Welcome! edit

Hi, LSB, Welcome to Wikipedia!

Thank you for your contributions, you seem to be off to a good start. Hopefully you will soon join the vast army of Wikipediholics! If you need help on how to title new articles see the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. For general questions goto Wikipedia:Help or the FAQ, if you can't find your answer there check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. If you have any more questions after that, feel free to ask me directly on my user talk page.

Please pick another name edit

We don't allow the usage of celebrities' names as User names. User:Zoe|(talk) 04:47, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Ahem, this is my real life name. Just because a celebrity has the same name doesn't mean they can copyright it. LaShawn Barber 04:51, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Policy on usernames doesn't list celebrity names as being forbidden. Please excuse me if I'm incorrect as per my reading of Wikipedia:Username#Inappropriate_usernames. What if a celebrity all of a sudden surfaced with the name Zoe, or any other regular user for that matter? I've unblocked this user. -- Longhair 04:55, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

OK, I'm going to assume good faith. Sorry I blocked you, and welcome to Wikipedia. User:Zoe|(talk) 05:00, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've reblocked. The real-life La Shawn Barber (note spelling) has some kind of quarrel with Wikipedia, going so far as to block the external link to her blog from our Wikipedia article about her. Thus the use of this particular celebrity name is particularly sensitive. It's a fairly distinctive name and the user's claim of this being a real life name is really rather unlikely. -- Curps 08:26, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've unblocked, and will keep an eye on the user's contribs. I disagree that it's so uncommon. But, La Shawn, it would definitely save you hassle to choose another name. FreplySpang (talk) 03:23, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
How would I go about it? Maybe I'll add some numbers at the end. This way it will still be my name, but it'll look like a chat room name rather than some celebrity's name. LaShawn Barber 03:27, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, unfortunately, any time you have "LaShawn Barber" in it, some people will probably think you're trying to impersonate the famous blogger. The easiest thing would be to use a name like "LSB" or "LaShawn" or even something like "Scribe of the Vashta" that's totally unrelated to your actual name. If you do pick a new name, just log out, and then create an account the same way you created this one. By the way, I looked up your name: According to the Social Security Administration, "LaShawn" was in the top 1000 female baby names in the US from 1966 to 1982, peaking at #431 in 1971. There are lots of LaShawns out there! :) FreplySpang (talk) 03:35, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
That's an awesome fact. It's great to know that my parents chose a popular name for their baby. I think I'd like "LSB", but I'd hate to lose the edits I have made so far. Is there a way to just change the name I currently have without losing the edits I've made? LaShawn Barber 03:40, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes! You can request it at Wikipedia:Changing username. FreplySpang (talk) 03:45, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've made the request at [1]. Thank you very much for everything. You have been very helpful. LaShawn Barber 03:57, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
