The Military history WikiProject Newsletter Issue I - March 2006
Project news An independent military history peer review has been created for the benefit of the project. A number of articles have already been reviewed, receiving significantly more feedback within the project than they did on the generic peer review page. The project's Collaboration of the Fortnight got off to a great start with Ferdinand Foch and is now focusing on the military history of Spain. Two new task forces—dealing with warfare during classical antiquity and the Middle Ages—have been created. An effort to build a catalogue of high-quality maps for use in military history articles is now underway. The newly-formed translation department is looking for volunteers to help with translating featured articles from other-language Wikipedias.	From the Coordinators Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Military history WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in. Please consider this inital issue to be a prototype; as always, any comments and suggestions are quite welcome, and will help us improve the newsletter in the coming months. History of Earth

I wanted to thank you for your suggestions regarding references at History of Earth. I am working to reference the article as well as I can. However, I'm a physician and so only an amateur in the various fields the article covers. In particular, I am not up-to-date on the newest research in the different branches. Your user page suggests you have some expertise in this area; if you have any new references to offer or any that are superior to the ones I've selected, I'd be very appreciative. I'm no expert, just a student. :) I'm not especially familiar with the newest research either, although I don't believe any of the theories History of Earth presents have been substantially revised in the last couple years. It's 15 years old now, but I would recommend looking at The Emergence of Animals (ISBN 0231066473) by the McMenamins. The book is cited frequently and provides a good overview of the rise of animals, a development which doesn't get very prominent placement in the article as is. (Although the way you have it structured, around multicellularity and the colonization of land, might flow better and make more sense.) You've done a fantastic job, by the way. Agroecology

hey i just wondered about your definition bullets on the agroecology page. they seem to be a little bit limiting: i.e. when you say "Agroecosystems are maintained at an early successional state" that is patently not true. i've worked with agroforestry systems (especially in the tropics) that are specifically designed to remain diverse in horizontal and vertical space. thus, in their first years they are planted at a simple successional stage, but within five to ten years trees and multi-level crops grow together to create a healthy diverse ecosystem while keeping high overall yields. another misleading statement is that "Agroecosystems generally exhibit monoculture" - a certain type of agroecosystem would be a monoculture. however, polycultures and other types exist countering that model. overall, "agroecosystem" is a general term for managed, productive systems, while the term you seem to be discussing is perhaps "industrial agriculture." —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 128.32.77.115 (talk • contribs) 06:58, 12 April 2006.

Thanks for your comments. You seem to be an authority on the subject, so please feel free to make changes to the article. You're right that farming methods vary, so the six bullet points I added should not be considered the ultimate description of every agroecosystem. However, I do think it is accurate to say that most agroecosystems around the world conform to those characteristics, so generalities aren't completely inapropriate. bcasterline t 07:39, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

John Crosby - Added categories

Thanks for putting those in. I'd only just put the article online this afternoon and thought about the categories a bit later.

However, I wonder whether he really belongs in the "opera directors" category. Yes, he did direct the COMPANY, but, to my knowledge, he did not stage direct any individual production, only conducted them.

So does he really fit into the same group as those avant garde regietheatre-type people such as Wilson, Ponelle, Bieito?????? None of the rest of the group actually ran opera houses, except maybe the Wagners.

Actually, take a look at the people on the Opera managers list, which includes the likes of Rudolph Bing: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Opera#Opera_managers

I'm moving Crosby over to that group, as it really makes more sense.

Matthew Fort

I didn't make his category a British food writer because I hadn't found a reference saying he was British. He may have been born in another country (like Prue Leith who seems very British but was born in South Africa.) Please could you find a source to say he's British, and then I can also add that information to his article not just the category. If not the category should remain as 'Food writer' only. Ta. I wasn't able to find a source online that said where he was born. This page, however, suggests that his schooling was largely in England, so I think it's safe to assume he was born there. Even if he weren't, he's probably a naturalized or registered British citizen; and considering almost all of his work has been there, I think it's appropriate to call him British. Oddly enough, I had a similar experience with a photograph I took of Carhenge. I was directed to a website which had, I first thought, ripped off a photograph of mine. It turned out that we'd just taken a photograph from the same vantage point. Particularly strange was that even our skies looked similar (then again, it was Nebraska ...). Anyway, I'm very envious of your trip out there. It is a great coastline - very attractive, full of rockpool creatures and almost completely empty of people (at least when I was there). Cole page

Hi B. I saw your comment to Isarig and am not sure you realize that on May 9, he had an unfortunate edit war with Lee Hunter. During this episode, they both broke the 3rv rule. CSTAR, who was also an active participant on the page, blocked Isarig . He did not block Lee, even after Isarig pointed out that the rule has *not* been applied unevenhandedly. Of course you have a point about civility and I feel very strongly about that, but in this context I feel you are kind of rubbing salt into a wound since he has made a valid point to CSTAR and has been ignored. Thanks for stopping by. I know about the edit war; I saw what happened. I don't think that excuses Isarig's comments, which have been hostile and uncivil since before the 3RR block. But, as I mentioned in my comment, I wasn't censuring him, only trying to give advice. If the hostility could be toned down a notch or two (some of which may be inadvertent, such as perceived sarcasm), work could start on improving the article and unprotecting it. bcasterline t 12:57, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

I agree, but want to note that the treatment of this particular user was not evenhanded. It takes more than one individual to make an edit war and there was hostility, snarkiness, failure to listen, etc on the part of a few individuals. (This has all be said at Talk:Juan Cole, but it bears repitition.) In retrospect, you're right. LeeHunter should also have been blocked, but, since his violation of 3RR was less conspicuous, it was overlooked. By the time anyone mentioned this fact, it was too late to block him for it -- and since 3RR blocks are meant more as a "cool down" period than a punishment, it wouldn't have been much help anyway. The statement says: "At least one of the editors involved on the page, Isarig, seems to have no regard for policy, having violated the WP:3RR and WP:NPA in the last few days." It names Isarig as the most egregious violator, but does not say he is the only one. It's strong; but he is the most egregious violator, so I think the statement is accurate. But, as Isarig just said, now is a good time to move on from this and begin work on the article. bcasterline t 14:00, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

But I do applaud your advocacy for evenhandedness; and if you think a serious injustice and abuse of admin privileges has taken place, then I encourage you, as CSTAR suggested, to open an RfC. Thanks, I appreciate that. I'm glad someone is around to notice the anomalies and to question whether featured pictures are really satisfactory as opposed to just popular. I'm pretty confident both were true in this case, but, since polls are evil, votes should generally never be taken at face value. I'd never gone through that promotion procedure before, by the way. FP renaming

Basically not enough people registered their support for me to really push the issue. It just kind of died in the water. Also, I sort of lost interest in pursuing it when I found the WP:FSC page and thought that each media type would get its own promotion page. I didn't think that was optimal, but it wasn't important enough to challenge. That project never really got off the ground though... Another problem I see with renaming is the overhead. Should we really go around renaming pages just so some confused people don't think we should feature diagrams/maps? No. The only reason I see for the renaming is to broaden FPC to other media types (sounds and movies) which is another matter entirely. I'd love to see featured sounds and movies though, if you want to take up the fight. If you do do it, we have to think about how we can adjust WP:WIAFP to meet the broader criterion of inclusion. Taking up the issue at the Village Pump sounds like the best way to proceed if you're interested. BrokenSegue 23:59, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick response. I think focusing the criteria on "encyclopedic value" and "Wikipedia's best work" would allow fairly painless expansion into other media types. Most of the criteria revolve around either those two points or technical details (resolution, license, etc.). I see what you mean about the amount of renaming/moving work involved -- there would be a significant amount of it. But, considering the debate over diagrams/maps is recurrent, and considering other media types (with WP:FSC apparently defunct) are neglected entirely, I think it would be worthwhile. Anyway, I'd like to pursue this issue, so, as you suggest, I think I will bring it up on the VIllage Pump when I have some time the beginning of next week. -- bcasterline • talk 00:53, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Enquiry

Hi,

I have an enquiry regarding the Featured Picture Policy and thought that you will be the right person to ask. What I wanted to know is that according to FP policies, is there any that policy that disallows an autostereogram being a featured (you can find many examples of autostereograms in the article linked). I found many brilliant autostereograms in the article but thought that there might be inhibitions among those who vote against such images. Myself going through the FP policy, the only thing that can be a problem is the fifth criteria that says it should add value to article in way no other images does. But this is also subjective. Hey. As it is currently set up, any image type of any subject can be nominated as a FPC -- policy doesn't explicitly exclude anything. Personally, I think a good autostereogram, one which shows what autostereograms are all about, would satisfy the criteria. But, as you say, and as the India map promotion revealed, many voters do have problems promoting images that are not pictures. I think an autostereogram would have trouble. You won't know until you try, though, so if you have a good autostereogram in mind, I would encourage you to nominate it. -- bcasterline • talk 22:45, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

I saw that you took out some of the information I had added about criticisms of Digg. I am curious as to how that information constituted original resource or uncited sources, as mentioned in your edit summary.

Thanks for asking instead of knee-jerk reverting. I removed a section of the bullet point you added because it looks like original research. The first part you added is exactly what belongs in the Criticism section because it originates from the source you cited; the second seemed to originate from your own observations, which are not really appropriate for a Wikipedia article even if the underlying facts are sourced. Something can have a source and still be original research.

Yeah, they weren't as commercial as most spam links are. But, since they focused on travel and tourism information, and were usually written in pretty poor English, I didn't think they were appropriate for encyclopedia articles -- spam or otherwise. List of time periods

On 14 July, 2006 you changed the article List of time periods to say that the three-age system for prehistory is the Stone Age, the Copper Age, and the Bronze Age. I think it's supposed to be the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age. Stone is harder than Copper, so people kept making many weapons and tools out of Stone even after they learned how to use Copper. I think the Copper Age either: 1. wasn't significant enough to be included in the three-age system, 2. wasn't discovered until after the three-age system was originally created, or 3. is considered to be a late part of the Stone Age or an early part of the Bronze age. Maybe some combination of those three. I propose that the article be changed accordingly, but I'll give you a chance to comment first. - Shaheenjim 03:29, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Looks like I was moving material around within the same article rather than adding anything new (albeit in a sloppy two-part edit -- here to here). I do recall thinking that perhaps the copper age didn't really belong since it's not one of the three listed on the article three-age system, but in the end I decided to let someone more knowledgeable sort it out. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.
