Udyavara Madhava Acharya

Udyavara Madhava Acharya (born 25 March 1941, Udupi Karnataka) is an orator, short story writer, poet, actor, choreographer in the medium of drama and Yakshagana, and an economics professor. He publishes his literary works using "UMA" as his pen name.

Being a postgraduate in Economics, Acharya began his career in Bhandarkar’s college Kundapura, continued his service in Poornaprajna College Udupi and retired as Principal at B B Hegde College of Business Management Kundapura.[citation needed]

Early life

Since his childhood in Uppoor, Udupi (Karnataka), Acharya was influenced by the rich cultural aspects of life in South Kanara through the ritualistic ceremonies like Dakkebali, Nagamandala, Bhuta Kola, Yakshagana.

The interest in Kannada literature made him explore the theatrical aspects in various literary works and give them a visual touch. Thus evolved his innovative theatrical technique ‘Samooha’ using the medium of Yakshagana, Classical Dance and Drama. Samooha is a stage craft where in a group of 4-8 male or female dancers do not portray a specific character through the course of the performance. Instead, they embody the expression of various feelings and inner thoughts of the characters by a visual manifestation. And also Samooha is the cultural ensemble led by Acharya along with other interested amateur artists.
