I just want to note that urban area and metropolitan area are different. Please read the respective article to see the differences.Chris! ct 06:03, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Right, so if there is a template for one, then there should be for the other. This one is titled largest "metros" which is a terrible title. But still refers to metro areas, so it should be a list of metro areas not urban areas.DaronDierkes (talk) 09:02, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cities/municipalities vs metros vs urban areas edit

Why is this template being placed on individual central city articles, and why do all of the links point to individual cities? Most metros/urban areas have their own articles, which seems like the more appropriate place for the template, given that they're the subject here.66.92.14.198 (talk) 17:44, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I second that question! DaronDierkes (talk) 02:16, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think you guys should bring this up to the talkpage of List of urban areas by population. The info of this template is taken from the article. Chris! ct 02:32, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Either you have no idea what I am talking about or I have no idea what you are talking about. This template is called "worldlargestmetros" which if you were to look up as metro you would be redirected to rapid transit. Thus this template appears to be talking about trains. Under that assumption, i have made these remarks. If you do not mean metro in the train sense, and instead mean metropolis or metropolitan area then you should change the title of the template to make it specify that. if you do mean metropolitian area, then you cannot then list cities according to List of urban areas by population or World's largest urban agglomerations you would have to use List of metropolitan areas by population. If that is what we are talking about, then I would say linking to the individual city and not the area article is best as different cities call the region around them different names that mean different things and are subject to different criteria. As far as I know, there are no articles for specific urban areas just things like, "Greater St. Louis" or "Seoul National Capital Area" which are radically different in concept. So link to the base city, that's fine. DaronDierkes (talk) 03:41, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
When i wrote that I seconded that remark, I was thinking in terms of linking to Beijing Subway etc. DaronDierkes (talk) 03:42, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
This template is clearly meant to point to major metropolitan areas. Because of this, it should follow the example of List of metropolitan areas by population and point to metropolitan area articles (such as Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto), not city articles. In any case, I think it's little more than needless clutter on articles which probably already mention their size in their lead. -- Exitmoose (talk) 04:50, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
If the template is a extension of that page, then the link should be to whatever is on that page. I looked at the source on List of metropolitan areas by population page, and almost all of them are linked to such a macro article. I agree with the moose. That's two votes for a major change to this template. Any nays? I'm removing the links. When we settle what this page is talking about, we will place the template in the related articles. Cool? good. DaronDierkes (talk) 08:35, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
more than fifty templates to remove, what a task. DaronDierkes (talk) 09:20, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
deleted all of them up to and including East Rand, but then had to leave my computer due to interference of the girlfriend variety. Will wipe the rest soon. DaronDierkes (talk) 10:02, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
All templates removed from pages except the one just posted on Metro Manila. Let's talk about where the templates belong. DaronDierkes (talk) 02:45, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Made a drastic change to the template, please forgive my hastiness. haven't put the template in any articles yet. DaronDierkes (talk) 03:48, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Population edit

Why are they ranked by population? What does population have to do with subway and metro rail networks? Rail is just one type of growth and does correlate directly with population. Ho Chi Min City is listed here, and they do not have a metro system! I was there last April, the only transit related construction I saw was done by barefoot men with jackhammers tearing up sidewalks to expand the streets for more mopeds. Try stats that have something to do with the subject in question like, Metro systems by annual passenger rides or Metro systems by number of stations. Those are far more telling. Right now you have Jakarta and LA ranked in front of Moscow, London, and Paris which says that you have clearly never been to the cities in question. Explain to my how the Cairo subway is more developed than the Moscow subway. DaronDierkes (talk) 02:16, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm not attacking, I just want to steer this in a healthy direction. DaronDierkes (talk) 02:18, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I believe you misunderstood the title. When it says "metro" it means "metro area" or "metropolitan area". This has nothing to do with subway. Admiral Norton (talk) 17:54, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Right. So I'm fully in favor of a better title. DaronDierkes (talk) 02:23, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

{{pp-template}} probably shouldn't be transcluded edit

{{editprotected}} Looks like the recently added {{pp-template|small=yes}} should be moved to the <noinclude> part of the template; otherwise it's marking all articles transcluding the "World's most populated ..." template (e.g., Cairo) as indefinitely protected. Move needed edit

Please move the link from Metro Manila to Greater Manila Area as its more relevant. Metro Manila is the semi-official name of a province that does not bound the conurbation. Doseiai2 (talk) 15:05, 26 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

CMA or MSA for American Cities? edit

Los Angeles is ranked by its MSA but leads you to the Greater Los Angeles Area which is the CMA (combined metro. area) instead of the MSA (metro. area) which is Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, this needs to be corrected. Some one needs to change it so it can take you to the real Los Angeles Metropolitan Area rather than the CMA (Greater Los Angeles). House1090 (talk) 01:35, 13 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Improvements prompted by Hong Kong FAC edit

While reviewing Hong Kong as a featured article candidate I ran across two problems with this template:

I have prepared this sandbox patch to fix the above problems. Eubulides (talk) 20:47, 12 February 2010 (UTC) (updated 20:56, 12 February 2010 (UTC)) 09:39, 14 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

All of the changes look good to me. Dabomb87 (talk) 00:42, 13 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I notice the endash spacing was removed from Hong Kong–Shenzen because "this area is under dispute in the MoS". That tag in WP:MOS is rather stale; there was discussion regarding spaced en dashes at WT:MOS, but it didn't go anywhere, which means we return to the status quo. Dabomb87 (talk) 15:09, 14 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I fixed the stale tag. It's still an active area of disagreement. Eubulides (talk) 20:15, 14 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'd wonder what is the basis to define a metropolitan area. Even if there is an official definition by the government, it is still different across different countries. Hong Kong and Shenzhen are even on different sides of a guarded and wired border. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.99.154.198 (talk) 13:53, 5 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Is this list referenced? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 61.18.170.73 (talk) 15:35, 6 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

How can HK and Shenzhen form a metropolitan area? Both poeple can not across the border without a visa/ document. Plus HK is not a CITY. From the report of Demographia[1] it is noted: "However, Detroit-Windsor and San Diego-Tijuana are not considered single urban areas because there is not freedom of labor movement between the two nations. Moreover, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, adjacent urban areas in China, are considered to separate urban areas, principally because unfettered labor movement between is not permitted." 77.134.74.157 (talk) 06:55, 23 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

New York naming edit

Can we get rid of or simplify the piping on New York? It's extraneous, as pretty much all the others are named after the one central city and don't need that much description. It looks unbalanced. oknazevad (talk) 01:08, 9 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

London edit

London should be higher in the listing, because if you look at the London page you will find that the metropolitan population is about 15 million, which makes it bigger than Kolkata for example. Also the hole ranking should be upgraded. --Ransewiki (talk) 07:34, 23 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
