Jethro Sumner edit

I apologize for my sloth in evaluating the above. Being new to the process, I was conscientously fumbling my way through, giving the article multiple readings and taking offline notes. A more proficient reviewer "played through", so to speak.

I did learn some interesting facts about the Revolution in the process. I thank you for the article that exposed me to them.

Georgejdorner (talk) 21:14, 4 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

@Georgejdorner:: George, many thanks for your review. Right now I'm close to having all three supports, so if you have any other comments or critiques, please make them and I will try to address them. If there's nothing else you see that needs to be addressed, you might want to close out your review (by either supporting or saying "no further comments") so another reviewer doesn't think that your review is still ongoing. I'm glad to see some new people stepping in to review! Keep at it. Cdtew (talk) 13:14, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just so I keep above-board, if you disagree that it's of A-class quality, feel free to "Oppose". I'm not lobbying for your support, just trying to help you get used to the system. Cdtew (talk) 13:16, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I am such a greenhorn at this that I did not realize that you needed more than one approval for an A-class assessment. I thought another editor had beaten me to the approval.

Georgejdorner (talk) 15:16, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

@Georgejdorner:: Not a problem! ACR generally takes supports from three reviewers who performed fairly comprehensive reviews. You can also specialize in reviewing certain things: Prose (style & spelling); Images (free use tags, captions, formatting); Citation (footnotes and bibliography, as well as spot-checking information in sources); Formatting (MOS compliance, etc.); or you can do like I do and just assess everything together. After you've completed your review, you can Support, Oppose, or state that you're weakly supporting or weakly opposing something due to one issue that hasn't been resolved. Hope this helps! Cdtew (talk) 15:23, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not about rating the article...just a general question. Can you tell me, or refer me to, any further information about conscription during the Revolution? I had always thought it a practice that only began during the Civil War.

My thanks in advance.

Georgejdorner (talk) 19:55, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'll have to dig through my sources, but there were several states with enforced militia service for white, "unscrupulous" (ie: non-Quakers), adult men. There wasn't a federal (or Congressional) draft, but there also wasn't effectively a Centralized recruitment effort. Recruitment of all Continental soldiers was done at the state level. I'll let you know if I find anything. Cdtew (talk) 02:13, 6 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

As a native Marylander, I had a great deal of Revolutionary War history dinned into me. I am familiar with the scattered recruitment practices for American troops. It's just that I have never before heard of conscription during that era. The earliest use of conscription I know of is by the Confederacy in 1862.

Review of interest edit

Since you participated in the review of Tadeusz Kościuszko for GA and/or A-classes, you may be interested in Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Tadeusz Kościuszko/archive1 (at this point there are few substantial comments there, and the article is likely to be failed due to lack of community's interest). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 14:35, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Piotrus, I am happy to take a look. I was generally satisfied with the way things went in ACR, and had I realized it had been nominated, I would have added my support long ago. Cdtew (talk) 14:46, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

WP:FOUR RFC edit

There are two WP:RFCs at WP:FOUR. The first is to conflate issues so as to keep people from expressing meaningful opinions. The second, by me, is claimed to be less than neutral by proponents of the first. Please look at the second one, which I think is much better.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 06:19, 20 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Fun at Big Brother 15? edit

Having fun, yet? :) I've made an page protection request - mostly to deal with the child pornography comment problem (although it will indirectly help with some of the edit warring problem). Gotta love trying to keep some order on articles about popular and controversial reality shows! Singularity42 (talk) 03:39, 22 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

WT:FOUR edit

I know you're probably tired of this (I'm getting fed up too), but as Tony seems to be implying that you are a racist (he uses the word four five times in opposing the proposed closure you made) you may want to comment at WT:FOUR. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:55, 30 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Article review edit

Your memory must be better than mine, I can't find any article of yours I've reviewed (or vice versa). Could you drop me a reminder? Sorry for partially being responsible for ruining your morning. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:46, 30 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

@Crisco 1492: No, you didn't ruin my morning. I thought you had reviewed an article of mine, but I could be entirely mistaken. In fact, looking through my stuff I see I was mistaken. Sorry! I don't know why I thought you had. By the by, I'm a lawyer, so all of my mornings are like this, just usually not about me. Cdtew (talk) 13:50, 30 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • No kidding. Alright, well I'm going to try and avoid the horse at ANI for now... hopefully when Tony's block expires he's ready to apologize. (BTW, watchlisted) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:59, 30 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Another mention at AN here. Not a particularly high-profile mention, but I figured I should follow protocol. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:32, 1 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • No, I didn't, but it doesn't surprise me. He seems to think he'll walk in and "valiantly return the prodigal children to their rightful home" or some pseudo-heroic thing like that. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:04, 2 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

MilHist Coordinator Election 2013 edit

Hi there, just letting you know I think you'd make a fine addition to the coord team if you're interested -- you'd just have to nominate here... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 05:07, 6 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

@Ian Rose: Ian, thank for your vote of confidence. I would love to help out in any way I can, but would be worried that my IRL job (lawyer) may at times make it harder for me to contribute. Additionally, I respect all of the current Leads/Coordinators, so I don't want to step on anyone's toes by competing for anything. I may lay low a little while longer and throw my hat in the ring if the field looks thin. Cdtew (talk) 13:59, 6 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough, I know you'll continue to contribute in a positive way whenever you can, whether a coord or not. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 14:44, 6 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ian, after seeing that one of the sitting coords chose not to run again, I figured I might as well sign up. I'm open to any questions you may have, and I appreciate you bringing this opportunity to my attention. Cdtew (talk) 17:25, 11 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Signpost edit

Hey Clark, I hope you're well! After reading your Milhist coordinator nomination statement (esp. "I want to be more involved in the community"), I was curious to know if you'd be interested in contributing to the Signpost's "Featured content" section, which summarizes the English Wikipedia's new featured material on a weekly basis. The two people currently involved are looking to do the "Discussion report" (Pine) and trying to balance their time between other Wikimedia roles (Hahc21). In addition to the summaries, you'll have editorial independence to seek out underappreciated topic areas and editors to tell their stories to a relatively wide readership on the English Wikipedia and around the Wikimedia movement. Feel free to take some time to think it over (if needed) and get back to me when you can! Thanks, Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 14:38, 22 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Having formerly done it (for almost a year) I'll let you know it took me perhaps 3 to 5 hours a week, depending on the amount of FC and if I interviewed someone or not. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:41, 22 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • @The ed17: I would be happy to pitch in! Would I be going at this solo, or would there be assistance from those already doing the job? My two caveats are that I may need some lead-in time to get up to speed, and my sometimes volatile work schedule would make it helpful if there were others who could cover for me in the rare event I get overwhelmed. I appreciate you thinking of me for this, and look forward to helping. Cdtew (talk) 20:35, 23 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • That's great! You will be working with Hahc21 (talk · contribs) when he's free, and hopefully at least one other editor if I can tempt them into doing it (suggestions welcome!). Pine (talk · contribs) can assist at times but would rather focus on the discussion report. I'm sure both will be happy to help with getting you acclimated to the regular format. :-) You're free to start on this week's edition, which will hopefully be published early Friday UTC, or next week. • Nice! Cdtew, I'd be more than glad to help you on all FC-related. I will be, of course, helping you every week with the report. Although I like to think that we will be helping each other :] — ΛΧΣ21 05:10, 26 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • The ed17 Thanks for recruiting. Hahc21 are you still planning to write FLs for this week? Cdtew could do FAs. --Pine 05:54, 26 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • @Pine:: I will have them today :] — ΛΧΣ21 14:51, 26 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • @Hahc21: I've gotten 7/12 done by now; I'll attempt the rest tonight, but if I don't finish them then, I may need some help. I am traveling all day tomorrow to a wedding in another state. Also, since this is my first go-round, I'd appreciate any constructive/destructive criticism, and feel free to edit my contributions as much as needed. Cdtew (talk) 15:08, 26 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Don't worry. Do as much as you are able to, and I'll do the rest. I will be able to do so tonights after all the work I have awaiting for me is done. Cheers! — ΛΧΣ21 18:41, 26 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Good job with the report. You wrote longer descriptions than necessary but the extra detail is good. Hahc21 do you think you and Cdtew can do the job without me next week so I can get back to DR? --Pine 07:09, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Just a quick poke on this; it'll be a short one this week. :-) We normally coordinate by email, if that works for you—feel free to send me one at the.ed17 gmail if you'd like! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 06:58, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • @The ed17: Thanks for the poke; I've been in depositions all week, and I was traveling this past weekend; I will be able to get to this tonight, I believe. Cdtew (talk) 10:44, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've done some work, but since this is only my second try at this, I hope someone will look at it and tell me if I did anything boneheaded, or if the title I made is too stupid. Cdtew (talk) 03:26, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Clark, that actually looks great! :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 13:23, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

@King jakob c 2: Jakob, see my notes on the GA page. I think at this point I think it'll be worth it to fail the GA for now, and to give you some thoughts to improve. I think biggest issue is structure and the style; one thing that's not an issue is your drive and passion for the subject. Keep those things, and you'll get this improved well enough. Please let me know if I can help out in any way. Cdtew (talk) 01:33, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

FA congratulations edit

Just a quick note to congratulate you on the promotion of Francis Nash to FA status recently. If you would like to see this (or any other FA you may have helped to write) appear as "Today's featured article" soon, please nominate it at the requests page; if you'd like to see an FA on a particular date in the next year or so, please add it to the "pending" list. In the absence of a request, the article may end up being picked at any time (although with 1,327 articles in Category:Featured articles that have not appeared on the main page at present, there's no telling how long – or short! – the wait might be). If you'd got any TFA-related questions or problems, please let me know. Thanks, BencherliteTalk 10:12, 26 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

At Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Spanish conquest of Petén, the closer probably just forgot to check for new comments before he ran his closing script. Simon will probably respond to your comments anyway, and when he does, even though that page is archived, if you're satisfied, you can change to support "for the record", or ask for it to be re-opened if there are problems. - Dank (push to talk) 12:58, 3 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Would you be interested in a small, focused meetup? I'm interested in putting some energy into closing a series of RfCs on issues that have been annoying both the community and the WMF for some time now, and I'd appreciate some feedback. Also, it's just sad that I haven't made more of an effort to get some face time with NC Wikipedians. - Dank (push to talk) 18:16, 29 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Flow testing edit

Hey Cdtew :). As mentioned on the Milhist coordinators talkpage, we've opened Flow up for community testing. I'd be really grateful if you could hammer on the system (if you haven't already!), let me know any bugs you find, and leave a note at the 'first release' page explaining what you, as a member of Wikiproject Military History, would need to see to be okay with it being deployed on that wikiproject's talkpage.

Main Page appearance: Robert Howe (Continental Army officer) edit

This is a note to let the main editors of Robert Howe (Continental Army officer) know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 29, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 29, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Robert Howe (1732–86) was a Continental Army general from North Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. He was one of only five general officers, and the only major general, in the Continental Army from that state. At the outset of the war, he was appointed a brigadier general in the Continental Army, and eventually became commander of the Southern Department. His early military career was contentious and consumed by conflict with political and military leaders in Georgia and South Carolina. These confrontations, including a 1778 duel with Christopher Gadsden, and Howe's reputation as a womanizer eventually led to his removal from command over the Southern Department. Prior to the formal turnover of his command, Howe commanded the Continental Army and Patriot militia forces in defeat in the First Battle of Savannah. He later sat as a senior officer on the court-martial board that sentenced British officer John André, a co-conspirator of Benedict Arnold, to death. Howe himself was accused of attempting to defect to the British, but the accusations were cast aside at the time as a British stratagem. He died in December 1786 after being elected to the North Carolina House of Commons. (Full article...)

March Madness 2017 edit

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting edit

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. User group for Military Historians edit

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

Hi Clark, hope all is well. I know it may be a few months before you see this, no rush. In the linked section of WT:TFA, I was searching for an example to support a point I was trying to make, and I remembered that we talked about the Hogun article briefly ... if what I'm saying doesn't match your recollection, please let me know. - Dank (push to talk) 17:46, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive edit

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Peer review newsletter #1 edit

Introduction edit

Hello to all! I do not intend to write a regular peer review newsletter but there does occasionally come a time when those interested in contributing to peer review should be contacted, and now is one. I've mailed this out to everyone on the peer review volunteers list, and some editors that have contributed to past discussions. Apologies if I've left you off or contacted you and you didn't want it. Next time there is a newsletter / mass message it will be opt in (here), I'll talk about this below - but first:

  • THANK YOU! I want to thank you for your contributions and for volunteering on the list to help out at peer review. Thank you!
  • Peer review is useful! It's good to have an active peer review process. This is often the way that we help new or developing editors understand our ways, and improve the quality of their editing - so it fills an important and necessary gap between the teahouse (kindly introduction to our Wikiways) and GA and FA reviews (specific standards uphelp according to a set of quality criteria). And we should try and improve this process where possible (automate, simplify) so it can be used and maintained easily.

Updates edit

It can get quite lonely tinkering with peer review...
With a bit of effort we can renovate the place to look like this!

Update #1: the peer review volunteers list is changing edit

The list is here in case you've forgotten: WP:PRV. Kadane has kindly offered to create a bot that will ping editors on the volunteers list with unanswered reviews in their chosen subject areas every so often. You can choose the time interval by changing the "contact" parameter. Options are "never", "monthly", "quarterly", "halfyearly", and "annually". For example:

  • {{PRV|JohnSmith|History of engineering|contact=monthly}} - if placed in the "History" section, JohnSmith will receive an automatic update every month about unanswered peer reviews relating to history.
  • {{PRV|JaneSmith|Mesopotamian geography, Norwegian fjords|contact=annually}} - if placed in the "Geography" section, JaneSmith will receive an automatic update every yearly about unanswered peer reviews in the geography area.

We can at this stage only use the broad peer review section titles to guide what reviews you'd like, but that's better than nothing! You can also set an interest in multiple separate subject areas that will be updated at different times.

Update #2: a (lean) WikiProject Peer review edit

I don't think we need a WikiProject with a giant bureaucracy nor all sorts of whiz-bang features. However over the last few years I've found there are times when it would have been useful to have a list of editors that would like to contribute to discussions about the peer review process (e.g. instructions, layout, automation, simplification etc.). Also, it can get kind of lonely on the talk page as I am (correct me if I'm wrong) the only regular contributor, with most editors moving on after 6 - 12 months.

So, I've decided to create "WikiProject Peer review". If you'd like to contribute to the WikiProject, or make yourself available for future newsletters or contact, please add yourself to the list of members.

Update #3: advertising edit

We plan to do some advertising of peer review, to let editors know about it and how to volunteer to help, at a couple of different venues (Signpost, Village pump, Teahouse etc.) - but have been waiting until we get this bot + WikiProject set up so we have a way to help interested editors make more enduring contributions. So consider yourself forewarned!

And... that's it!

I wish you all well on your Wikivoyages, Tom (LT) (talk) 00:31, 11 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Francis Nash scheduled for TFA edit

This is to let you know that the Francis Nash article has been scheduled as today's featured article for October 7, 2018. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 7, 2018, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1100 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. 2019 US Banknote Contest edit

  US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

Peer review John Neal article? edit

@Cdtew: Could I interest you in participating in a peer review of John Neal (writer)? I recently overhauled the whole thing, replacing the article I wrote in 2006 and that had slowly improved over the following 14 years through small efforts by myself and others over that time. I think the new article is a major improvement and hopefully worth getting the article's status upgraded, but before I request that upgrade, I put out a request for peer review.

I am asking you since you are listed a volunteer peer review editor interested in American early Republic and Antebellum era history to which this figure contributed.

The peer review request is linked at the top of talk:John Neal (writer).

Thanks in advance for the help!

Inactive peer review volunteer edit

Hi Cdtew, you're receiving this message because you were previously listed at the list of volunteers for Wikipedia's peer review process, but you haven't made any edits to the English Wikipedia in over 1 year.

Because of your inactivity, you have been removed from the volunteers list, so that the list is kept up to date and editors who do need help can better find active editors. If you become active again and would like to add yourself to the volunteers list again, you can do so at any time by visiting the volunteers list.
