ConfirmAccount extension

Hey :). You're being contacted because you are involved in the ACC process, or participated in the original discussion in '08 about the ConfirmAccount extension. This is a note to let you know that we are seeking opinions on switching this extension on, effectively making the ACC process via the Toolserver redundant. You can read all the details here; I would be very grateful if people would indicate how they feel about the idea :). Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 13:13, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Your HighBeam account is ready!

Good news! You now have access to 80 million articles in 6500 publications through HighBeam Research. Here's what you need to know:

  • Your account activation code has been emailed to your Wikipedia email address.

    • If you did not receive a code but were on the approved list, add your name to this section and we'll try again.
  • The 1-year, free period begins when you enter the code.
  • To activate your account: 1) Go to http://www.highbeam.com/prof1; 2) You’ll see the first page of a two-page registration. 3) Put in an email address and set up a password. (Use a different email address if you signed up for a free trial previously); 4) Click “Continue” to reach the second page of registration; 5) Input your basic information; 6) Input the activation code; 7) Click “Finish”. Note that the activation codes are one-time use only and are case-sensitive.

  • A quick reminder about using the account: 1) try it out; 2) provide original citation information, in addition to linking to a HighBeam article; 3) avoid bare links to non-free HighBeam pages; 4) note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate
  • HighBeam would love to hear feedback at WP:HighBeam/Experiences
  • Show off your HighBeam access by placing {{User:Ocaasi/highbeam_userbox}} on your userpage
  • When the 1-year period is up, check applications page to see if renewal is possible. We hope it will be.

A little talk

Hi again, Ansumang! I saw your comments at my editor review (too late to see!). Yes, I think I will be involved in these for a change after too many biology articles, but I shall remain a bit less active for I am busy now-a-days. And for the Odia Wikipedia, I have problem with the input in the Odia language, so I can't contribute just now (I am trying to contribute, still). However, let me tell you, my rule of thumb to develop the Wikipedia is to translate first the important articles from English ones to Odia (like parts of Odisha, the Odia cuisine, culture, places which are mostly temples of course, and its history - because I think the people would mainly search for this in the Odia Wikipedia, expecting it to have more information on the state; later you can focus on other topics like plants, animals etc.). I hope you understand my point. Keep in touch and never hesitate in ever contacting me, I would reply the moment I see your message :).--Sainsf <^> (talk) 13:39, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi no problem, finish up your work (work first). Even I am really swamped, should be poring somewhere else but nothing is materialising. Contributing on Wikipedia is a never-ending process, pitch in when you free. I totally understand your point regarding topics on Odia Wikipedia. And coming to your problem, Can you tell me what exactly the problem is ? Is it your OS ? -- ɑηsuмaη ʈ ᶏ ɭ Ϟ 14:13, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Article title!

I have started two new articles:

But, I am not sure of the article titles, we can not name Jnana Yoga & Karma Yoga, since there are articles on these (rel. Gita), and also we can not name Karma Yoga (book), since (I don't know any) but there might be other writers on this subject! So, what do you think about article titles? --Tito Dutta Message 16:38, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Hey I am not that experienced on Wikipedia. I think "Karma Yoga by Vivekananda" or "Karma Yoga:The Yoga of action" (if 'The Yoga of action' is part of the book name) would be better. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (books). And ask someone like User:Redtigerxyz. I can't think of anything better :( -- ɑηsuмaη ʈ ᶏ ɭ Ϟ 17:40, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
There will be a problem on naming Karma Yoga Yoga of action, because in the main book there was no sub-title, and different publishers use different subtitles (eg. for Jnana Yoga you will see "The book of knowledge" "The book of intellect" etc). I have moved both articles to "ABC Yoga by Swami Vivekananda". And I book cover files I have used are not of first editions, those are recent (eg. 1993 etc). --Tito Dutta Message 18:25, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj article name change revert discussion

Hi, If you get a chance can you give your opinion about a reverting a name change in the following article Talk:Kripalu_Maharaj#Revert_name_change. The article was originally called "Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj" but 2 days ago a user changed it to "Kripalu Maharaj". Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj is the name by which the subject of the article is overwhelmingly known as, and I have given many reasons and proof of that, and reasons why the name should be reverted back to Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj. "Kripalu Maharaj" sounds completely wrong to anyone who knows the subject, and anyway there are other people with similar names. Anyway, since you previously were involved in the article, and involved in the DYK nominations, maybe you can leave a comment on the talk page for the article.

Proposed deletion of Oriya Wikipedia

The article Oriya Wikipedia has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable website, per WP:NOTABLE, composed of first-hand sources.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. —Justin (koavf)TCM 22:55, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

New Pages update

Hey Ansumang/Archive 3 :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! regarding "wrong edits regarding WP India tags"

I removed WP-India tags for "redirection" pages ["NH27" was redirected to "National_Highway_27" - rated article; "Indian Pickles" - redirected to "South Asian pickle"-rated article etc.,]. and non relevant pages like [Lapparentosaurus(Dinosaur in Madagascar), Samudra gupta(Bangladeshi poet), Jackal or Tiger(a Story, not related to places in India or anything related to India), Natalvar (related to WP-Ayyavazhi)] Only these type of articles i have removed WP-India tags. I hope this is correct. After studying the article only, i decide for class/importance etc., Anyhow, i won't remove tags further for any article.Rajaram Sarangapani (talk) 08:55, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

New Page Triage/New Pages Feed

Hey all :). A notification that the prototype for the New Pages Feed is now live on enwiki! We had to briefly take it down after an unfortunate bug started showing up, but it's now live and we will continue developing it on-site.

The page can be found at Special:NewPagesFeed. Please, please, please test it and tell us what you think! Note that as a prototype it will inevitably have bugs - if you find one not already mentioned at the talkpage, bring it up and I'm happy to carry it through to the devs. The same is true of any additions you can think of to the software, or any questions you might have - let me know and I'll respond.

Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 13:32, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

See also section links

Hi. I have a question about what you wrote earlier; I hope I am not bothering you. So, In this edit, you said "avoid redirect in see also section". Since I am rather new here, I was a bit curious; why should we avoid redirects in see also sections?

Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 11:48, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi, That is not necessary actually. Its just own perception to provide direct links where possible, anyway it takes to the target page. And some believes it takes less time to load a page especially when someone on a low speed internet connection or on a mobile. For more, see Principle of least astonishment and it is advised to avoid piped link where possible Manual of Style/Linking. You can always ask editors about their editing :-) -- ɑηsuмaη ʈ ᶏ ɭ Ϟ 12:55, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
Hi.
Thanks for the reply. It was kind of you; although I must say I am a little bit confused and find your reply a little contradictory. For one thing, if one should avoid piping, then one should use redirects which is the opposite of what you did. For another, I also use a slow Internet connections and have never noticed the slightest difference between opening a redirect and opening a direct link. As for Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking, it contradicts you outright and sends me to another policy that reads: Do not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken.
Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 07:58, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
Sorry my answer was not direct/clear. All I can say now is It actually depends on the availability of an article and the text you want to be shown. "So avoid redirects and piped links where possible otherwise its fine". There is no strict rule. Its just that the less characters, templates, redirects an article has, the less time it takes to load, you must have noticed page takes more time to open if it is long. So use common sense, save ink :). Still if you have any confusion we can discuss further. Regards -- ɑηsuмaη ʈ ᶏ ɭ Ϟ 12:46, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

You may go through pages which you like and watch them by clicking on the star button beside "view history" option. When you create articles, you can monitor and see the latest changes and when you left message on someone's talk page; you can check whether s/he has responded yet here. Visit these pages Wikipedia:Introduction, Wikipedia:Cheatsheet and WP:Editing policy to know more about editing. You can participate in WikiProject India/Collaborations of the month where editors edit together to improve an article every month. If you see there is no article about a place or person, you can create one, but check whether it is notable. If it is not notable enough than it will be deleted. -- ɑηsuмaη ʈ ᶏ ɭ Ϟ 16:43, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

  • One more thing, provide all the necessary (missing) parameters to citation templates. E.g. |format, |date etc. -- ɑηsuмaη ʈ ᶏ ɭ Ϟ 22:49, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
I've already ask them to copy editing and right now its in process. Though i've well tried to provide all the necessary parameters to citation templates. As for now i'm only expecting for GA because for FA i need some more time. Some of them have told me article could get easily GA but difficult for FA. since FA articles demands Highly reliable sources. Titodutta and Dwaipayanc helping a lot by giving their valuable suggestions on peer review page.Hope You come soon.once again thanks --25 CENTS VICTORIOUS 04:37, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Page Triage newsletter

Hey all. Some quick but important updates on what we've been up to and what's coming up next :).

The curation toolbar, our Wikimedia-supported twinkle replacement. We're going to be deploying it, along with a pile of bugfixes, to wikipedia on 9 August. After a few days to check it doesn't make anything explode or die, we'll be sticking up a big notice and sending out an additional newsletter inviting people to test it out and give us feedback :). This will be followed by two office hours sessions - one on Tuesday the 14th of August at 19:00 UTC for all us Europeans, and one on Wednesday the 15th at 23:00 UTC for the East Coasters out there :). As always, these will be held in #wikimedia-office; drop me a note if you want to know how to easily get on IRC, or if you aren't able to attend but would like the logs.

I hope to see a lot of you there; it's going to be a big day for everyone involved, I think :). I'll have more notes after the deployment! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 20:10, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

A cheeseburger for you!

For your contributions on the article of Clothing in India, which was the collaboration of the month under WikiProject India for the month of July 2012. Your work is appreciated. Thanks  BPositive (talk) 12:31, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

How the page get updated? Can you add my name there? --Tito Dutta 00:20, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

New Pages newsletter

Hey all :)

A couple of new things.

First, you'll note that all the project titles have now changed to the Page Curation prefix, rather than having the New Pages Feed prefix. This is because the overarching project name has changed to Page Curation; the feed is still known as New Pages Feed, and the Curation Toolbar is still the Curation Toolbar. Hopefully this will be the last namechange ;p.

On the subject of the Curation Toolbar (nice segue, Oliver!) - it's now deployed on Wikipedia. Just open up any article in the New Pages Feed and it should appear on the right.

It's still a beta version - bugs are expected - and we've got a lot more work to do. But if you see something going wrong, or a feature missing, drop me a note or post on the project talkpage and I'll be happy to help :). Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 00:11, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Page Curation update

Hey all :). We've just deployed another set of features for Page Curation. They include flyouts from the icons in Special:NewPagesFeed, showing who reviewed an article and when, a listing of this in the "info" flyout, and a general re-jigging of the info flyout - we've also fixed the weird bug with page_titles_having_underscores_instead_of_spaces in messages sent to talkpages, and introduced CSD logging! As always, these features will need some work - but any feedback would be most welcome. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 18:15, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Page Curation newsletter

Hey Ansumang. This will be, if not our final newsletter, one of the final ones :). After months of churning away at this project, our final version (apart from a few tweaks and bugfixes) is now live. Changes between this and the last release include deletion tag logging, a centralised log, and fixes to things like edit summaries.

Hopefully you like what we've done with the place; suggestions for future work on it, complaints and bugs to the usual address :). We'll be holding a couple of office hours sessions, which I hope you'll all attend. Many thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:12, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.

Again, it's been an honour. Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 12:18, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

I am new to Wikipedia and i want to thank you for your welcome message...

Greetings Ansumang,

To begin with, i am at a loss to know what to say, or do; however, i do sense, and appreciate, some good spiritual qualities in you, and therefore, i will, as clearly and briefly as possible, explain my initial interest(s)and perspectives, and seek your opinion and advice on my initial editorial objectives---if you are willing to hear them. Indeed, please let me know if you are willing to help me proceed with, my current concern, which i hope you are willing to examine.

Sincerely, richard, aka Godswillplease; and, always in the Spirit of God's Will and Ways of Compassion, Goodness, Wisdom, and Truth---at least as much as possible given my current human imperfections and limitationsGodswillplease (talk) 08:13, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Hey thanks, I hope you enjoy your time on Wikipedia. Sure, I am here to help with editing. I would be happy to assist someone who believes in God, ...truth :-). Please do share your thoughts. -- ɑηsuмaη ʈ ᶏ ɭ Ϟ 08:31, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

This is not a newsletter

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 10:46, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Edits to templates

Please be careful when editing templates not to cause problems with poissible uses. For example, thios edit broke the "count" link for usernames containing spaces, including about a third of the ArbCom candidates listed at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2012/Candidates. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 21:10, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

And if you have any doubt on how to do your edit without disrupting anything, then you should:
  1. Immediately revert to the old, working version.
  2. Ask at an appropriate place, usually WP:VPT, on how to make what you want to work without break anything.

Notable members of caste/gotra X

I've just reverted a list of allegedly notable members of the Randhawa community. Please could you take a read of User:Sitush/Common#Castelists - it is not sufficient to assume that people who bear the Randhawa name are members of the eponymous community. Thanks. - Sitush (talk) 02:08, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Hey thank you!, will keep that in mind. And I ll refer your sub page further if needed. :-) -- ɑηsuмaη ʈ ᶏ ɭ Ϟ 02:35, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
