUR REASON HERE — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:3d09:7a80:a700:c578:74dc:6b3a:b951 (talk) 17:13, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

You're a wanker who just deletes information people submit to wiki. What secret service agency do you edit for? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:3d09:7a80:a700:c578:74dc:6b3a:b951 (talk) 17:35, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

@2604:3d09:7a80:a700:c578:74dc:6b3a:b951: I don't edit for any organisations or agencies, and I'm certainly not part of the Wikimedia Foundation - I edit for myself because I enjoy it, like most of our editors. Let me just clarify a few things for you:
1: Of course, anyone may submit information to Wikipedia - provided that they fit our policies and guidelines. Your edits may have been reverted (possibly by me, I don't know which edits you're specifically referring to) because they did not conform to the above. If you need clarification on which information you're talking about that was deleted, please let me know.
2: Civility is very important here at Wikipedia. Your tone of writing does not imply good intention towards me, which will not help the situation you are trying to solve. Name-calling and accusations are not acceptable when talking to others - see WP:IUC, WP:AGF and WP:NPA for more information on that. Please try to be more respectful to others in discussion next time; it will make things a lot smoother. Repeatedly making personal attacks could lead to a block.
3: You seem to remove your IP address every time you sign your comments, leaving only the time and date. I understand any privacy concerns you may have, but be aware that we still know who contributed to what edit simply from the revision history of that page (see here for a basic rundown of a page's history). Removing your IP means we need to track down who to reply to, which makes our work more cumbersome. Please just sign using ~~~~ next time, and don't bother removing any part of that signature; no one will intrude on your privacy. If you're still concerned, you can create an account to edit under, which will hide your IP address.
I hope this clears up any ambiguity you had. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me further (although we could do without the hostility) or visit the Teahouse. Thank you, Liamyangll (talk to me! | My contribs!) 01:26, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

How to fix links running through local proxies when citing The Wikipedia Library?

It's almost embarrassing that I have to seek help on a page that I use to help others (but I understand every editor needs help sometimes), but I was trying to draft my own article (Draft:Alexis Krot) and got a bit stuck trying to cite an EBSCO resource I found through The Wikipedia Library. I could not fix the URL such that it was a direct link. Does anyone have some advice or a way to fix these links properly? Liamyangll (talk to me! | My contribs!) 10:12, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

This is what was in Wayback if it helps. http://web.archive.org/web/20170508192331/https://milawyersweekly.com/news/2016/08/04/judge-named-in-hamtramck-district-court/ It's only one sentence, not what you wanted I guess. Selfstudier (talk) 11:23, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
@Selfstudier: I was thinking that maybe I could find a copy of the page on some kind of web archive but didn't really know where to start. You're right, one sentence seems a bit lacking to go into my draft. Thanks for trying to help, though, I really appreciate it.   Liamyangll (talk to me! | My contribs!) 12:07, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Question from OiKattoi (08:39, 5 April 2022)

I'm having trouble having my first article published. The article is "OiKattoi" --OiKattoi (talk) 08:39, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

This is the page: User:OiKattoi/sandbox/Oi Kattoi
How do I take this live? OiKattoi (talk) 08:40, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi OiKattoi, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for volunteering to write an article. If you're sure your article's ready (maybe check WP:YFA one last time), it would probably be best to let it go through the Articles for Creation (AfC) process before publishing it, to let reviewers check whether it's all good to go or not.
I would recommend moving your article from your userspace to draftspace, as that's the place where most new articles start and get reviewed. To do this, hover over the "More" button near the top, and click "Move". Move the page to Draft:Oi Kattoi with a reason "AfC submission" or something similar. Then, you can submit your article.
  • If you're using the VisualEditor, click "Insert", then "Template", type "Submit" and click the first option that appears, and add the "user" parameter and fill it with your username.
  • If you're using the source editor, add the text {{subst:Submit|OiKattoi}} to the top of the page.
Both of these will insert the template onto your draft page, which will submit your article for review. Please be patient during this process as it can take a while - there are often a lot of articles to be reviewed at the same time. You can feel free to keep working on it while you wait.
I hope that answers your question. If you're still not sure, don't hesitate to keep asking me here, or go to the Teahouse or Help desk to contact other experienced users (as I'm not particularly focused on creating articles here on Wikipedia). Thanks, Liamyangll (talk to me!) 10:53, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

Question from Zainab Shoukat (07:34, 16 April 2022)

Hi, I have published content in the sandbox from where I can see my published article, and is the published article is show on Wikipedia or it is just for practice? --Zainab Shoukat (talk) 07:34, 16 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi Zainab Shoukat, and Welcome to Wikipedia! It depends on which sandbox you were editing. Looking at your contributions, it seems you were editing Draft:Sandbox, which is a public sandbox. All public sandboxes are just for practice and will be cleared every so often, so nothing entered there will be permanent. That doesn't mean your content is lost, though - you can recover most of it here. More information about sandboxes is available here.
If you want to draft articles or practice editing somewhere where your content won't be deleted, consider creating your own sandbox at User:Zainab Shoukat/sandbox. However, if you want to start creating real Wikipedia articles, you should read WP:YFA and WP:AFC first, which give you a lot of important information on creating articles and getting them reviewed. If you have any other questions, feel free to reply to me here. Thanks, Liamyangll (talk to me!) 10:52, 16 April 2022 (UTC)
