Hello -- thanks for your message! I'm in the midst of searching for specific evidence that VirtuMall was indeed a very active online shopping website that while getting significant notoriety in 1995, was nonetheless very visible and active in 1994. I can tell you this based on first-hand, personal experience. Indeed the Hickory Farms site was launched in 1994 as well as a number of others. It was the first to use some now common shopping cart technologies and payment technologies. While I don't doubt that the Google searches are not turning up anything earlier than January 1, I would argue that's because much of the web was not indexed prior to that date. I'm looking for Usenet articles that can substantiate those claims. In the meantime, I give you my word about the company's formation and its value and presence prior to 1995. But the page you are editor of will be lacking if it neglects to mention sites that were formative in the creation of the Internet and Web as we know it.
