Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Flag of Singapore

It has begun. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 08:18, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Another Singapore-related article, Toa Payoh ritual murders, is also on FAC, but we know that it is nearly impossible for Singapore-related articles to achieve FA status (just ask Mailer diablo). If I were you, I would form a copyediting team, compromising at least three copyeditors with significant experience at the FA level. (Do Tony1-proof copyeditors exist?) Otherwise the only way for the article to pass FAC would be for Tony1 to 被车撞死. --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 05:03, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
That isn't the main concern now. The main problem is no one is even looking at it lor. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 05:42, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Jacklee!

圣诞节快乐,新年快乐! Hope you are enjoying the holiday season. 我不想回去那个每个人都曾经坐过的监牢。Congratulations on Edwin Thumboo and Tang Da Wu achieving GA status! Did you know that if Denise Phua also passes GA, we will have 40 Singapore-related GAs?

I hope to quickly bring the Yip Pin Xiu dispute to a close. Could you please accept the final compromise I have proposed? Then I could take the article to PR and GAN before school eats up my time. If you do not respond by Friday morning, I will have to claim a walkover.

--J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 09:02, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm, a greeting and a threat ... :-) OK, will have a look at it later today. Happy new year to you too! — Cheers, JackLee talk 19:23, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
Dispute resolved! Yip Pin Xiu is currently on peer review, while I have filed a GA nomination for I Not Stupid Too. In about a week, you will see my latest masterpiece: Murder of Huang Na! --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 04:46, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Several questions about Factiva

  • How do they handle large queries with thousands of (or even several hundred) results? Will all the newspaper articles be in a single, huge attachment, that could crash my computer? Or will there be many attachments, each containing a smaller number (for example, 100) of newspaper articles?
  • Are you able to specify a date range (for example, January 2004 to June 2005) in your search, so only newspaper articles published during that period appear in the results?
  • Can Factiva search for keywords in Chinese, returning articles from Chinese newspapers?

The answers will help me make things easier for both of us when I pester you for Factiva searches in future. For example, it may be useful to search Factiva for "郑智允" (she is better known by her Chinese name) or limit a search to a specific date range (to eliminate false positives).

--J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 12:52, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi!
  • Results. I'm not sure what happens if Factiva retrieves large numbers of results. I suspect there is probably some upper limit to the number of results that can be retrieved, but it is certainly in the hundreds. The easiest way is to request for all the results to be retrieved in one web page, which can then be saved. I have tried retrieving and saving individual files before, but this is very slow and for some reason Factiva does not detect this as activity and has logged me out during the process.
  • Date range. It's not possible to state a specific date range. Instead, one has to choose from options such as "last three months", "last six months", "last year", etc., or "all dates".
  • Chinese search terms. I tried using "郑智允" as a search term and got zero results. However, using "" as a search term did pull out a handful of results, so it may be possible to use non-English search terms. All search results seem to be in English, though.
— Cheers, JackLee talk 16:45, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
So Factiva cannot search Chinese newspapers or return results from a specific date range? That sucks. But thanks for replying! After writing about Murder of Huang Na, I plan to write about Singaporean international footballer Noh Alam Shah. I remember that last year, another friend helped me search Factiva for newspaper articles about him; there were over 1200 results, dating back to August 2001. However, his professional football career started in 1998 (with Sembawang Rangers). Perhaps you could help me do a Factiva search? I expect plenty of results from 2008 and before August 2001. --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 16:40, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
Have discovered that Factiva only allows 100 articles to be selected at a time, so that limits the size of each file. Noh Alam Shah – OK, no problem. — Cheers, JackLee talk 14:15, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

The National Day Project

Hello, Jacklee! Did you realise our 18-month FA drought has been broken with Jappalang's Toa Payoh ritual murders achieving FA status? Now the onus is on Zscout370 (and you) to take Flag of Singapore past FAC, while hopefully the third time will be the charm for Mailer diablo's Odex's actions against file-sharing. The previous FAC for Flag of Singapore failed due to lack of reviews, but after a little trimming, a thorough copyedit and a couple more peer reviews, it should be ready for another FAC. Such polishing would not take up too much of your time.

So perhaps you could write a GA about Singapore in Malaysia? I believe you would not have too much difficulty writing such a history-related GA within five months. If you succeed, the article will appear in On this day not just on 9 August 2009, but on 9 August every year. Hence this article is central to our National Day Project.

Unfortunately, writing a GA about about Jack Neo or Noh Alam Shah would not be feasible, due to the limitations of the Factiva database. My current plan is to write GAs on Xiaxue and Pathlight School as well as DYKs on William Tan and the Hello Kitty craze (both will be nominated for GA after appearing on DYK). Of course, I must determine that all four are viable GAs. As for the other two DYKs, we would have to rope in Zscout370, Mailer diablo, Aldwinteo or even Marcuslim. Hopefully we can finalise our plans by the end of February.

--J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 15:10, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Hmmm, let me think about that. "Singapore in Malaysia" sounds like a major undertaking. — Cheers, JackLee talk 18:50, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Tang Da Wu's Untitled removed from article

Hi Jack, happy new year. I hadn't realise you're putting the article up for GA status, so I apologise for any disruptions caused to the article. Having said that, the contribution painting Untitled was removed, and you've stated in your comments insufficient fair-use justification for new image (not referred to in article at all). I thought of placing it in your article in the gallery column to display his repertoire of works created over the years, and now i don't understand how it doesn't help with the article. Perhaps you can advise me, before i take any other action to delete the painting altogether. Thanks -- Marcuslim (talk) 05:38, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Marcus, I've replied on the article's talk page. — Cheers, JackLee talk 06:03, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Category:Gravestones in Singapore

I notice that this category you created is unpopulated (empty). In other words, no Wikipedia pages belong to it. If it remains unpopulated for four days, it may be deleted, without discussion, in accordance with Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#C1. I'm notifying you in case you wish to (re-)populate it by adding [[Category:Gravestones in Singapore]] to articles/categories that belong in it.

I blanked the category page. This will not, in itself, cause the category to be deleted. It serves to document (in the page history) that the category was empty at the time of blanking and also to alert other watchers that the category is in jeopardy. You are welcome to revert the blanking if you wish. However, doing so will not prevent deletion if the category remains empty.

If you created the category in error, or it is no longer needed, you can speed up the deletion process by tagging it with {{db-author}}.

Best regards,--Stepheng3 (talk) 04:33, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Done. Sorry, I created the category by mistake, thinking that I was doing so in the Wikimedia Commons. — Cheers, JackLee talk 06:12, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:1993-ApplicationofEnglishLawAct-titlepg.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:1993-ApplicationofEnglishLawAct-titlepg.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 07:51, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Cabinet of Singapore

Hi, I am reviewing your article Cabinet of Singapore for GA and have one question at Talk:Cabinet of Singapore/GA1 about an issue that is confusing me. Perhaps you can straigten out my thinking so that I can continue the review. Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 01:02, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

GA Reassessment of Trafalgar Square

Just a note to let you know that an article you have contributed significantly to has been put on hold following its GA Sweeps reassessment, which can be found here. --Malleus Fatuorum 15:53, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Government of Singapore

I left some comments about your DYK nomination Government of Singapore, including a possible alternate hook; if you have a moment, please take a look to make sure it's accurate. Thanks, rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 20:54, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

New article: Murder of Huang Na

Hey, Jacklee! I noticed that (assuming your userpage is up-to-date) you have written 15 Singapore-related GAs, just one short of Aldwinteo's tally of 16, and should overtake him pretty soon! You guys are a real inspiration and I wish to be a prolific SGpedian GA writer too!

You may have noticed my latest GA-to-be, Murder of Huang Na, which I just moved to mainspace yesterday (I worked on it in a user sandbox for two weeks). What do you think of it? Perhaps you could place those project templates on the talk page, so I know which WikiProjects to canvass for the peer review I plan to file tomorrow? Thank you very much!

P.S. I noticed that Poh Ern Shih Temple has attained GA status but is still rated B-class on both talk page project templates; please correct that too.

Choor Singh

Hi, I was going to review Choor Singh for GA, but then I discovered that most of the reference citations result in an error page. eg. http://www.webcitation.org/5fn4qxiFI for the reference: Khushwant Singh (2 April 2009), "Retired judge Choor Singh dies at 98", The Straits Times (reproduced on Singapore Law Watch): B3.

I don't know what causes this, but it should be fixed before the article can be reviewed. Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 15:46, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Mattisse. I was distressed to hear about this, because the archived links were all working at the time I created them using WebCite. WebCite was recently down for the purpose of server upgrading, and the problem may be linked to that. See [1]. I will e-mail WebCite and tell them about the problem. The original links should be working fine. Could you review the article in the meantime? — Cheers, JackLee talk 16:05, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
Hi Jacklee, I think you are right and it is due to some problem with WebCite, as I saw this mentioned regarding another article a while ago. Is there some way you could replace the links without WebCite? Meanwhile, I can review the article. Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 14:20, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
I have e-mailed WebCite but have yet to receive a response. Can I suggest that you ignore the WebCite links at the moment? The original links should be working fine. For example, in the reference "Singapore Management University launches Centre for Cross-Cultural Studies: Justice Choor Singh kicks off launch with $140,000 donation to Centre, Singapore Management University, 18 January 2001, archived from the original on 4 April 2009, retrieved 4 April 2009", if you click the link on the words "the original" you should be able to access the original website. I will monitor the situation, and if there doesn't appear to be a way to retrieve the original archived pages I will either remove them or re-archive them. — Cheers, JackLee talk 15:25, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
It is hoped that the present problems with the Webcite archival links will be sorted out in due time. See the discussion at "Wikipedia talk:Citing sources#Apparent loss of data by WebCite". — Cheers, JackLee talk 06:08, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, the Webcite problem is fixed and I have added a bit more to Talk:Choor Singh/GA1. I think the article passes the GA criteria but I think the article could be improved if it were easier to read. It is very well referenced and contains much information. I was trying to think of ways that the elements of his history and accomplishments could stand out more. Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 19:22, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Are you done with the article? Or are there things that you are still going to work on? Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 20:02, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
No, still working on it. — Cheers, JackLee talk 20:16, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
OK. Let me know when. —Mattisse (Talk) 20:18, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Are you done with this article? I would like to pass it but I need to know. Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 23:47, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
I am actually abroad travelling again, so I haven't been able to work on it. Let me see if I can get something done this weekend, otherwise would you prefer that I renominate it later? — Cheers, JackLee talk 11:14, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
I can fail the article. And you could renominate it. (I like the article and I don't think much needs to be done to it to fix it up.) Would you rather that I do that, so that you don't have to worry about it now? Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 19:07, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
OK, then. Will drop you a note on your talk page if you would like to review it after renomination. — Cheers, JackLee talk 01:55, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

GA Review of Government of Singapore

Hi, I have reviewed the above and placed it on hold for seven days. You may see my concerns at Talk:Government of Singapore/GA1. Cheers. Jezhotwells (talk) 20:36, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Hey, Jacklee! How have you been? Congratulations on Government of Singapore's promotion to GA status! I just thought I'd drop by to remind you that the GA review of Choor Singh has stalled for over a month. Flag of Singapore

We need to find a live link for the main Rules R 1 for the Arms Flags and Anthem Act. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 05:50, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Haven't been able to locate one, I'm afraid. We may just have to remove the external link for the time being, thus referring readers to the print version. — Cheers, JackLee talk 20:13, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
I tried to check my files, nothing on my end either. Try emailing government offices for a PDF copy; I can put it on the Commons or Wikisource.
