Earlier Eurovision by Year articles edit

Hi Kapitan,

I noticed you updated the returning artists section on ESC 1998. There was an exercise approx 2 years ago where I was rolling out the new layout style on annual Eurovision articles, the returning artists section was being moved towards the top of articles and in written prose (rather than table) format. I managed to get through 1956 to 1979, and 2011 (2012 onwards were already in the new style). However, I was unable to complete the task due to my volunteering at London 2012. And thus the articles from 1980 to 2010 were left unfinished. If you wish to assist the project in completing the task whilst you're undergoing maintenance work, then you are more than welcome to do so. This is the skeleton template based on the layout change agreed back in May 2012. Wes Mᴥuse 05:34, 1 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Eurovision - consensus discussion edit

12 point table debate edit

I've closed the debate for 12 point tables at WT:ESC. It seems those tables are not allowed whatsoever. It's a complexed issue with WP:NOTSTATSBOOK and WP:TRIVIA, with no loop-hole that would allows use to get out of it. Listing 12 points only, means we're leaving out the other point trends, which would mean we'd have to show every point given from 1 - 12. And we can't do that as we'd end up violating WP:NOTSTATSBOOK by having excessive tables of statistics. Leaving 12-points on their own makes it trivial statistics. So we've been left with no other option but to delete them all. I felt disheartened because it took me an hour just to do that example on the talk page. And I feel more sorry for Karlwhen who created them all in the first place. Although saying that, he was told a while back not to go ahead and create them, until we knew of a loop-hole. Anyhow, I've left him a note so he is aware of the reasons why they're removed.

Apparently the flagicons that were used on the hosting's section of country articles were also a violation of WP:ICONDECORATION, and we were told to remove them also. All these policies are now making me extra cautious. What else have we implemented that could be violating a manual of style policy!? I dread to know. Wouldn't surprise me if we get told next that we're limited on how many colour-codes we're suppose to use. And they say this is an encyclopaedia, and that we are welcomed to look at ways to improve it. Apparently not! I'm off to have a sulk. Wes Mᴥuse 11:10, 3 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Oh heck, there is a policy on colour. See WP:COLOUR. I give up! We try our best to improve things, and then there's some poxy policy that prevents us from doing our best. Wes Mᴥuse 11:21, 3 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
I saw that, and I was annoyed as you. I got the sense, without being too judgmental that the people you contacted probably don't watch a lot of Eurovision, or if they do have pretty clear views on it. The definition of "trivia" is highly debatable, but since receiving 12 points from a country means that they regard your song as the best in the contest, I would hardly call it "trivial". And as I said, voting trends are amongst the most talked about part of the contest, and those tables are easy ways of giving a basic knowledge of what trends existed. I've been thinking of saving the data or the tables anyway, not just so I can use it personally from time-to-time (I study a bit on the contest), but also because opinions may change in the future once the pages expand.
Thanks for all your work and investigating, Wes, it was good we got the bottom of that :). Kapitan110295 (talk) 11:53, 3 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
You know there is a way around it. Although not on Wikipedia, of course. Have you heard of Wikia? It's a similar site to Wikipedia, created by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. The exception to Wikia is there are no strict policies, and users are allowed to create pages to store statistics etc. So we'd be able to re-create Eurovision material on there (without sources) and show voting trends. And if people were to google up for voting trends, then the Wikia site would show top of the google list. Here's the website, if you wish to investigate it further. Invitation to Adelaide Wikipedia Users Group meetings edit

Hi, in case you're not already aware of it, a group of Adelaide Wikipedians has been meeting on a monthly basis since April, with the aim of improving the scope and quality of articles on South Australian topics. We meet at UniSA's City West campus, and our 23 July meeting will have a guest speaker from the National Trust of SA.

This coming Sunday, 6 July, we will be holding our first Edit-a-thon. This will be an opportunity for new editors to come and learn either basic or more advanced editing from very experienced wikipedians, so if you know anyone who would like to get some practice, please let them know - and beginners will be very welcome. WikiProject Eurovision: Important Announcement edit

WikiProject Eurovision
Important Announcement

Dear Project Member

Following a project community discussion, which was raised over the use of English translation columns on annual contest articles, and advice from the lead coordinator of The Guild of Copy Editors, who are extremely knowledgeable in regards to all editing practises and manual of style policies. A consensus decision has been reached to fully remove ALL English translations, as such content falls under the prohibition on original research, even if it seems helpful to the reader. This is because we have now to assume that every reader has access to automated translation tools that can always give them a sense of the meaning of the title in their native language; it is not Wikipedia's job to provide those tools for the reader. Which therefore means we are no longer to include an English translation column, nor are we to provide translation by any other means on contest articles.

Such information is currently in the process of being removed, and a new table formatting and layout style is being rolled out across all articles. Please view the new guidance on table layout at Wikipedia:WikiProject Eurovision/Format and Guides#Article layout. An example of the new table layout style can also be access via the collapsed section within this message. Thank you.

Episode summaries edit

Hello, I've once again reverted your lengthy episode summaries at Australian Survivor (season 4). As I explained the first time, WP:TVPLOT makes clear that these type of episode summaries should not be lengthy, regardless of the episode's runtime. To quote, "...plot summaries of no more than 200 words per episode..." and all versions of the summaries you wrote well exceeded this limit. The first episode's summary as written, for example, clocks in at 195 words. Thus, there isn't room to add. Summaries are just that - summaries - not a blow-by-blow description of everything that happened in the episode. -- Whats new?(talk) 00:31, 29 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

(Response copied from my talk page to keep discussion in one place) I must ask why you haven't deleted the summaries made for Australian Survivor (season 3)? They are consistent with those made for the US version - the summary written for the last episode alone is more than 500 words, and the summary of the first ever episode is more than 300. All I was trying to do was make the page of the latest season of Australian Survivor consistent to all the others, at the moment it looks ugly and incomplete. If you're unhappy with the summaries maybe we should remove the Episodes subheading altogether. And also I would hardly call what I wrote a blow-by-blow analysis of the episode, it completely conforms with every other plot summary written for the Survivor episodes. Kapitan110295 (talk) 01:13, 29 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
I was unaware of the length of summaries at the season 3 article. I don't cast my eye over every article all the time! In any case, the MOS at WP:TVPLOT is clear. There will always be examples where some wriggle room is given, but the summaries as they stand on the season 4 page are perfectly fine - my objection was to your additions which clocked in at 635 words for episode 1 - more than triple both the limit and existing text. Just because OTHER STUFF EXISTS is not rationale for violating guidelines in this article. -- Whats new?(talk) 02:22, 29 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
